Overview

Spoiler :
Summer 2014 saw an almost complete 'restart' of the television industry. The new Big Four say resounding successes and complete flops among their many new shows. In fact, almost every single one of the many dozens of shows that aired were brand new in terms of content.

In reviewing the Ratings of the past season, it is quite clear that RBS Broadcast Network clearly and consistently had the superior ratings, and has thus brought in the lion's share of the revenue from advertising. Comcast and OCN were vying for second place, and while Comcast had its standouts, OCN's star shows stood head and shoulders above any other show that aired this season, and perhaps the only reason OCN wasn't first in the rankings was the internal business shakeup that prevented it from fielding a full TV schedule. Wayne Broadcast Television was last in the pack although it fielded several star shows as OCN did. Should Wayne decide to abort this venture into the Television industry, it might be wise for another network, perhaps Comcast or OCN, to pick up its heavy hitters such as Diagnostics or King Saul Boulevard.

What's Hot

Spoiler :
Several shows stood out this past season in terms of ratings, and without further ado, lets get to the top five:

1. Y: Last of Man was fielded by OCN and was the single most successful show this season, crushing the competition in its time slot on friday nights with an averaged rating of 10.8. Heck, even its reruns which were aired periodically throughout the week, managed to get a rating twice as high as some shows. Even if Last of Man should see a dip in its success, it appears certain that it will be a strong choice to win any time slot it is put into.

2. Shadow of Fear was also fielded by OCN, and together with Last of man explains why OCN absolutely dominated on friday nights. Being aired immediately after Last of Man, SoF may have simply rides on the success of LoM, however many think it is a genius show in its own right, and well done as well. Supporting this view is that it routinely went up against the third show on this list as well as one of WBT's favored shows and won against both, if by the skin of its teeth.

3. Amaysing Recovery, fielded by RBS, highlights the popular demand for medically related shows at the moment, and seems to be complemented by its unique sense of humor as well as its fantastic directing, not to mention that its half an hour run time helps when holding the attention of those who typically find their mind wandering.

4. Diagnostics is the other medically related show and was aired by WBT. This show led off the week in the monday 8pm time slot, setting the tone for the rest of the week and informing the other networks that from 8-9pm every week night, WBT was the only channel that mattered.

5. World of Boxing, fielded by RBS, is our fifth and final slot. It is a documentary on the history of boxing, yet its main attraction was most likely the narration of Morgan Freeman. A sort of cult has formed around this TV show and threatens to become violent if it is canceled, yet proclaims that Morgan Freeman is truly the most talented actor in history. Nonetheless, the show did have a very good rating at 8.5, and is certainly expected to be renewed.

What's Not

Spoiler :
While there were several shows that captured viewers' attention and refused to let go, there were also several that threatened to blind viewers outright, whether from poor acting, terrible quality, or simply a bad plot and a terrible sense of humor.

1. The Most Resounding Flop of the season was most likely a Shrimp's Strange Love Affair, which was aired daily in the 5:30 slot and is a symbol for a large part of Comcast's failures this season. Comcast clearly went in with high hopes, giving it a solid time slot all week, and it was sorely disappointed. The ratings themselves may have only been saved by leftover viewers on the channel from Phil Lye.

2. Real Games, a reality show aired by RBG, had perhaps the lowest ratings during the week, and thankfully was not scheduled fro prime time itself, but rather right before it. Perhaps it is just a bad show, or perhaps America just doesn't fancy reality television at the moment. Most believe it is the former.

3. The twin companion of the above, 'What's Real' is quite clearly the third worst show of the season, hardly garnering any more viewers than its companion, and all in all giving RBS a terrible showing for its 6pm time slot all week.

4. Oasis' Places, a kids show that aired every saturday morning was simply disastrous and suffered from low quality, low funding, and simply being unattractive to the kids who woke up that morning to watch cartoons.

5. Firefly 1.5 scrapes onto this list because it quite utterly failed to see a return on the investment Comcast put into it. It is estimated that Comcast paid in excess of 10 million dollars in order to get the show on the air, and it is also estimated that it only made around 3.6 million dollars in advertising revenue due to its ratings. It didn't necessarily have bad ratings like most of the other flops, however it most certainly was a financial disaster for Comcast, and getting rid of this show might serve to begin a Comcast comeback against RBS. The editor that submitted this piece has subsequently been fired. Firefly was far from a resounding success, but it had consistent ratings and saw a fair return on Comcast's investment; that is not to say that it was anywhere near as cost effective as any similarly rated show, and whether Comcast renews such a show rather than going to a show that is cheaper to produce is up in the air.

Sleeper Hits

Spoiler :
There were a couple sleeper hits this season, and the bang for the buck certainly helped their networks out.

1. Phil Lye the Science Spy was likely meant to be filler material alongside the Shrimp show flop, but instead it slowly increased in viewership over the course of the season, and in certain time slots it saw significant viewership, and indeed was one of the highest rated shows on saturday morning.

2. The Polkageist was a lighthearted parody of horror shows, but actually immediately proved a hit with the teenager audience, and instantly proved the best family show on air all summer. This translated into solid ratings all week.

3. Heil Honey, I'm Home surprisingly drew a large audience every time it was on, even with reruns. This is surprising because of the huge controversy it has sparked on talk shows across the country, and congress even tried to censor it, although the president vetoed the legislation. If this show managed to stay on the air, it may indeed remain one of the higher rated shows aired by Comcast.

4. Steel Samurai was a surprise, easily winning the early 8am time slot saturday mornings. Its ratings may be a bit deceiving because not many kids are up yet, and the flood of viewers truly begins around 9am, but it definitely has a moderate and growing audience.

5. 1453 was a steampunk cartoon about the fall on constantinople, and although many had written it off, it seemed that the history part of it was offset by the steampunk and violent aspects of the show, and was highly regarded by children, although some parents are fairly angry about the amount of violence although it is nothing much.

Popular Demand

Spoiler :
Many people have clamored for certain types of shows that haven't been seen this past summer. Their like include such shows as a sports round up show similar to sports center, talk shows, and almost universally missed is an hour of news at 10 and sometime in the afternoon.

Popular demand may also see the rise of more historical shows, such as 1453, and low fantasy shows such as the Dwarven Front and Love and War, as well as Medical shows which are in high demand in the swing of public demand.

Rule Changes

Spoiler :
There will be a number of rule changes. The first and foremost deals with special events. They will be handled differently from now on, and I am not quite sure how, which is why the Special Events spot below is empty as of now. However, I will be sure to handle this promptly, and you can be assured that rights to NFL games through the fall WILL be able to be purchased by the networks, and will be handled much like MLB games were this past turn.

The other rule change has to do with movie production. Due to concerns of both players, potential players, and myself, there will be multiple changes. Independent movies (those made entirely by the producer) will only take one turn to make, however they will cost 2x the acting and staffing costs. Network backed movies will now take 2 turns to make, and will cost 3x the acting cost and 4x the staffing cost. The total cost for a movie must be paid each turn it is in production. The turn it is released revenue from the box office will be available, and all turns after that DVD sales will begin to flow in. How the revenue from the box office and DVD sales is divided between network and producer is up to them. Independent films will compete the turn they are released with other independent films released that turn in a film festival, and the winner will be rewarded a cash prize as an equivalent to a box office revenue stream (although much smaller). If the producer has enough film notoriety (nobody does atm, and will not until they get a few films out there) their independent film will then go to the theaters as well. Either way, the film will go to DVD sales.

Hope that makes sense. Please be aware that the OP will NOT be updated with this immediately, so it will conflict with what is said above.

Two shows and Goliath's first ever movie pitch:

Name: The Renaissance
Genre: Historical Drama
Length: 60 minutes
Acting: 4 A stars (3.2 Million)
Focus: Sets (Particular focus on recreating the artwork made by the Renaissance men featured in the show, along with the beautiful architecture of 1400-1500s Italy)
Staff: Excellent (1.4 M)

Description: The Renaissance is a historical drama that looks into the lives of the four major Renaissance painters/sculptors/architects: Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael. The show will be divided into two parts:

The main part of the show will focus on Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael circa early 1500s (1504-1507ish). Leonardo is approaching old age and is about to die, but still is amazingly able to produce amazing works and scientific notes that could change human development if only people listened to him. Michelangelo is in the prime of his career, and, because of that, he'll be the "main character" of the four. Viewers will see the amount of drama and dedication it took as he painted the ceiling of the Sistine chapel, the construction of David, etc, etc, etc. Finally, Raphael barely an adult, is just starting his own painting career, and viewers will see how we wandered from city to city, trying to seek patronage and creating his earliest artwork. There will be attempts to get the three to interact with each other, even if indirectly. After all, it is a show, and people expect the main characters to interact.

Donatello, who was already dead before Raphael was even born, will be covered in "flashbacks", showing how he was the first one to attempt to revive classical art techniques and give a rebirth in the sphere of art. Actions Donatello does within the show will affect the other three characters, even if he will never actually meet him.

Name: SportsNation with Wayne Gretsky
Genre: Sports News
Length: 30
Acting: A+ single star (1.25)
Focus: Script
Staff: Excellent (1.4 M)

Description: SportsNation is a 30 minute show aired daily, recapping any news in the sports world (results, trades, injuries, etc, etc, etc). The show's main draw will be the host of the show, legendary hockey hall of famer Wayne Gretsky (basically the Michael Jordan of hockey for the uncivilized). As part of the deal, the show is known to have a particular bent towards hockey compared to how popular it actually is in the States, but that should definitely help ratings in the north and in Canada.

Name: The Bloody Sock
Genre: Sports movie
Length: Movie
Acting: 4 A (4.8 M)
Focus: Vivography? (Whatever would cover the scenes of actual baseball played)
Staff: Excellent (4.2 M, go big or go home)

(the four main characters are bolded, will edit in which actor plays who later)

Description: Starting off with manager Little's the disastrous decision to keep a tired Pedro Martinez in the eigth inning of Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS, leaving the Red Sox's lead against 5-2 into a disastrous 5-5 tie. A few innings later, Aaron Boone would hit a home run, winning the game in overtime for the Yankees.

One season later, after being called frauds by particularly the entire sports community and 86 year long drought of winning a championship, the Red Sox are building up for a comeback from one of the most embarrassing chokes in sports history. Little's contract expires, and new manager Terry Fracona takes his place, in the hopes new leadership will bring new life into the team. He is reunited with one of his old pitchers from his tenure in the Phillies, Curt Schilling, who was traded to the Red Sox. Meanwhile, the breakout star David Ortiz is hoping to establish his rookie season was not a fluke, and he is indeed one of the best sluggers in baseball history.

The team starts well in April, but constant injury after injury causes the Red Sox to fall down on the ranking. Hope comes back in July 24, when the Sox win after a five run deficit, along with Jason Vartiek beating up A-Rod. At the trading deadline in 31, controversy is made when the owners trade injury prone yet popular star Nomar Garciaparra for two realitivly unknown players. Yet, despite this, the Red Sox are able to recover from their slump, and secure the wild card slot for the playoffs.

After a brutal sweep of the Angels, the team must face their archnemisis once again, the Yankees. After humiliating losses in the first three games, it looks like Red Sox will choke out of the pennet race once again. Scrub Bernie Williams barely manages to score in the bottom of the 9, tying the game and preventing the Yankees sweep. Ortiz hits home run in overtime, securing the win.

Martiniez pitches the next game, but despite getting seven strikeouts by the sixth inning, the Yankees are up once again, 4-2. The Red Sox once again barely clutches a tie, before another Ortiz home run wins the game for the Boston team in overtime. The infamous game six has Curt Schilling pitching for seven innings, despite injury, eventually causing his legs to bleed (the titular bloody sock). His dedication pays off, and the Red Sox win 4-2. Inspired by the epic comeback the team made, especially by the dedication of Curt and leadership of Fracona, the team enters Game 7 with a sense of pride. An epic destruction of the Yankees commence, with 3 homeruns by Ortiz making the score 10-3. The Red Sox finally defeated their archnemisis, in one of the most amazing comebacks in sports history.

The movie is basically over at this point (The ACLS, not the World Series, is the climax and main source of tension). The movie will gloss over the sweep of the Cardinals in the epilouge, making sure to mention the blood-red lunar eclipse during the final game. For the first time in 86 years, the Red Sox are finally champions.

Arya, how do last season's shows work now? I assume late night shows and cartoons will keep getting new episodes, but what about reruns? Also how much money do us producers have?

Anyway, I still have the following unsold pitches:

Reality Show Show (reality show)
30 minutes
Ensemble (a lot)
C-Level
Videography
Excellent crew

A reality show about the crew of a reality show. The crew is literally starring in its own show.
Redemption (explosion/comedy)
Film
Multi-Star (3)
A+ Level
Post-production/CGI
Good Crew

Michael Bay directs an actually interesting film because it's about him finding humans silly creatures instead of alien robots he doesn't give a crap about. Primarily concerns itself with the folly of man, satire, and explosions. Stars Michael Biehn and the Rock as a formerly disgraced commando duo trying to stop Christopher Walken as a terrorist/expy of the Riddler from blowing up the Cristo Redentor, which would throw all of Brazil into chaos, thereby causing an invasion of America because of radical extremism.

Sone also bought the rights to this but did bugger all with them so it's on sale again I guess:
Roosevelt and Roosevelt
60 minutes
Multi-Star (2)
B-Level
Script
Good crew

Teddy and FDR compare their successes, failures, and legacies in this educational historical thing. They go on to examine the history of America, up until the present day.

Also, it's probably worth noting that Firefly season 2 would be about $1.6m cheaper to fund because two of the actors are leaving the show. That leaves it at $5.6m instead of $7.4m, which is a much more reasonable figure in my opinion.

Evening News with Bruce Deansbury and Sharon Atkinson (is evening more watched OTL than daily?)
news show
60 minutes
A acting ($1.6m)
Multi-Star (2)
excellent crew ($1.4m)
audio focus (what the hell should be the focus of a news show)
Top-dollar evening news; mostly American.

Daily News with Snapper Carr and Alison Shields
news show
60 minutes
B acting ($400k)
Multi-Star (2)
goodcrew ($400k)
audio focus
Daily news; mostly American.

International Report with Amanda Weatherspoon and Manuel Cortez
news show
60 minutes
B acting ($400k)
Multi-Star (2)
good crew ($400k)

International news show.

Breaking News! with Old Hickory and Davy Crockett
historical/comedy news show
60 minutes
A acting ($1.6m)
Multi-Star (2)
good crew ($400k)
script focus
Comedy news show that reports historical events like they're currently happening.

NOTE: Upon recent consideration, Roosevelt and Roosevelt may be given a similar concept to Breaking News! Inquire within chat.

Crime Time
crime procedural dramedy
60 minutes
A acting ($4m)
Multi-Star (4)
excellent crew ($1.4m)
script focus
Crime-solving takes a unique turn when Dr. Marco Bowen, employed by a forensics lab, stumbles across the secret for time travel. The only hitch is his prototype machine can only be used to go back three years at most, and the traveler can only observe from a fixed location, appearing invisible to all but a few rather unique people. During a test run back two years, one of these special folk spots him. A day after the test, she is introduced as his new lab assistant. They and two other members of the lab go on to solve a variety of capers where time travel plays a vital role. Witty writing ensures the audience will be either on the edge of their seats or laughing.

What about Jade Swordsman? I thought mech had bought it. Will it be broadcasted next turn or did mech not have it in his program?

(I have 1.5 million, since mech gave me 900k)

The Book and the Sword
Wuxia
60 Minutes
Multi-Star (5)
B Level ($1,000,000)
Post-Production/CGI
Good ($400K)

This TV series is an adaption of the famous Jin Yong novel "The Book and the Sword". Published in 1955, this was Jin Yong's first novel and this adaption will try to be as faithfully as it can to the book.

The Red Flower Society is a secret society that aims to overthrow the Manchu-led Qing dynasty and restore Han Chinese rule in China. The society is led by a total of 15 leaders with Chen Jialuo as their chief. The fourth leader Wen Tailai is ambushed and arrested on the order of the Qianlong Emperor because he knows a secret about the emperor and the emperor wants to silence him.

The story's development is mostly based on the society's repeated attempts to rescue Wen Tailai, intertwined with two or more lengthy subplots. The heroes encounter some Islamic tribesmen, who are pursuing a convoy of hired escorts who have robbed them of their holy artefact, a Quran. Chen Jialuo aids the tribesmen in defeating the mercenaries and recovers the holy book. He earns the respect and admiration of Huoqingtong, the daughter of the tribe's leader. Throughout the story, some of the heroes eventually find their rights after braving danger together - Xu Tianhong and Yu Yutong marry Zhou Qi and Li Yuanzhi respectively.

Chen Jialuo and the heroes follow the trail of the convoy escorting Wen Tailai and arrive in Hangzhou. There, Chen Jialuo coincidentally meets the Qianlong Emperor, who is disguised as a rich man, and they strike up a friendship. However, later when they discover each other's true identities, they become wary and suspicious. Qianlong's best warriors are defeated by the society's leaders in a martial arts contest and the emperor feels humiliated. He wants to summon his army to eradicate the society but refrains from doing so because he is aware of the society's strong influence and connections in Hangzhou.

When Chen Jialuo finally rescues Wen Tailai, he is shocked to learn that the Qianlong Emperor is not a Manchu, but rather, a Han Chinese. Even more shockingly, Wen reveals that Qianlong is actually Chen's elder brother, who, at birth, was switched places with the Yongzheng Emperor's daughter. Chen Jialuo and the heroes take Qianlong hostage and try to persuade him to acknowledge his ethnicity. They suggest that he use his authority to drive the Manchus out of the Central Plains and assure him that he will still remain as emperor after that. Qianlong reluctantly agrees and takes an oath of alliance with the heroes.

At the same time, the Qing army invades northwestern China, where the Islamic tribe lives, and Chen Jialuo travels there to help his friends. He meets Huoqingtong again and her younger sister, Kasili (Princess Fragrance). Chen falls in love with Kasili and finds himself entangled in a love triangle, because Huoqingtong also has romantic feelings for him. The Islamic tribe is eventually annihilated by the Qing army and Kasili is captured and brought back to the Qing capital Beijing.

The Qianlong Emperor is attracted to Kasili's beauty and tries to force her to become his concubine but she refuses. Chen Jialuo infiltrates the palace to meet Qianlong and remind him about their pact, whilst affirming that he will persuade Kasili to marry the emperor. Kasili later discovers that Qianlong has broken his promise and is secretly plotting to destroy the Red Flower Society, so she commits suicide to warn Chen. The society's members are angry with the emperor for renouncing his oath and they storm the palace. Qianlong is defeated and forced to come to a truce with the heroes. Chen Jialuo and his friends then return to the western regions after paying respects at Kasili's tomb.

Name: The Strategists
Genre: Political Thriller/Political Drama/Action
Duration: 60 Minutes
Starring: 6 A-Level Stars ($ 4.8 Million)
Staff Quality: Excellent (Focus: Script/Director)
Premise:

The Strategists takes place in the mid-1970s to mid-1980s within the midst of a Cold War against the Soviet Union. As the United States struggle for the control and support of smaller proxy states around the world in its fight against the increasingly threatening spread of Communism, the government decided to take some weight off the already overstretched state secret agencies such as the CIA and outsource the more menial tasks to private intelligence companies. One of those companies is the PrimeOne. PrimeOne, which normally conduct works such as collecting data and information for private companies against their client's rivals, are now tasked by the government to engage in operations around the world with or against various state governments, in order to impose Pro-American regimes.

The show involves how 6 "Agents" of the company try to work together to achieve their tasks around the world in the name of American interests using whatever means necessary, from persuasion, consolation, bribery, to threat, murder, and sexual seduction; Sometimes working against an entire country, operating in the midst of political turmoil, or even under the threat of being killed by their Soviet counterparts. All of that while trying to resolve their own internal problems such as disagreement and infighting between fellow agents, regrets and doubts of their action, love affair between them, moments when they grew too much sentiment towards the clients they are supposed to eliminate, and also the uncertainty of their fate in the future.

While the main story is entirely fiction, there are crossovers with real historical occurrences that is incorporated into the story, such as Suharto's Communist purges in Indonesia, Pinochet's ousting of Allende, Philippines's corrupt Ferdinand Marcos, Contras vs Sandinistas, Islamic Revolution in Iran, and numerous other political crisis that takes place within the era. The show serves both as an entertaining action filled drama with great emotional moments and dialogue that emphasizes greatly on human relations between the characters both main characters and side characters and also as a subtle remainder of the horrible implications that the United States have done towards numerous populations around the world in order to achieve its interests.

THE UPDATE!
I'd like to submit a request for the update to contain something tracking producer budgets as well in future.

OCN is looking for at least 5 new shows if not more to add to its lineup, especially a sports talk show. We will also be discussing raises and future seasons with producers shortly.
We hope these raises will take certain records into account... ;)

Proposal 7:
Show Name: Under the Mask: Schools and Supers

Response pending other offers, since RBS previously expressed interest.

Proposal 1:

This doesn't seem unreasonable. We accept.
Tropey McCliche wonders if you missed this, since the show does not appear to have been aired on your network at any point.
