A New Dawn Beta Builds

Hmm, I appear to be getting the slowdown problem that StrategyOnly reported on previously. It suddenly started after a certain point (before which all was smooth), but I couldn't determine what it might have been.

To clarify, I don't mean that the turns were slower (which is of course perfectly normal as the game goes on and the CPU gets loaded) but the graphics became all 'stuttery' and jerky. I can't think what might have caused it. Formations mod maybe, due to more units? I should note that I have a pretty decent PC (i7 920 @ 3.33, 6GB RAM, GTX 260) so it must have been something quite taxing on the performance.

Sorry can't be more specific, but let me know if there is any specific detail required for diagnosis.

Saw no one commented on this, and just wanted to concur with Munger. Game going great, no crashes 1100 turn into an eternity game, and suddenly, like a switch, graphics started to stutter when scrolling across map, barb combat really jerky. What was unusual is that it was not a gradual slow down. Turn are still taking the same time, and I have 4GB ram, 512 card and have played to later turns then this on previous beta's and had no stutter at all. Strange? The only differnce is that a did not install blue marble this time (but this should help, not hinder frame rates).

Don't worry, (or rather do...) I have seen this, and am working on it.

Ah, you crack me up Afforess:lol:. Thanks for the fast reply, and I'm just glad to know there is an 'identified' problem.

On a differnt note, the health/happiness battle in beta 10 through the early years was just brilliant, bordering on hard, but thats just how I like it. One possible suggestion, I feel that with all these balances the 10% health bonus from forests is a little harsh (and reduces the need to balance the hold on to forest/slash and burn for production indecision{good indecision} dynamic), I mean ten forest squares for 1 litttle cross. Perhaps something like 20-25% would help here. Now this is just an idea, and of course I will change it in my own game regardless:),

I agree. I love the new health difficulties. It makes me really value techs that give you health buildings and makes me hold off making domestic animals buildings until I have enough health buildings to balance out their unhealthiness.

IDK, I need to look and see how that code works.

@StrategyOnly, what beta version are you playing? Beta 9 had this problem.

Nope, never used beta 9, i went from 8 which had the problem also to 10.

EDIT:

For some reason i chose LIMITED Religions and NOT Choose Religions but it came up as Choose??:(

Also on the date thing, the only problem with it not being there is that the Golden age also is GONE.:mischief:

Is the Bandit Rider balanced? I ask because its the strongest Unit for a long time. Sure it have a High Upkeep and only can build under Survival but STR 8 with a flat 2 Movment sounds to strong especial because this unit also have hiden nationality and still can capture citys. (I play Unmoded Beta 10)

komer,

What type Map are you using? That's an insane amount of resources on your posted screenie. No wonder your complaining about too much food. That's Not a normal map!

@afforess
And that brings up a problem I have noticed with some of the ppl's reports about beta problems. Seems only a few ppl are actually using standard maps on standard setting to "bug hunt". To use Resource "Rich" maps to Beta test skews the data and then we get ppl requesting for cut backs on features/buildings/etc. cause "such and such" is OP. No the problem is testing on Unbalanced resource maps and Unbalanced settings. I want to throw up the "WARNING" Flag! Running a beta under those settings actually Does cause things to Become OP or UP and corrupts the results.

In Komer's defense, he is playing an earth map which usually seed Europe with a lot of resources so the countries are viable when they are packed so close to each other, as opposed to china or russia that has free reign to expand into Siberia.

When you combine that with the relative ease of discovering new resources from your mines and your farms on Snail or Marathon speed, you get a ton of resources by the modern age. It is one of the reasons I like resource depletion from mines. You lose some, and you find some, and it balances out.

But it is true, once you get that many resources, it can skew balance. Personally, I find many of the add-on building packs a bit overpowered, so I don't use the ones I think are kinda redundant. Some of the % gains can be scaled back so the building is only worthwhile for big cities. I like a lot of the changes to flat income gains in the latest betas for this reason. The buildings help small cities, but don't give 15-20 commerce / food to big cities.

Its the huge earth map with 28 civs that comes with ROM. And yea, as explained, it seems europe is intentionally seeded with a lot of resources, making my position even better once I consolidated power across all of western europe.

On another note, I did find a new minor bug in the later game with the UN mission national wonder, see the attachment for more info.

Just to follow up on my earlier complaint about corporate costs, it seems that the cities maintenance modifier is being applied to the corporation maintenance for the city as well. The modifiers are fine when applied to city maintenance, but seem a tad high when applied to corporate maintenance, especially the resource refinement buildings that add as much as 40% to the maintenance cost.

Should this be installed over 1.55 or fresh from RoM 2.81? Would like to try it out.

I would install fresh 2.81 with patch first, that is what I have been doing for each beta release. When in doubt, it is best to just do a fresh install.

Thanks for the replies. I am getting a crash now if I try to load the full of resources map. Any thoughts?

Here's a status update for the beta's.

I'm in a holding pattern, so to speak. BUG/BULL is very very close to an official release. When it get's released, RevDCM will release 2.70. So, I'm holding off on anything until then. Then, I'll merge and release the last beta, beta11. If the merge is good, a week later, I'll move to an official release.

On a more positive note, Dexy released a much enhanced version of Fixed Borders, the AI has been greatly improved, and forts are now much valuable. He'll release the details soon, but I'll be updating that for Beta11 too.

Also, please know, I haven't been sitting idly by, I've been writing code improvements. Over the weekend I made it my project to move all inquisition code into the SDK, which should help the AI use them better, and make the game faster. I just finished that up.

Hopefully you all have had a good weekend. ;)

oh, and strategyOnly,

Seeing how you are the only person reporting that bug, and that older beta's did have it (but Beta10 doesn't), I suspect either you installed the wrong version, or just forgot about it, a simple error. Try doing a completely fresh install with the download from the OP and see if the error is still there. Make sure you delete any malignate and old RoM folders.
