Hello, have lurked about this forum for a bit and found it incredibly useful. Thank you everyone. :goodjob:

I'm not a very good player of Civ4BtS; I normally hover around Warlord level, I try Noble now and again, but usually get battered. So, I've devised this bizarre way of trying to improve my game: start with the oldest civ, try out a few different maps and basic strategies then move on to the next oldest - so Gilgamesh, Hammurabi and so on.

What I'm getting at is this: What's the best way to play as Gilgamesh?

With starting techs of Wheel and Agriculture, a inland, wheat start suits best. I'd try and get a 'food' tech otherwise and then I'd usually then tech for Archery (Protective,) Mining then Masonry (Walls) then Bronze Working. By this time Polytheism has been founded elsewhere (Ziggurats) - should I then try and tech straight for Alphabet in order to try and trade for it?

I know everything is map-dependent, but could someone give a clueless player a clue on how to best play as Gilgamesh?

Cheers lads and lasses.

Vultures are extremely powerful. I recommend reading Sisutil's guide to the Early Rush:

Giggles is even better for the early rush because he can save his economy with those lovely Ziggarauts. So I'd probably follow a tech path like: Mining > Bronze Working > Mysticism > Meditation (or Polytheism) > Priesthood > whatever

General strategy: Build Vultures, kill, whip Zigs, build more Vultures, kill more, whip more Zigs, etcetera....

Gilgamesh is a bit unique IMO in that he's so flexible. Any number of early strategies work with him because of his traits, UU and UB. Rush? Vultures are fantastic rushers.

Block land? Creative allows you to box in other AIs, and protective archers won't be dislodged.

Rex like crazy? Ziggurats provide early cheap courthouses to offset the cost. The key with this strategy is getting some sort of early economy (GLH or cottages), because he doesn't have any direct economic strengths.

I find Gilgamesh to be suitable to adapt to the early surroundings as well as any other civs. I tend to like to aggressively land grab with him, pay for it with cottages and early courthouses, and then knock some heads in the mid game with my superior land.

On noble, you probably don't need to tech archery manually. I would typically go mining/bw, then go for whatever worker techs allow you to improve your land. Then tech alphabet to backfill archery and whatever religious techs you need to get closer to priesthood. If there's anyone nearby (especially a non-protective civ) and you have copper nearby, claim the copper, and kill thy neighbor.

If you post an early screenshot, you can probably get much more pointed advice - like I said, Gilgy is very flexible in being able to adapt to the map IMO.

The best suggestion for Gilgamesh is to play the map. Some things to looks for

1) HE is creative, so you cna delay priesthood and the UB until you need it.

2) Vultures are deadly for early rushes. If you have copper, Iron Working can be greatly delayed.

3) Agriculture/wheel means he can tech pottery very fast for an early CE game if you have alot of useful rivers and espeically floodplains.

4) Since he is creative, he can build FAST libraries for an early SE game. Something to consider if the land does not favor cottages much.

5) Consider espionage if there are alot of peaceful techers in the neighborhood. Get the Great wall and beeline priesthood for the Zigs and that spy specialist option.

The problem with Gilgamesh is that you probably want to "DO IT ALL" right away. Pick and choose how to play based on the map and neighbors.

Expand more than normal (peacefully or otherwise) and use your cheap courthouses @ priesthood to pay for it. Cheap libraries will get you a head start on GPP, and CRE speeds up expansion in general.

Vultures are a better axe rush. Other than that, just play him normally.

I look forward to your deity win as George Washington - that is something I'd like to see. Or does it have to be FDR because he's later?

going religious is the superior

then bronze then writing

they are not a good sea civ, and as such are not as "flexible" as some may believe.
The vulture the AI knows how to handle, unlike, say the Keshik.

the Great Wall suggestion i agree with. Then a massive population explosion and go to war.

100% agree.

REX or RUSH to open and pay for expansion with early courthouses. Strong archers to defend your empire and you can even use the chop-walls-for- :gold: trick to pay for expansion as well.

I would say the least desirable opening for Gilga is a coastal opening where you really want to go fishing-workboats, which slows horizontal expansion.

Many thanks for your help. Appreciate it.

Guilty as charged, your honour.

I'm a bit rubbish at axe rushes, I always get the feeling that I should be building up the empire at that point - too many choices!

I look forward to your deity win as George Washington - that is something I'd like to see. Or does it have to be FDR because he's later?

FDR is the last one, I think! I'm probably going to get stuck round about the Napoleon era, I reckon. ;)

Really, really does my head in.

Check out Deity cookbook I: Gilgamesh from Sumeria. You'll probably pick up some stuff.

Nice one mate, cheers.
