If you look at yourself from these three perspectives:

1. Your own self-perceived capability as for now [is best viewed in relation to 2. and 3. (All your potentiality and flaws you're aware of accounted for)]
2. What others think of you/your social status
3. How far you've reached/your career status [If you're in school/college - this is your career to judge at the moment (flunking, passing, excelling)]

Are they aligned? Are you a a fitting piece in the machinery, or is there a discrepancy somewhere leaving you unsatisfied in any way?

I'm too young for it to be significant yet.

My estimation of my own capabilities far outstrips what others think of me and my career achievements. Given that the substance of my body and what essentially constitutes "me" has existed for billions of years, whatever I might accomplish in this short life is of no consequence. I only pursue that which is enjoyable and makes me happy. I am a hedonist.

Given this perspective, you've got more potential and has probably accomplished more in being alive than some arbitrary, but similar substance in space.

Pretty aligned, I'm capable of nothing, have no social life, and have no career, and will remain that way for the rest of my life unless modern medicine somehow becomes better.

The social aspect seems to suffer here.

I don't think these are quite comparing apples to apples, or at least not the same type of apples. Self-capability implies what you think you're capable of, but not necessarily today. Whereas how far you've reached so far inherently implies now. You might become top-notch, it just doesn't happen overnight. Although perhaps you were meaning the first as capability now.

So I voted somewhat more along the lines of 1 being sense of accomplishment so far. I'd say that so far my sense of that is lower than what others (who've known me awhile) think of how I'm doing, and probably also lower than my career position considering how far along I am in my career. But it's also the most volatile one. And if I consider capability, then I'm more optimistic.

I guess the main two negative factors affecting (1) are, being impatient to see what I do make an impact, and having moved relatively recently and there thus being a lag in the social scene compared to what I'm used to (this is also why 2 varies a lot based on how long I've known people, and could also somewhat be impatience). I found that a non-standard part of my work last weekend had an immediate impact and that was gratifying, but for the most part it takes longer to see an impact. (1) would also be aided by (2) for people I haven't known as long being higher, but most of the time I don't play the part of the outgoing socialite, in part because I'm not as into popular culture as most people.

In terms of cooking, my perceived self-capability depends on whether the fact that I try to avoid dishes that will create lots of dishes is considered, others probably think I can cook well enough to survive but not too much fancy stuff (although I've had good luck when bringing foods to group dinners), and I have no cooking career whatsoever. So, not aligned.

I'm an underachiever but I know I'm capable of more & people I meet seem to respect me & be surprised when I tell them I'm not some sort of professional (I generally try to avoid the subject as I am a bit embarrassed to be underemployed, however I query them about their work as I am always curious how people make a living).

Same as azzaman... I haven't finish University yet so I believe I'm capable of more than I'm currently doing.

That said. I people would vote that #2 is far a head of the other options. Doesn't that mean they have a inferiority complex?

1 and 2 are leagues ahead of 3. 1 is slightly ahead of 2, though I decided to vote for "1 and 2 [ahead of 3]".

A follow-up question: Who's the better judge of your capabilities/competence - you or the people around you?
