A Brave New World Part 2

Global News Report

WAR IN NORTH AMERICA. The French North American Empire is in turmoil as fighting breaks out across the entire continent. War has erupted between the French and their former New Englander allies. The various conflicts on the continent, while not technically united as a single war, all do fall under the same sort of category. The various American nations fighting the French have proclaimed this to be a “Second American Revolution,” this time fighting to hold their freedom against the French Empire. That is why the events relating the prosecution of the war are detailed under a special section below.

NEW MEDICAL ADVANCES. Amsterdam, Empire of the Netherlands. Russian and Dutch researches this year came up with new theories on medicine and treatment. They have extended the long disused smallpox vaccine to other diseases and viruses. New treatments have been developed for the influenza, which plagued the world only a few years ago, and has been met with much praise from the global scientific community.

EMPIRE OF MEXICO ELECTIONS. Mexico City, Empire of Mexico. The leading Nationalist Party won this year’s elections, continuing a comfortable lead in all polls and the various districts. The effects of the northern development project were not apparent in this year’s elections, though the 1908 elections will definitely feel the impact. (+1 Stability)

IROQUOIS ELECTIONS. Mohawk, Iroquois. The Iroquois Liberal Party, facing invasion from French and Quebecois military forces, won a major victory in this year’s elections. The people of the nation have rallied behind the government, hoping that despite the invasion, the Native American alliance will be able to rally against the French threat. See below for full details on that conflict. (+3 Stability)

PENNSYLVANIA ELECTIONS. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In a surprise twist of fate, the Pennsylvanian Socialist Party won this year’s elections, on a unique campaign. They have pledged not only to redistribute land and improve conditions for workers, but have vowed to restore the land “stolen by France” in New Jersey. The new government fully supports New England’s war and has launched the invasion. See below for full details on that conflict. (+1 Stability)

MILITARY OUSTS SOCIALISTS IN QUEBEC. Quebec City, Quebec. The Quebecois military has taken control of the government, ending former socialist control. This new government has pledged to achieve full victory over the Canadians, Iroquois, and New Englanders. They have rallied massive support from the people, who look forward to an extension of Quebecois glory and empire. See below for full details on that conflict (+5 Stability)

MEXICAN MODERNIZATION PROGRAM PROVES SUCCESSFUL. Mexico City, Empire of Mexico. This year, the final stages of the Mexican Northern Development Program have been completed. New roads, factories, and even towns have been created and flourished under the new program. New resources have been exploited and developed, creating new goods for sale on the international market. (+2 EP for Mexico)

VIRGINIAN SLAVE REFORM CONTINUES. Richmond, Virginian Empire. Emancipation of the slaves in the Virginian Empire continued this year with great success. Minimal resistance has been felt against this move as the slaves are freed in both Kentucky and Appalachia. Now, with these regions complete, the heartlands of slave labor are all that remain for emancipation.

MORMONS COMPLETE NEW TEMPLE. Bringhamville, Deseret. A long foreseen plan by the Mormon theocracy was completed this year with the construction of the Great Temple Complex. This series of buildings serves not only as a place of worship but as a great center for administration for the government. It attracts Mormons from all over the country to view it.

MILITARY COUP ATTEMPTED IN COLOMBIA. Bogotá, Colombia. A rival general to Colombia’s leader, General Cesar Juarez, attempted to gain power for himself this year, sparking increased turmoil in this South American nation. While the government has managed to retain control, it was at a heft cost. Several tens of thousands of lives were scarred or lost in the conflict for control, but the success of the government has eliminated a large number of those opposed to the Juarez regime, returning some stability to the country. (-11 Infantry Brigades, +4 Stability for Colombia)

SOCIALISTS OUSTED IN ECUADOR. Quito, Ecuador. The elected Socialist Party of Ecuador has been removed this year in a violent military coup. The army of General Jose Martinez has seized control from the socialists, establishing a military dictatorship. This of course has been met by considerable internal opposition and riots throughout the various cities of Ecuador. Many socialists have turned to the much more radical Communist Party, which hopes for violent revolution like that which has taken place in Brazil or Rio Grande du Sol. (-2 Stability for Ecuador)

SOCIALISTS SEIZE POWER IN RIO GRANDE. Sol, Rio Grande du Sol. As sort of a reaction to the success of socialist and communist efforts in Brazil, the government of Rio Grande du Sol collapsed under severe internal pressure this year. After losing effective control of the capital to communist agitators, the government’s leadership agreed to step down in favor of the formation of a Socialist Worker’s Union in charge of the government. All businesses and industries within Rio Grande du Sol have been nationalized and placed under the control of the new government. Order has been established throughout the country and the people look forward to a bright red dawn. (+6 Stability)

SOCIALISTS TAKE POWER IN BRAZIL. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. With the failure of the Campos Sale program, the Brazilian socialist militias and unions have seized control of the nation. Localized governments and leaders were replaced by socialist workers’ groups and unionists. The majority of the military has rallied once more behind the socialists, though the bulk of the officer corps has fled to Germany. Another surprising bit of support came from some of the German garrisons throughout the nation, who have “mingled” with the local populace while stationed here and some chose to support the new regime, providing a fresh officer corps to the fledgling regime. The new government has had its plate full as a large number of German and Italian soldiers remained present and loyal to their leaders throughout the nation. The Italians, despite a declaration of war, still have evacuated their troops from Brazil, and have returned to Italy. Some of the German forces were defeated in the initial confusion of the conflict, though most have rallied with scattered troops in the Amazon Economic Zone. A limited German blockade has been installed along the Brazilian coast, and it grows stronger with each passing month. The Brazilian navy, rather than facing the Germans, has instead chosen to defect to the still stable republic of Pernambuco, where a multitude of admirals originally lived.

German Empire: 6 Infantry Brigades

DEVASTATION IN BOLIVIA. Santa Cruz, Bolivia. In the wake of socialist successes in South America, the Bolivian government came up with a plan to destroy socialist support in their nation. While suppressing socialist movements in Sucre and other cities, they allowed them to demonstrate openly in the city of Santa Cruz. After several weeks of demonstrations, the Bolivian army, having moved in secrecy, opened up extensive artillery fire on the city. After a week of being trapped in the city under artillery fire, the socialists dispersed and the city, one of the trade hubs of Bolivia, was devastated. (-1 EP for Bolivia, +1 Stability)

DANISH EMPIRE ELECTIONS. Copenhagen, Danish Empire. After the various diplomatic feuds with the Zulu Empire, the Danish people have overwhelmingly elected the Dansk National Arbejderparti into political control over the empire. This reactionary party has promised to expand the Danish Empire and to take a less appeasing approach to the Zulu, vowing to “restore Danish honor for the white race.” They have also promised greater control of the government to rest in the hands of the popular King Christian IX, who has been invited into several Parliamentary sessions. (+1 Stability)

PORTUGAL ELECTIONS. Lisbon, Portugal. The Portuguese Moderate Party managed to achieve victory over the Liberals this year, promising to keep up the agricultural reform as well as appealing to conservatives by improving the nation’s military. The moderates have been successful in spreading their message to the people, who remain optimistic about the new regime. (+1 Stability)

RIOTS IN ENGLAND. London, England. A group of people who call themselves the Parliamentarists waged a demonstration in front of the former house of Parliament, now closed. These people have demanded a reopening of Parliament and the return of English constitutional monarchy. Military forces unfortunately opened fire upon the crowd, sparking riots and chaos which lasted for nearly two days until reinforcements were called in to break apart local barricades. For now, order has been restored but the demands of the Parrliamentarists remain.

SERBIA JOINS RUSSIAN EMPIRE. Pristina, Serbia. To rousing popular support, the Serbian nation joined the Russian Imperial Protectorate this year. The move was lauded by the Serbian press as a noble effort to “stand side by side with our Russian brothers.” (+3 Stability for Serbia)

RUSSIANS MOVE TO THE WEST. Warsaw, Russian Empire. Last year’s annexation of Austria by the German Empire has proven to be unacceptable to the Russian government. Russian military forces have been called up and deployed to the western frontier. These forces have been training and preparing for what some believe to be an upcoming conflict with Germany.

NEW ENGLAND AND CHINESE WARLORD SIGN AGREEMENT. Nanchang, Jiangxi. With the tumultuous Chinese region of the world finally calming down for the various factions, some bright warlords now look to the future. The Jiangxi government has sealed a deal with the Republic of New England’s government. In exchange for increased New Englander economic rights in the territory controlled by the Jiangxi warlord, the North American republic has promised to return control of the three cities held by their empire in one hundred years’ time.

REBELLION IN THE PHILIPPINES. Manila, Empire of the New England Republic. With the withdrawal of the Filipino garrison to fight in North America, the people of this New Englander colony have risen in open rebellion. The various islands of this chain have been seized by partisan groups, and the various administrators of the empire have been hung or otherwise executed. Only the main city of Manila continues to hold, under the guns of the New Englander Indochinese Squadron and a few token regulars.

EMPEROR RETAINS CONTROL AFTER ATTEMPTED COUP. Zengzhou, Chinese Empire. After last year’s effective annexation of Peking and most of northern China by the Russian Empire, the emperor’s de facto recognition of this was opposed by elements of his remaining military. Several officers led a coup against the emperor, only to be brutally crushed in the new capital of Zengzhou. Many were killed in the fighting, though the emperor continues to retain his control over his faltering empire. In response to this coup, the emperor has agreed to end hostilities with the neighboring warlords, with the sole exception of the belligerent Yunnan warlord, who continues hostilities with most of their neighbors. RIOTS IN JAPANESE KOREA. Tokyo, Korean Empire. A Japanese nationalist group, responding to the infringements of the recent Territorial Redevelopment Project, sparked revolts and riots throughout the cities of Korean Japan. Most of these riots were easily suppressed, though fighting continued for nearly a week in Tokyo. The city was badly damaged in the fighting and has served as a rallying point for Japanese nationalist agitators, calling for freedom from Korea and the reestablishment of a Japanese unified nation. CRISIS DECLINES IN CHINA. Jinan, French Empire. Fighting subsided this year in China, as borders stabilize and the Europeans withdraw. The Russian annexation of northern China hit home, with the Forbidden City now under the direct administration of foreigners. The emperor has fled to Zengzhou, where a new capital for administration has been established. Peace has been signed with the Sinkiang, Shanxi, and Jiangxi warlords, as well as Guangxi. Only Yunnan remains a belligerent power, as they find themselves arrayed against the emperor and an allied warlord in Jiangxi. The French have also withdrawn from the theater, leaving Guangxi to administer its own territory, and pledging it to be a show of goodwill towards stability in Asia. It seems that at last a type of peace is coming to the region.

Chinese Empire: 8 Infantry Brigades, 2 Cavalry Brigades
Jiangxi: 11 Infantry Brigades, 1 Artillery Brigade

SPECIAL: War and Chaos in North America

BATTLE FOR THE ST. LAWRENCE. Buffalo, Republic of New England. As one of the first stages for control in the ongoing war between Quebec and its southern neighbors, New England and Canadian Great Lakes ships assaulted and defeated the Quebecois Great Lakes fleet. The battle was rough and Canadian gunners proved nearly useless in comparison to the New Englanders and to a lesser degree, the Quebecois. Nonetheless, through sheer numbers and determination, the New Englander forces smashed and utterly destroyed Quebec’s navy. During the battle, the two New England ships present managed to weave their way through Quebecois fire and inflicted most of the damage done in the struggle.
Casualty List
Quebec: 2 Destroyers, 3 Light Cruisers, 2 Heavy Cruisers
Canada: 5 Destroyers, 1 Light Cruiser

FIGHT FOR CANADA. Toronto, Canada. Abandoning the old doctrines of pitched battle, the war in the north has become one of total fronts and not singular engagements. Furthermore, the use of cavalry with the new weapons has proven disastrous and heavy casualties have been seen for both sides. Hundreds of thousands of brave Quebecois cavalrymen learned that machine guns are devastating, and many have been maimed or killed in fruitless cavalry charges against Canadian trenches. Despite Canadian control of the river, the Quebecois army has managed to halt a drive towards Montreal and even to drive the Canadians back. A stalemate has erupted on the Niagara Peninsula, as the Canadians desperately attempt to defend their industrial heartland. Elsewhere, the Canadians have been driven back by superior Quebecois numbers and artillery, particularly after a foolish cavalry attack on prepared Quebecois positions all along the border. The Canadians inflicted heavy casualties, but most of the countryside has been overrun, while they maintain fortification around the largest cities. The Canadians, in a daring move, attacked and seized the city of Thunder Bay from the Quebecois, securing Quebec’s main port on the Great Lakes. They have dug in and easily resisted localized counterattacks.
Casualty List
Quebec: 31 Infantry Brigades, 46 Cavalry Brigades, 11 Artillery Brigades
Canada: 26 Infantry Brigades, 37 Cavalry Brigades, 6 Artillery Brigades

FIGHTING IN THE EAST. Halifax, Republic of New England. The first direct involvement of New England in the war came with a confrontation with a French transport group. Attempting to bring nearly a million reinforcements into the North American continent, the French were forced to abandon that plan after the first group was wiped out by New Englander dreadnoughts blockading Quebec’s main ports and shipping routes. Over fifty thousand lives were lost to the Atlantic in the ensuing devastation. Following this success at sea, New Englander armies crossed the Quebec border and shattered standing Quebec border forces. They have achieved control across the entirety of the southern bank of the St. Lawrence, though Quebec’s artillery has managed to prevent the construction of bridges to cross. With the emplacement of these forces, the New Englanders have begun artillery siege of both Montreal and Quebec City, firing shells into both major cities.
Casualty List
Quebec: 9 Infantry Brigades, 16 Cavalry Brigades, 3 Artillery Brigades
New England: 8 Infantry Brigades, 2 Artillery Brigades
French Empire: 8 Infantry Brigades

THE NATIVES FIGHT BACK. Mohawk, Iroquois. Quebecois military forces met with extensive success in the initial invasion of Iroquois territory. The arrival of Nez Perce and Sioux armies, turned the tide to a smaller degree. Though these forces are technologically behind Quebec, they have managed to create a solidified front, holding them back. Like the Quebecois in the east, the natives have had extensive problems, fielding cavalry against Quebec’s modern machine guns, and suffering heavy casualties. The native superior amounts of artillery has managed to hold the Quebec surge back, as trench warfare proves difficult for fighting in maneuvers.
Casualty List
Iroquois: 10 Infantry Brigades, 21 Cavalry Brigades, 1 Artillery Brigade
Nez Perce: 4 Infantry Brigades
Lakota Sioux: 6 Infantry Brigades
Quebec: 8 Infantry Brigades, 5 Cavalry Brigades, 2 Artillery Brigades

LOUISIANAN WAR FOR INDEPENDENCE. New Orleans, Louisiana. To rousing popular support, the former Dominion of Louisiana proclaimed itself an independent empire from France. Emperor Jean I has been crowned, in a regal ceremony at the Consul’s Manor. In response, the French have deployed a large number of troops to respond, from both the north and south of their former possession. The first French force landed south of New Orleans, hoping to seize the city quickly. They met with the heaviest resistance possible, and they were quickly destroyed or forced to surrender by the main Louisianan army. From the north, the French army that had been supporting the Sauk proceeded south, and managed to push the Louisianans back to St. Louis. The nature of the war resembles that of the north, as trenches cross the country in a massive front based war. Advancing has gone more quickly though it has slowed down as the country roads turn to mud in the winter.
Casualty List
Louisiana: 26 Infantry Brigades, 4 Artillery Brigades
French Empire: 16 Infantry Brigades, 2 Cavalry Brigades, 2 Artillery Brigades

FOX RETAKE THEIR NATION. Fox Falls, Fox Republic. The signing of the treaty was believed to have marked the end of conflict between the Fox and Sauk tribes. However, it was stated by the Sauk that they intended to place King Keokuk III as effective head of both countries. This and an attempt to disarm the returning army sparked violence, and the limited Sauk forces were easily detained by the Fox, who disarmed them and deposited them on the border. The Fox republic has been restored and they have reestablished control over their whole nation.

CUBA REBELS. Havana, French Empire. The island of Cuba was sparked into full scale rebellion this year, as guerilla attacks were launched across the whole region. The rebels, using French equipment, have managed to win several victories in the field against the French garrison. Most devastating was an attack upon Havana harbor which sunk a French dreadnought, the FIS Normandy as well as a pair of smaller destroyers. This was confirmed to have been caused by New Englander sea mines, outraging the popular press at home. Cries of “Remember the Normandy” have been heard across France, raising popular support for the war. Several interior garrisons have also been overwhelmed by the rebellion, who have secured control over most of the countryside.
Casualty List
French Empire: 3 Infantry Brigades, 2 Destroyers, 1 Dreadnought

We desperately appeal for economic aid in holding up the stability of our nation. Two EP this turn should be sufficient, but we will need even more down the line to rebuild our shattered nation.

To: Brazil
From: Rio Grande du Sol

We hope to ally ourselves with you to protect our two nations, which are surely on the edge of social and economic development. We must protect ourselves from the imperialist reactionaries.

OOC

@milarqui, your math for unit construction was slightly off, you have received 20 Infantry and 10 Cavalry, not 30 Infantry.

@warman17, only one level of stability can be raised a turn.

@Adrognans, you don’t need to spend anything on upkeep if you’re letting it fall. The extra has been banked.

@all concerned: upgrading infantry requires the tech.

The tech description for moving pictures has been edited.

@Book Budda: Chile’s elections are every five years, and the next one is 1905, so next turn.

@crezth, don’t think it’s quite time for that sort of radio tower just yet, wait for level 2.

@Matt0088: You cannot spend on stability while mobilized.

@Feanor: I did not start the project or do the spending on unifying the two nations, as that didn’t happen.

@those concerned in Brazil: because of the hassle of military deployment and supply, some operations have not taken place yet, just because of the relocation and logistics required to set up such an extended operation.

@churchill_25: should you attempt another rallying of the same amounts of troops that you did this turn, you will face major internal issues. Please IM or PM me about future reasonable recruitment levels.

Just noticed I put up the wrong map, changing now.

OCC: Could somebody with a lot more time than I have label the map? Some nations are easy to figure out but its hard to tell who's who in North America and Eastern Europe.

To The World:

As recent information supplied to us suggest the recent riots within London have a far more sinister origin then first appears we are retiring from the foreign stage and are announcing our neutrality in any conflict that may arise for the time being. We plead our allies understanding at this time (more specific information will be forthcoming) as we deal with those around us who may seek to bring us down in the shadow of international turmoil.

Lurking

I just noted some points in this thread I would like to acknowledge (Most of which are in the beginning of the thread), and that is simply - when people spoke of me destroying Danish-Swedish relations, I giggled. :p

Yea, it was fun.

I'm proud of you. *sniff* You're Danish, or are you just really good digging up information?

Though... What's up with building bridges? One of the bridges (Storebælt) was finished in 1998, and it nearly ruined us as well as requiring the uttermost modern technology. I guess you can build them, but I don't know of the actual stability of them. Then again, it could be that Denmark doesn't suck as much as it did OTL.

... Also, with my 4000th post, I would like to silently state that I do not think a recent action by someone in this forum was a good idea. That is at least what I'll be discussing in the newfound NESer alternate boards.

Nope, Spanish. Only thing I did was take the Wikipedia and find names for the diferent political parties, as well as the architect that designs the Brosskaber project.

Brosskaber Project was started in the hopes that it would reduce the level of coal that the ships going in-between the islands would have to use, but EQ informed me (AFTER I finished the project) that it wasn't giving a thing because, apparently, people in Denmark aren't used to travel on train.

I hope that my newest ideas will work.

Good update as well, EQ. Now, let's see what do I do to "restore Danish honor for the white race". Thanks for the correction in the army math.

Our nation's borders have long been intact, not once have our nations been at war or delt harsh blows to one another. The Andes mountains; the backbone of South America; have kept our countries distant from one another forcing any trade or travel to be had to be done by boat, when a journey could be a scarce 10 miles away.

I propose that we create railroad passes through the Andes mountains so that our nations could be connected overland as well as through ship routes. And perhaps linking up the Buenos Aires Protectorate into our trade network to bring stability to our continent that has been wracked with war these past years.

Adolfo Palma - Prime Minister of the Republica de Chile

Our good relations as of late do not behoove us to war, it would surely be a bloody and meaningless conflict. Can we get an assurance of Dutch neutrality?

State your terms.

You could have said that, if we sent the money, then you sent the Cruiser. It ain't that difficult, and EQ is intelligent enough to understand that if both of us are putting an if-when statement in our orders, then he would have done it.

@EQ: How come I've had 2 elections already in less than 4 years?

Not if those if-when statements are exact inverses. There isn't a logical compromise between the two conditions.

So, this would have been what happened:
- I said "Send Darth the money if he sends the ship"
- Darth said "Send Milarqui the ship if he sends the money"

I see where EQ could have gotten lost, as the condition for the one to happen is for the second to happen and viceversa.

Darth, if, on your honour, you promise me to send the ship without conditions, I promise on my honour to send the 1 EP, without conditions.

@EQ: There are two things I wish to say:

A) Forgiveness if I'm mistaken, but I do not see anything about sharing technologies in the rules? Can we trade blueprints with eachother?
B) I will be gone from Tuesday the 17th to Sunday the 22nd, so please NPC my nation for Update 5. I will still be able to send orders for this update.
