AG10 - OCC Conquest (Emperor)

Come to think of it, I don't really feel comfortable playing with such time constraints. Please skip me. Even if I don't get up again, I'll still be following.

I really don't want to just play a game with only 3 person, but again, at this crucial point if people don't closely follow the game and just pick the game up and play when deadline comes, it's no good either. It looks like only Aggie and I are doing some active discussion..

Yes, I blame it on the summer :( But somehow I don't understand why the spirit has gone. We are playing an OCC Emperor Conquest game and we actually have a chance to win it! Greebley will be back shortly though. I hope that he can still play one or two turns.

EDIT: I got it. I have to choose between playing now or Saturday...

My schedule is pretty much tied up and is going to be worse when school starts.

10:30 - 11:00: Roll out of bed
11:00 - 2:00: Various chores and what not
2:00 - 2:30: Check the forums if I have time
2:30 - 6:30: Football practice
6:30 - 7:00: Recover from football
7:00 - 8:00: throw the football with my dad
8:00 - ???: my dad takes control of the computer

Sorry I can't be of much help for the end game, I'll still be following, though.

Regarding the game: I will not finish it before Saturday, but I already can see that I will not be able to raze more than 2 cities in 10 turns. The distances are simply too big. But the panzer army comes in very handy and can basically pillage the whole core by himself (always ending next to a city when the artillery is in range though.

I have rushed 5 bombers so far and I'm thinking about getting an airfield in enemy territory. The bombers can then kill redlined defenses, allowing us to spare as much panzers as possible.

I also saw that pillaging is great, but that I have to keep one railroad to be able to move from the NE of the world to the centre fast once the rubber is pillaged.

I will go max science on advanced flight. It will take 35 turns at -140 gpt, but with 7300 gold at the start of the research that shouldn't be an issue. We need helicopters or paratroopers and have no need for other techs imho.

EDIT: I like to see us have 20 bombers before we try to raze the Maya capital. These bombers will also allow us to quickly overrun the American cities.

EDIT2: I am sure that we will be able to conquer the entire world. But doing it before 2050 AD is another story.

Aggie:

We don't need to worry about pillaging too much (except the capital which we already did). Focus on razing cities. Regarding this:

You should be able to position forces for Vitcos at turn 4, and at turn 5 you should raze that city. That should allow you to advance to Vilcas. At turn 8 you should raze Vilcas. At about turn 11 and 12 we can raze next two cities. Things will speed up with these big culture cities go away.

And indeed we have to leave ourselves railroads to come back and forth. So do not over pillaging.

microbe, you forget one tiny thing (or I am totally mistaken). With Vitcos gone (and it is gone at turn 5) the complete route towards the next city is still in Maya lands. So this means that I need 6 turns to move the artillery into striking distance of Vilcas and I can only strike 1 turn after that. Unless I decide to forget about the artillery and attack with a couple of Panzers and the Panzer army. Leading to big losses. I will see how bombers can help us here.

EDIT: My 2nd city would actually be Quirugi, which we pass on the way to Vilca.

Also: the Panzer army has a lot of movement points, so it would be strange not to use it to pillage.

Quirugi has only expanded once, so we can get to the hill in turn 6, and attack Vilca in turn 8.

But of course you can choose to attack Quiruqi too. The totaly time required doesn't change, just that we get to the rubber slower.

I am almost certain that the city expanded more than once. It only looks this way due to ocean squares NW of it. The city is old but is probably only size 2 because of French bombings. But I haven't got the game at hand, so I am not totally sure.

This plan of attack is the one I like to follow as much as possible. It indeed appears as if one or two tiles NW of Quirugi are sea squares. Revealing that it only expanded once. I will comment more when I am at home. I don't want to make more assumptions without being able to back it.

I checked it and I dare to say that Quirigua already has seen 3 border expansions. Just look at attached picture of 1996 AD. Culture does not include ocean tiles and those mostly fill up the 3rd ring in the NW. But clearly the 4th ring can't be from any other city. As I said, this city is close to former French lands and may probably have been a victim of naval bombings, killing all but one citizen. It only looked relatively young.

Therefore we need 3 extra moves to reach Vilcas. We need to cross Maya culture all the time. All in all it makes the razing of Quirigua important imho. With that city gone we are able to get new troops into the NE peninsula fast.

LOL, I think Microbe might be trying out his 'bad apple' hat a little to soon! :)

homeyg, no problem. I didn't want to pressure you to play fast. I wouldn't have had a problem with a slight delay.

No, no, I mean in the game. I don't feel confident enough to play and not mess something up that could be fatal to the game with the small amount of turns we have left.

homeyg, I hope that you can play a next round then. My turns weren't THAT difficult and the game should get easier in about 20 turns. You already played a great war-turn, so I don't quite see why you would mess up.

The turnlog:

IHT: I decide to keep the choke closed and park 4 MI's there. I also decide to rush a number of bombers (disband worker/rush explorer). And I start to research Advanced flight. We have more than enough money (7300 gold and can afford 135 gpt loss for 35 turns...

IT: The Maya destroyed the French. Two tanks killed by MI's near Berlin. Bomber->bomber. [2-0]

Turn 1 (1997 AD) Troops move to Vitcos and pillage as many tiles as they can. One of these spots is an uranium source.

IT: Two Maya tanks and 1 MI killed near Berlin. Bomber-bomber [5-0]

Turn 2 (1998 AD) Troops move north...

IT: Two MI killed by our SoD in Maya lands. Two tanks approach Berlin. Bomber-bomber [7-0]

Turn 3 (1999 AD) It will take another turn until we are in reach of Vitcos with the Arty. Two tanks near Berlin redlined with bombers and killed with panzers. [9-0]

IT: Tank attacks troops near Berlin and is killed. MI near Berlin. The Maya land a SoD on American soil. Bomber-Bomber [10-0]

Turn 4 (2000 AD) A Maya MI in our territory is killed by bombers. We are ready to attack Vitcos next turn. A city isolated from the rest of the Maya empire. I have to withdraw our line of workers. [11-0]

IT: America immediately settles near the ivory and steals our iron. The Maya send two MI's and 3 tanks to Berlin. Bomber-bomber.

Turn 5 (2001 AD) Near our home we manage to kill 2 MI and 3 tanks without losses.

Vitcos:
-4 MI's are redlined.
-9/13 panzer vs 1/4 MI: 1-1, MI killed
-8/13 panzer vs 1/4 MI: 1-4, MI killed
-5/5 panzer vs 1/4 MI: 1-1, MI killed
-4/5 panzer vs 1/4 MI: 1-2, MI killed and the city is razed for 102 gold. [20-0]

IT: Two MI's infs and a tank near Berlin Bomber-bomber.

Turn 6 (2002 AD) Two MI's are destroyed by bombers and a panzer takes out the tank. [23-0]

IT: One MI and a destroyer approach Berlin. Bomber-bomber.

Turn 7 (2003 AD) Bombers destroy the MI and the destroyer [25-0]

IT: MI tries to attack Berlin. Bomber-bomber.

Turn 8 (2004 AD) MI killed by bombers. Next turn we can attack Quirigua. [26-0]

IT: The Maya send 3 tanks and a MI. Bomber-bomber.

Turn 9 (2005 AD) Bombers and two panzers destoy 3 tanks and a MI.

Quirigua:
-artillery redlines MI and infantry
-5/5 panzer vs 1/3 MI: 1-0, MI killed
-4/5 panzer vs 1/3 inf: 1-0, inf killed and the city is razed.

Without the cultural boundaries of this city we can send a few panzers back home to heal and refresh our troops at the front. [33-0]

IT: Tank enters our territory. Bomber-bomber.

Turn 10 (2006 AD) Artillery redlines the tank and a bomber kills it. I create an airfield in the war zone. [34-0]

IT: 3 tanks and a destroyer near Berlin. Bomber-bomber.

Turn 11 (2007 AD) 3 tanks are redlined by artillery and destroyed by panzers. The destroyer is redlined. Bombers are moved to the new airflied. [37-0]

IT: MI near Berlin, destroyer leaves. Bomber-bomber.

Turn 12 (2008 AD)

Vilcas:
-artillery redlines 4 MI's and gets city to size 7
-bombers kill 3 MI's and get the city to size 6
-5/5 panzer vs 1/4 MI: 1-0, MI killed and Vilcas is razed for 53 gold.

Artillery and bombers kill a MI near Berlin. [42-0]

3 cities in 4 turns is as expected. The next couple of cities should fall faster. I would continue with the plan as drawn out by microbe. We like to pillage the two rubber tiles and clear the NE. Let's wait with the capital until later. It will probably have a lot of defenders and would cost us.
We are 23 turns from advanced flight, needed for helicopters and paratroopers. We need this for Ica.

42 turns to go for 12 Maya cities and atm 15 American cities. America is growing fast, but they still lack Steel and therefore shouldn't have tanks and certainly no MI's when we turn to them. Their military is pathetic. The Maya lack Ecology: no Modern Armor. They have 3 tanks, 44 MI's and a TOW. Not very impressive, as we have 15 panzers, 16 MI, 12 bombers and an army.

Our bombers are now on an airfield NE of Citchen Icha. We can move them to the hill marked by the red arrow. They can than reach the next target(s). Defend it well (3 MI's at least). Blue circles show the razed cities.
