What do you guys think about affirmative action? Personaly I am against it. And heres an example of why...... To become a fireman you have to take a test, and they take all the top 20 or so scores from that test as fireman. Lets say theres 100 people taking that test but bc of affirative action atleast half must be minorities. Now out of the top 20 lets say 15 are white males. This means atleast 5 of those white males who did better on the test will not become firemen, which means 5 minorities or women who didn't score as well on the test will get the job over those 5 white males who scored in the top 20. Now ask yourself, when your house is on fire who do you want saving you? The 5 guys who didn't get the job bc the fact that they are white males or the people who scored lower and got the job bc they are a minority or a woman? Just something to think about.... I am not racist at all, its just this is one thing that bothers me ver dearly!

This is an example of reverse racism. People should be judged on their worth and ability to contribute to society rather than skin color, race, gender, religion, etc.

I agree but this is the 50 thousandth time we're discussing affirmative action, and as of yet, I don't know one person who has stood up to defend it.

Unless this thread becomes special, it will soon resign to the junk heap before somebody else makes another AF thread in a month or so.

A better thread should be "No affirmative action at all, or class-based affirmative action"

Hell, I'll defend it.

If it wasn't for AA, my pop (an Indian) wouldn't have gotten the job he did without it. They even said "We're low on our quota. If you work out, great, if not, c-ya."

Of course, he also taught me to use the system and get what I can from it.

But honestly, I'd rather see merit based rather than racial based qualifications for jobs and whatnot. . . but OTOH, if I've got an advantage, I'm gonna try and use it, too.

Its doomed anyway. The Supreme Court gave it mouth to mouth earlier this year, but even they put a time limit on it. In 25 years its supposed to be gone.

That is sickening that in 25 years it will be gone! So great when I am thinking about retirement I won't have to worry about it anymore

It's outlived whatever usefulness it had. I'm sure back through the '60s and '70s, there was a real reason to try to enforce these quotas. Now that a generation that was brought up during the Civil Rights Movement is here...there is a far less need for this. Those people that will hire and judge on race, sex, religion, so on...they can be dealt with by the anti-discrimination laws in place. If they really have a lot of low-quality applicants who happen to be minorities...well, that's the break...you do need the highest quality employees, students, so on, as possible, no matter what race, religion, so on.

Might I remind you all that minorities still have a lower standard of living and a greater perportion of people under the poverty line, the disadvantage is still there, and affirmative action should still be a tool to combating it.

You arent qualified for this job, but you have an incredible amount of melanin in you skin. How soon can you start? PUHleeze, affirmative action is the worst racism of all: patronizing racism.

Then target people with low incomes for action not races, religons, sex, etc...

Helping minorities over the poverty line needs to come in the form of actual aid [education first and foremost!], not pampering. Affirmative action is racist and sexist, but I would't oppose an economic affirmative action - although, being upper middle class and entering a tight job market, I might not find it in my interests to come out in total support of it.

Dramatic aid IS needed for minorities. That aid will never be effective as long as it splits the poor black community from the poor everyone-else community with divisive AA.

So helping minorities that are under the poverty line is a good thing and why affirmative action is needed....but who cares about the white people under the poverty line? I get it....

Actually, I'd rather see something that would help out the lower class people, no matter the race, sex, religion...so on.

If the lower class wants to get out of poverty they should work their way out of it. Most of the people under the poverty line, in my experience anyway, are there either because they are just lazy, or thier parents are lazy and they are too young to move out and get on with thier own life.

It may sound rude but I agree 100% I came from upper middle class but this does not mean that my parents helped me achieve any sucess, I have been working since the age of 9, I had a paper route, at 14 I got my first serious job, maid at a hotel...and have never stopped working for more then a few months. I live on my own and am compeltly financially independent from my parents they give me no aid whatso ever, and I still manage to work and go to college. If I can do this with no help from my parents then there is no reason any poor child couldn't do this.

The only thing my parents gave me that a poor child's parents might not give them is a good work ethic.
