Correct. Improvised from cut up beach obstacles.

HOWEVER, McCullan didn't come up with the idea. That was a "A Tenessee hillbilly named Roberts". Even his rank isn't recorded.

McCullan tried to give credit to the press, but Roberts wasn't the all American hero mould so got nothing for it.

Over to you for the next question.
Thanks.
Was the Rhino the same as the fabled "McCullan Cutter", or were they different varieties of the same idea?

Okay: question:

The USS Tang has the dubious honour of being the only American naval craft in WWII to do what?

i think u mean the one that was sank by its own torpedo in the formosa strait.

Yes, Rhino "official" designation. Apparently US Army a bit embarrassed about cutting up scrap metal for use as a weapon.

Beats me why, nobody else (not Germans, Brits, Canadians or Poles) had same initiative to defeat the hedges.

The Germans, probably because they had no need to as all they had to do was defend.

The Brits? Probably the tight rank structure, and the way that they didn't encourage initiative as much as the Americans.

Not true. About 5 major counter offensives, first on 06/06 itself, got 21st Panzer to the beaches between Juno and Sword. No way to get to actual beacheads themselves so they withdrew

Probably more down to fact whole idea was for US (bigger potential buildup) to breakthrough on weakest flank (ie furthest from Germany and hardest for them to reinforce).

Actually, definitely. Route for breakout was chosen 13/06 - by Monty (overall Ground Commander).

Point taken, I was thinking more about the time when a beachead was established, and the Germans concentrated in defence in depth, with teir trench networks.

Good to see you back, BTW.

Wouldnt they be extremely vunlreable to Battleship large and powerful guns?

Well, yes. More so to conventional AT guns, arty and air.

Nature of the terrain made it very difficult to target indirect fire though.

Not having any Allied Forward Air controllers with the troops for the first few weeks didn't exactly help either.

Didn't stop the Germans trying though... though usually Ultra intercepts made Allies jobs a lot easier. As well as the hedgerows.

Nonconformist, please ask a question or we'll be here all week. Thanks for the welcome back. Been real busy with a new job. Back now though.

i sincerly apologise for my lack of question answering. I have been focusing a touch more on baseball, i have limited time on a computer. I apologise.

heres a question

the 2nd Polish Corps fighting the battle of Monte Cassino had a very unusual method of transpotation...what was it?

Bicycle? Seem to recall a few Brit equipped outfits were supposed to use them.

Apparently some German recon units as well. I guess I'm wrong.

nope. a bicycle is a good guess, but it was alot more weird or, unusual than that

nope...but you are warmer
