aCK-1 Behaving Ourselves

Alright, so now it's time to delve into city tile management.

I was going to do a post with pictures and stuff, but the signs in Civ aren't really pretty to screenshot, and I didn't really want to photoshop everything again, so just going to be ugly walls of summary text.

---

Ok, so starting with Rostov, as that is most important. I've signed ONE extra farm, and it's basically the only tile I can't put a workshop on, so we're good to go here. Post Biology we'll have 36 food here, good for a population of 18. However, we don't want to work the 3 water tiles, and we obviously can't work the mountain, so only really need 18 people. That wins us two engineer specs.

The workshops are first priority to lay down, as they will act as food stalling mechanisms. They're pretty lousy at 1 hammer, but they can quickly be converted to 2 hammers (only slightly worse than a grasshill mine) by switching to Caste System, and Guilds is not far away either.

The blank plains tile should be improved last, as there are forests around and a chance of getting spread there. If we end up with a forest on that tile, a lumbermill obviously beats a workshop handily (and we'll need a supermarket to stagnate).

---

Next, we'll look at the much maligned Nova, relentlessly whipped for way too long. We already have 35 food here, putting down a farm gets us to 36 (18 citizens, which is enough to work all tiles), and post bio + supermarket wins us a spec.

The one farm is also put in a place where it can easily provide irrigation to Yakutsk and Vladivostock, so it's position is important. Everything else can be cottages, other than the hills, which can be mined (can also cottage the grass hill, but that seems questionable).

---

Yakutsk (Sally Dot) is filler to the other towns, so will only get 12 tiles of it's own to work, basically its tiles that don't overlap other towns.

It needs two farms to continue the irrigation to Vlad, and everything else can be dedicated to production in this small town, since it has 3 mineable tiles, and 4 forests for later lumbermills. In no rush to contribute, so we can wait for those lumbermills.

---

St. Petes is tricky in that it's caught in a never ending culture battle (until we end Rammy), such that it needs to be able to hold its own and build what it needs in a timely fashion. The food count here is also pretty awful.

So we basically need to use a mix of farms and watermills to complement the mines already here. The town has too big of a food deficit to use as a cottage city (we need too many farms, and the hills are eating up food), so it's basically defacto production.

---

Vlad is getting it's water supply from Yak to run farms. These farms won't be suitable to run until we hit Biology (they are all plains). There are two trains of thought here really. We can use this town as a low population GP farm (hills and plains useless for running many GPs), or we can leverage the hills into some production. This will probably be our only other naval town other than Rostov that is any good, so I'd favour the second option.

Note that there is no possible way to get water to that rice without ripping out 3 improvements in Rostov (not what we want to do).

---

Yaroslavl has enough hills to eek out decent production, while having enough flats and enough food to run cottages. So we'll do both, and make this town a hybrid town. It needs only a few more farms (will take back the grass farm from Yak when it has grown a bit) and all the rest is cottages and mines.

---

Forest Green has 33 base food before ANY improvements. Staggering. We only need 38 food here (sans specs) due to one of the grass hills belonging to Moscow. Improve the cows and we're at 34 food. Two farms on the floods brings us to 36 food, and post bio we're at 38 food (can ignore the hill plains hill until then if we want).

So everything else gets cottaged on account of this city being in the back and nice and safe.

---

And that's about it for now. I don't want to deal with stuff like Black Dot yet, as it's contingent on forest spreads and honestly has no real food.

Cyan is filler as all tiles are plains, honestly though with a fish tile, we can run 6 plains cottages for kicks. Water is available from Moscow if it's needed.

White dot is filler. All plains and tundra. Make this a size 4 city working the Sheep, the copper, and two plains hill mines and I'll be happy. We have options to pull water from Black Dot and possibly Cyan Dot, but it makes little sense to do so until post bio, as we'll be gaining something like 1 hammer per citizen, which is pretty bad.

Purple Love Dot is actually viable right now. 9 food in the two deer and the city square so can run a few specs. Not really that exciting except for the extra health from the deer.

Save attached has mass sign spam. You can delete the signs as the improvements are finished.

 I am back home and... well, to be frank, this thread is a huge wall of text. My brain died at page 7, so I am not entirely back on track when it comes to this game. If someone could recap to me what happened after the drawing with the nice, cosy, pink square, then I would be as happy as a little girl (this is not a Cathy-is-dirty reference, but a reference to Mike Myers' extremely odd sense of humour).

Silver...I haven't looked at your save yet but I'm afraid to.

You spammed almost 5 KB worth of signs!!!

You sneaky buggers. Here I am following the Boffo games and you sneak this one in w/o telling me....

learning lots from this and have a few questions....

Towns maintenance goes up as it grows....I feel really stupid NOT knowing this as it's simple as pie.

I still don't quite get overflow properly. I know BUG tells you what you get...but could someone give me the Coles notes version of whipping into out of buildings/sets/workers

This is a great game and in depth.....consider me another loyal reader/follower and fan!

Correct. Maintenance comes from:
Size,
Distance to Palace/FP/Versailles,
and eventual Colonial maintenance (sea between city and capital).

I still don't quite get overflow properly. I know BUG tells you what you get...but could someone give me the Coles notes version of whipping into out of buildings/sets/workers

Whipping just before a build passes the mark between 2pop whip and 1pop whip means that that 2nd populations hammers will mostly be overflow - this is the most common thing to do. A 2pop whip still only claims one :), but reduced "crowded" with2, thus allowing a fast regrowth. So you could 2pop-whip to finish a Worker when you need just above 45 hammers (a popwhip is 45 before modifiers on Epic) to carry whipping overflow into something you can work while regrowing one of the pop points.

You need to take care of modifiers though - Per example, we have +50% on Settlers from our Imperialistic trait, so in order to 2pop-whip, we would have to need more than 45*1,5=67 hammers in the Settler build.

A 2-pop whip of a settler if you are Imperialistic is brutally efficient, as it's 135 hammers on Epic (2x45x1.5). A settler is only 149 hammers. So you're honestly only on the hook for 14 hammers (which if you're using actual hammers and not food-hammers, also benefit from Imp).

For a 2-pop whip, you need 4 population. Growth points are 33, 36, and 39 food for size 4. So it costs you 36+39= 75 food for 135 hammers. A great deal in any case.

The comparison is even more odious if you have a Granary. Granary saves half the food when growing a size. So if you've had a Granary in place for a while, it is really costing you 18+20= 38 food. 38 food for 135 hammers? Sign me up!

Alright take a moment to survey our kingdom...
Alright take another moment to let my eyes unbug out...

Pregame:

Everything seems to be laid out for me...problem is now I'm not so sure which improvements are top priority. I'll figure it out! Whack enter!

Moscow finishes third settler and begins SP fake build

Forge chopped out in Nova...with Lit in four turns I will start a market but we should switch over to GLib ASAP.

Rostov xbow>xbow

I move the warrior in rostov over to the newly founded dots for garrison rather than deleting them just yet.

I wonder how long this has been here? Sounds like a job for Gus and Anton!

Smol gets it just fine though

Vlad can finally whip its lighthouse...40 overflow into the courthouse!

Orenburg gets confused

Oh by the way I am moving the third settler up to rostov to hop on the healing galley and maybe head over to the dye island...or perhaps a suitable site in the newly scouted north...we can discuss later as my set is up in 3 turns

Literacy in...compass as a placeholder.

Literature.jpg

Wrapup:

We have a healing galley and a settler in rostov...however there was a barb galley in our waters last turn...so be careful.

Pete is back to building a missionary...maybe we could scout out Ram and Wang with the first one and the next one can try to spread to Yek again (our only unconfused? city left)

Moscow is working on the SP so whatever lurker is after me should keep an eye on it.

I plugged the GLib into Nova so chop chop away.

Yek just whipped a courthouse so next player can plug in a build.

For clarification...Smol is working the silk rather than the cows because the borders only popped it three turns ago...at that time working the cows would grow in 13 and build in 12...working the silk meant growing in 26 but workboat in 8. Getting the fishies quicker seemed correct. I think I will check the math later to see if I am right.

We get a great scientist in Nova in 23 turns. I ran two scientists there the whole time...should I have fired a scientist occasionally to promote even quicker growth?
For example...right now in Nova if we fire a scientist and work the wine we lose 3GP points and 1.5 beakers but we gain 1.2 coins and grow the next turn. Then on the next turn we can continue working the wine and rehire the scientist. Is that what you meant by micromanaging Nova?
Cuz if it was...I didn't do it.

Any tips on managing things with Photobucket would be helpful. I have albums for each SG but after a couple more sets its gonna get a little hairy. Just trying to speed up the process.

Those mega gold trades...should have I taken one of them...thinking the Ramesses trade MC for Mono +500 gold was one that could have been made...what do you think?

Attachments

First, need a save

Secondly, it looks like fairly good turns. Yeah, my sign spamming was obnoxious, but Liq said "don't worry" due to it being a learning SG :crazyeye:. Solidly done settler spam, and it looks like there's more room for expansion with those islands.

Techs for cash, honestly have to compare the total values. If you're not losing more than 150ish modified beakers, it's probably a good deal coming from the AI. Can always try to renegotiate for more gold from the AI.

Save in now...was uploading while you posted.:)

Sorry if I gave you a hard time about the sign spam Silver...I am sure it was incredibly tedious.
But without it I would have undoubtedly made mistakes so it was well worth it. So thank you!!!

One thing I noticed...can irrigation spread kittykorner? Never knew that.

Nice turns mate and great report. Looking like we need to spam towns in the northern islands eh.

Anyway Thinking mc for the 500 gold crap tech is good. Silver is more into counting beakers than liq is.

Great catch on the Christianity thing btw mate.

ok here's a WTH dot for that settler.
ack01500ADishYellowIrondot.jpg

The reason for this bizarre dot of WTH is because my cat, the lovable Asha, the rescue snowshoe Siamese, jumped on my mouse then used it as a springboard to hop on my keyboard, place her front paws around my neck and lick my face for attention.

Took a few mins to figure out how to get it back to normal but by then it was too late, Asha had already cropped the picture and saved it as a jpg... all while purring.

Or something like that.

So yeah time to spam boats and crap to colonize those islands!

BTW, liq was smoking. If we can get the SP that's building, keep it! Free Religion would own.

oh and arl, did you want to take my turn this set? silver will post the play by play doubtless.

Cheers!
-Liq

Ok, taking a look at sturick's save. Everything looks pretty solid. Some good whipping going on in the newer cities to get the core buildings up, so no complaints there :p

One thing is the 3 workers at Rostov. Jungle cutting is intensive work, and workers should usually be grouped together to slash down jungle faster. That will allow us to get individual tiles up and running that much faster.

Nothing much else, except we need to start pushing more military now as I note a bunch of towns have no defense. St. Petes can do this instead of building missionaries, because the missionaries aren't a big deal and can wait.

Need a few more boats out of Rostov and a town to volunteer to manufacture Settlers for those islands. The intercontinental trade routes will really rock, and there are a lot more islands than I thought. Need to see more of everything before dotmapping, although Liq's dot looks good.

We might as well just build SP, as almost no one else even has Aesthetics, and we'll win Free Religion with it.

btw with the bucket... honestly what was anyone thinking when they put that name up for thought?

anyway what a liq does is have albums for each sg then as I crop the pictures in photoshop (everything goes though photoshop) I name them the year the AD/BC and some stilly name...

example
500ishAD WTH iron yellow dot.jpg

Upload them in bulk to the bucket and cut and paste the img tags into the report that's in the other monitor.

About the Photoshop well that's an entirely different ball of pain and anguish.:D after several thousand pictures though it does almost all I need it to.

Cheers!
-Liq

Oops, completely forgot to address sturick's question there, but I see Liq got to it. Oh well, S.ilver uses a slightly different method. All pics are obviously associated with a set, so I group them according to set. So a picture of Mining being discovered in the first set would be set1mining.jpg or whatever.

Obviously a good idea to sort them into albums based on SG. S.ilver didn't do that initially, so the root folder is full of all sorts of junk from FS-1 to NCSG5 >.<

Is it my time to drown in the ocean of signs and micromanaging now?

Preturn:
ok so let's revive this sg.
First off can I trade mc still... nope, ug... all I see to trade is mono which is a farging one turn tech so I slot that in now.

Economy is doing well considering the rate at which we are expanding.

Mass islands up north going to need to check that out and spam yellow iron dot. That's going to hurt the pocket book haha.

Canceling a pack of worker actions to help everything around nova for the glib.

Fix some random tiles in towns and fire one of the scientists to work the wine and speed up growth a turn. Good to see these Towns well whipped!!!

[1]610 AD
Burger king comes looking for open borders and well heck, sure thing man. Helps our economy a lot so he Prolly has a few island towns.

610ADbugerkingtrade.jpg

Yup!

Orenburg (forest green) pops it's borders so it now has access to it's other floods... uh too bad no workers to spare haha.

Yek (blackdot) finishes Its courthouse which means its core buildings are finished.. good job! So it can how suck in peace hahah. Place it on a seriously slow barracks but growth in one turn where it can work a mined hill, plains or grass! Really not that horrible a town.

A great Merchant pops somewhere hehe.

610ADmono.jpg

Oh crappy mono pops and slot in compass in 8ish... even after I fire the other scientist in Nova! So nova is now pushing a decent 12 hammers per turn into the Glib which is about to get a ton of chops going for it. Should finish on turn 12ish if nothing bad happens.

With both scientists banished to the mines, next great peoples are supposedly from Moscow in 32 as a great Spy hehe.. well glib should be done by turn 15.

610ADNotrades.jpg

No one really has crap to trade for but Rammy is researching currency I notice, ok can get 620 gold from him for it so good to go.

762 gold now I push science to 100% to kill compass off in 5 and optics in 8ish. -55ish gold a turn but that's only going to get worse.

[2]625 AD

Settler is on the way to yellow dot while a barb galley appears nears Vlad's fishies, sigh.

625ADbarbgalley.jpg

Nothing I can do, need to place a trireme there.

Yak's forge is 2 pop whipable so that's exactly what happens. Slot the Courthouse next.

Run an xbow from Rostov to hop on the galley headed to yellow dot hehe.

[3]640 AD
barb galley pops on vlads fishies =/
Xbow finishes in Rostov onto a 5 turn trireme.

Baudica has a chariot poking around our borders so close borders with the psycho. she's so effing random in who she attacks better be prepared.

spying hits on Wang thanks to all these whipped courthouses and I see he is 1 turn from researching aes... well ok I trade the tech to him for 75 gold... keep in mind at higher level difficulties there's a "we fear you are becoming too advanced" mod for number of teched an AI will trade... so slumming crap like this fro gold is a bad idea at emp + level kids!

[4]655 AD
Fred comes demanding currency, eff you buddy.

Pete pops an xbow only for liq to realize the town doesn't have a barracks haha... ok. 4 turns for that. oh well with baud in we have too much mode, an xbow in hand is worth 2 in the hills. er.. whatever.

Yarl builds it's barracks and it's as fast as pete's for spamming xbows in 5 turns... sad. Pete's just effing sucks where it is, LISTEN TO THE BLOODY DOT MAP DE. That and get it though your head cows are 2nd tier food at best.

anyway with all those chariots prowling our borders wise to get a spear going.

Vlad's fishes are officially toast.

Rostov is sick at 9 population but need boats out. I work a generic citizen until that water wheel finishes, is enough to cut a turn off the trireme.

Off load the settler onto fish island. Giza hasn;t popped borders yet yay.

lol a baud scout was trapped in a culture bubble and it's gone now, she must have destroyed it.

Trust that wild woman as far as I can toss her.

[5]670 AD
Ok! So Barb Town vs Gus!!

73% odds and he wipes the floor with that archerr wow. 4.2 health left... since Anton is a medic he;'ll heal up. 9/10 exp for Big Man status!

Smolensk finishes it's work boat but with that barb there going to wait on settling the fish.

Vlad can 2 pop it's courthouse so I do just that. Forge is next.

hmm baud chariot near Rostov now, going to move workers awayish. Also stop all chops to place a spear on queue in nova. Have a feeling that chariot is about to dow on us hahaha.

[6]685 AD
Yep she sure does!
685ADBauddow.jpg

WAR HORNS!

685ADbaudstackofwimp.jpg

Yup a single chariot haha.

a chop goes into a spearman in nova on accident but that's fine, better than whipping the population.

685ADharboars.jpg

Anyway tech in and 7 turn on optics. we have enough gold to go 100% science on it.
[7]700 AD

700ADspinelesswang.jpg

WAR HORNS!

lolz Baud obviously paid for this... man you know how many times the screen shot didn't take, Had to reboot the pc as CIV is lagging hard.

Baud rushes to the rice at Rostov to pillage. Rostov has a fortified x bow in it to defend and Trireme builds so slot in a spear to punk that thing.

slot in x bows all along the border in case anything needs to get whipped.

700ADyellowdot.jpg

Oh and Yellow dot founds, draining our finances hehe. Be fun to see how that towns culture really screws over Rammy's pos town.

[8]715 AD
No idea WTH baud is doing... Chariot is frozen on Rostov's rice and didn't even pillage it, whip a spear in Rostov to take that pos out.

No sign of wang either, not surprising as that push over caves into pretty much every demand.

[9]730 AD

730ADpunk.jpg

Spear 99% punks that pos chariot

gus easily takes out the pos barb town as well for his 10th exp.

[10]745 AD
745ADBigmanGus.jpg

Ok well he's all healed up and ready to head on over to wang's area of town.

That spear was flawless I guess haha. Jim Sacia it is!

barb galley that ate Vlads fish is still in the area so going to punk that bs soon.

[11]760 AD
man we got 4 GG points from that single spear exp... send more crap over baud!!!

Whip the courthouse in Vlad and since there's some overflow, I place another effing workboat in there.

[12]775 AD
775ADOptics.jpg

Turn science to 0% as we can use some gold.
Rostov has one turn left on a trireme so

Final Chop goes into nova's never ending Glib hehe. half a forest went into a spearman but well better safe than sorry. Good thing the baud chariot just decided to sit on the rice and zone out...

[13]790 AD
790ADGlib.jpg

Nice timing eh?

Place science at 50% and Civil is in 790

[14]805 AD
805ADSP.jpg

Not even close as wang picked up aes just a bit ago.

Push an xbow in Moscow and revolt to free religion.

Oh and that effing barb galley is punking Smol's fish lolol.

[15]820 AD

805ADFR.jpg

Out of revolt

820adgalleypunk.jpg

Barb galley is finally punked.

get 20 gold for peace from baud rofl.. wang will still not talk.

8 turns on Great Scientist... bulb philo.

Wang still is at war though he's not sent a single unit out at us hehe.

Statue of Zeus finished so most likely Burgerking's

Anyway most towns are out of the core building mode and workers are free to improve their tiles again after all that glib chopping haha. Had the workers running around dodging borders so they are all over the place. Concentrate on getting some cottages up first since most of the major food is done.

Fun rounds.

Research is locked on lib though civil. Yeah feudalism would have been slightly faster but we want the irrigation.

Orenburg needs it's granary whipped next turn.

Rostov is on a caveral, that puppy needs to go EAST for the circum bonus!

The explorer in pete's is for the second caveral to help explore the north.

Cheers!
-Liq

Out of commission for a few days over here...sorry bout that.
Nice turns Liq!

Well we are finally at "war". What Boudica couldn't find anyone closer or weaker to declare on...and she couldn't find anyone wimpier to help her out huh?

Gonna look at the save...good to be back!
