Background: John Raindem, born into a moderately wealthy family, ended up in university after a fairly uneventful childhood. John chose to follow his father into a Bachelor of Business Administration and found the course quite to his liking. During his time at university, John came into contact with Jason Xing (a Chinese student studying a a Bachelor of Fine Arts) whom he became close friends with. John soon found that he was quite interested in the world of film when observing his friend's films and upon completion of his degree, decided that starting a film studio was as good a business as any.

I am sorry that it wasn't posted in the thread, but Red Spy privately confided in me and reserved the third Studio spot. At the beginning of the game, I am limiting the game to 3 starting Studios. I will however be opening it up to 4-5 once the game has been established and to ensure we have enough producers for a good amount of content, so if you want to play as a producer until a spot opens up, that would be fantastic!

Apologies for the delay in starting this thing, I know I promised the start to be friday. Things came up. However...drum roll...

A New Generation

Another generation has moved to Hollywood, seeking fame, riches, and power. All of this can come to those who are the best at what they do. However, Hollywood is a tough market to crack. The newest studios must surmount the problem of starting in near insurmountable debt, while aspiring producers must get a studio to take a chance on their movies.

Soon, soon we shall see a New Generation of movies and movie makers, that shall hopefully revitalize this industry with a little fresh blood.

Okay, so nothing has happened yet to update on. Over the next few days I hope to compile a list of the directors and actors in one place as well as assign salaries for them. However until I do, assume that each level of notoriety equals 5 million dollars in salary. That means a level 5 notoriety director would cost 25 million dollars a year.

If the studios can get their filled schedules in by 11:00 PM EST Wednesday then that will be orders lock. If a studio's orders are still missing, then orders shall not lock until next Monday night, as I will be unavailable to work on anything big from Thursday night on due to RL.

Thats begs the question, what will their schedule need to look like? Each studio could actually choose to only produce one movie a turn in order to limit their debt. However, this is ill advised, since more movies created means a bust can be balanced out by a blockbuster. So each studio should ideally buy the rights to and produce 3 films a turn, and assign each to an ideal showing of Memorial Day, July 4th, or Christmas Day.

That about concludes everything I have to say. Producers, start pitching ideas! Studios, start negotiating and scouting out your next Titanic!

Movie Name: Lands of the Setting Sun

At the end of 1863, the USA prepare to face another year of civil struggle. On a train crossing the state of Missouri en route to California, Naga Takashi is a Japanese officer who underwent training in the US previous and during the Civil War. With him, ten crates of modern rifles purchased by the governor of Saga Domain under instructions of the Imperial Prince.

Unfortunately for Takashi and the arms shipment, the train stops at a town just recently taken by confederate guerrillas, which ambush the Union garrison aboard the train. Barely escaping as the Confederates steal the shipment and kill several recruits, Takashi manages to find alone and capture a scout for the guerrillas, a freed slave called John Mutton.

Stranded in an unknown environment, Takashi forces Mutton to lead him to the guerrillas hideout. Learning that he was forced into working for the guerrillas through threatening his family, Takashi bonds with Mutton. Also being now informed by Mutton that he was never privy to the hideout location but was only picked up by one guerrilla member called Nathan Ramm (who is also their leader) as they headed for their target, they turn back to protect Mutton's family and force Ramm to reveal the location of the weapons.

Along the way they link up with the few Union soldiers who escaped the train ambush, who have been unsuccessfully trying to track the guerrillas as well. The group spends the night together, during which the leader of the Union soldiers tries to slit John's throat. Takashi, with his superior swordsmanship, prevents this and earns the respect of most of the squad.

Although distrustful of Mutton due to his Confederate service, the squad follow him and manage to surprise and kill a couple of guerrillas en route to gather with the rest of the group to prepare the attack on Mutton's place. Information extracted from one of them who resulted badly wounded allows the group to reach the hideout, where the cases lay, but other guerrillas were alerted and they all had already left.

Leaving the weapons behind for the moment, Takashi travels with the squad as Mutton leads them to his house as fast as they can. The company arrives too late and the house is already burning, but Mutton's children managed to escape into the corn fields. As Mutton cries his wife, from the corn fields comes a man from the guerrilla who alerts the rest.

The Union platoon find themselves surrounded by the house on fire. In the ensuing gunfight, most of the guerrilla dies and the few remaining Union soldiers are too tired to pursue. After trying to hawl his men back into fighting, Ramm flees with Takashi on his tail. As they ride out into the plain, Takashi shoots Ramm dead.

Scenes are separated by cuts overseeing the developments of the regrouping Union platoon and the retiring Confederate guerrillas.

Midwestern suburb, 9 AM: The TV news anchorman announces the start of a nuclear war. The United States will vanish from existence in 90 minutes. Judy, a pregnant woman, climbs upstairs to wake up her 6-year old son Jerry. Gary, his husband and reluctant step-father of Jerry, walks down to the basement and opens a massive door, revealing what seems to be a nuclear bunker.

While Jerry and Judy pick up a few clothes, they hear the bunker door shut loudly. As they hurry down to the basement, a confused Jerry lags behind and ends up going outside. Judy finds out that the door has been locked, and Gary is nowhere to be found. She hits, scratches, yells, cries, sobs and begs at the door, to no avail.

Sitting there, leaning against the door, she recalls the many instances of unhappiness when her husband let her down, asking him to forgive her for verbally abusing him. Finally, angered, she resolves to break in by any means available.

She walks back upstairs and out to the back lawn looking for Gary's tools, which are in the garden closet. Mrs Upton, her next-door neighbour, asks her what's going on. Judy goes into the closet, picks several electric saws and varied tools purposed for property destruction and goes back into the house without a word.

A shocked Mrs Upton gets away from the fence while Judy yells at Jerry to get inside and eat his breakfast. Across the lawn, a man can be seen looking at the scene. It's Scott, the other side's neighbour. His torso is nude, and a hand appearing from below him catches his attention. Flashback to when he met Jerry, introducing himself as the new neighbour not a month ago.

Judy plugs the circular saw and tries to cut through metal and concrete. Not long afterwards, the saw lies wrecked at her feet. She is going to try another saw when she hears a noise upstairs. When she goes to investigate, she is confronted by half a dozen of her neighbours. Mrs Upton, her husband, her cousin Sarah, Mr Allen and his partner Linda and Ms Dean. They all confront Judy about her husband, and after threatening to call the police, learn of the 'atomic vault', as Judy puts it.

They all join Judy in her attempts to crack the door or persuade Gary to open it. A police car is seen approaching the house by a tired Allen, who was resting in the living room. Ms Dean informs them that she called the police in advance, just in case. As the officer comes and tries to investigate, the neighbours try to talk him out of it. Feeling something fishy, he finally go downstairs, where Judy knocks him out. In a frenzy, most of the bunch join in beating the officer to death.

As screams and shouting come out of the house, Scott appears at the window again. Judy appears in the opposing window of her house, and Scott recalls watching Gary in that window in the past. Linda joins Judy in her bedroom. Scott draws the curtains. Linda encourages a broken Judy to try one more time. In the living room, the rest of the neighbours scheme and argue over who must go into the vault, which is fitted for four people.

A scantily clad Gary comes in through the kitchen door. While everyone falls silent, he goes downstairs and opens the bunker door. After remarking the inhumanity of his neighbours for killing a cop over Doomsday, he leaves for Scott's house. Jerry, who has spent most time playing with the Upton's children outside, tries to follow, but Gary hits him and tells him to ' off, you and your mom.'

Scott and Gary embrace as shouting resumes in the latter's former house. They kiss and fall to the ground. In the living room, Mrs Upton makes everyone stay silent and decides that their fate must be chosen by luck. Another discussion ensues, during which Judy is stabbed by Sarah, who in turn is bludgeoned by Linda. Mrs Upton cries and jumps on Linda. As Mr Allen tries to push her off his girlfriend, Mr Upton fends him off. When they are about to start fighting, Linda is about to die as Mrs Upton shakes her head against the ground while strangling her. Ms Dean shoots Mr Upton with a shotgun which was in Gary and Judy's bedroom from the stairs, and then Mrs Upton. Judy, Sarah and Linda appear to be dead.

A desolate Mr Allen joins a seemingly indifferent Ms Dean into the vault, while moaning and panting can be heard loudly from Scott's house. More and more neighbours gather around both houses, especially Judy's, as neighbours had been alarmed by the gunshots. What appears to be a shooting star crosses the sky while the kids sit in the back lawn and Scott and Gary climax. People break inside Judy's house and are visibly disgusted at the massacre. Someone notices the bunker downstairs. The shooting star explodes, a white flash blinding everything before a mushroom cloud can be seen and the expansive wave blurs increasingly nearer buildings to rubble. Screen fades to white as panting and moaning can be heard.

There will be additions to the plot - namely, the scene on the Death Star will be much extended, and a few elements from the original drafts will be included.

Such a movie would mean the studio that produces it would have to buy the right to produce a movie based on star wars...for a ballpark number lets say 150 million+.

I can do the budgets. Tonight might be difficult, but tomorrow for sure. Remind me next time you see me active on chat.

The default salary for actors and directors was detailed in Update 0. Its a simple thing. I will add individual salaries for them when I compile a list, however for simplicity those will not take effect until next turn.

When producing something independently, you will say so and NPC investors will invest so much in your movie. As long as it looks promising your entire budget will likely be covered. I will do a post on the current indie film festivals that still have open slots for movies to be entered in, again hopefully tonight, but more likely tomorrow.

There is no compiled list. However, there are some of each in each sign up post which are only scattered throughout 2 forum pages, so its not like you are scanning dozens of pages. Such a list shall be compiled within a few days.

Creating a pitch costs nothing. However when a film is produced either by a studio or an indie producer, that studio/producer must fund the budget of the film and pay the actors/directors. Then they just have to hope the revenue from the box office/winning an indie film festival can cover the budget. Whatever share you get as a producer is entirely up to the contract you negotiate with a studio for buying the rights to one of your movies.

I have seen no activity from the studios and so I am announcing the deadline is officially 12 noon this Sunday. Studios, get busy.
