ALC Game #22 Take 2: Arabs/Saladin

Just from the changes mentioned in this thread, it seems to me that Frigates will see a lot more play now. Infantry/Galleons/Frigates is a stack I've used to great effect already (the infantry get much better odds than cannon), and it'll be just as viable under the new patch.

Make Grens/Galleons/Frigates; research Assembly Line; mass upgrade the grens, and attack a short sea trip later. Or just bite the bullet and land before attacking cities.

I was confused that you were so worried about war weariness: in game ending wars like this, I think you are better off jumping into police state, especially when you already have such a big tech lead on your victim, AND you're spiritual. I assume that you built Mt Rushmore asap too...

Also near the end as cities start coming out of revolt, you could switch to caste system and run some artists to get the border pops quicker.

Improved worker threat assessment: will this make it tougher to steal workers? Again, we'll see.

I would imagine that this refers to the fact that the AI will leave workers vulnerable currently to two-move units while at war. Avoiding worker stealing while at peace would keep the AI from improving any tile within 2 of the cultural border if you just park a chariot there, which would lead to a cheap-o exploity way to hinder an AI in the early going.

From a gameplay standpoint, the worker-steal is already balanced - you suffer the diplomatic consequences of declaring war. Stealing workers while at war with two-move units is clearly just broken AI.

Edit for game comment: When pushing for the last bit of domination, why worry about war weariness or research at all? How much did the last tech you finished before the game ended help you? How much did the 1:) from R&R really add?

Why wouldn't you just go 100% [or whatever you can afford] on the culture slider? That zaps weariness mostly, and gets border pops faster in the new cities.

I would hope this means the AI takes things like Woodman II into consideration.

Even though that's not as fun...

Probably because I'm not a numbers person and therefore am never quite sure if the next city captured will be all I need once it comes out of revolt. In fact, when I have assumed that in the past, I've been wrong, and have had to trudge on several more turns to capture additional cities for the win. So when I'm pursuing a domination win I now tend to just keep things humming along as smoothly as I can.

First of all, congrats on another ALC victory.

Second, approval rate seems to have everything to do with happiness in cities, so if you are at war when you win, your approval rate won't be as high because of war weariness.

On the other hand, if you finish up with a peaceful victory, you can up that approval rate by bumping up the cultural slider, combined with some theaters and coliseums. That's what I did in my latest offline game... I was building theaters and coliseums to combat war weariness, combined with the cultural slider, and as I got to the end game, I found I was able to get a high profit by running the science slider at 70 percent and the cultural slider at 20 percent, that I just left the cultural slider up.

Not that I recommend everyone try that... to put this into perspective, I was on a continent with a neighbor who founded three religions, a second who founded a fourth, and I founded two myself (through CoL and Philo). hence I ended up with six holy shrines via conquering my continent.

And as far as the greatest sport in the world, you are all wrong. The greatest sport in the world is... dodge ball.

I always thought approval rating was based on attitude with other leaders

Nah, it's just based on what your own people think of yourself, so happy faces basically... I always sort of cap that so I'm always in the bottom of tier in terms of approval, which is weird since obviously my empire is the one place to be, hehe. Same confusing thing for the life expectancy, which appears to only be related to how much healthiness you have compared to unhealthiness.

Oh, in that case I couldn't care less about my approval rating.

approval is total :)/total:mad: across all cities. if they are the same it is 50% etc.

needless to say it matters just about as much as the invisible unicorn in my garden

Ah. I tend to pursue the other "safety" strategy when going for domination - just keep taking cities until the message pops up that I won.

On the topic of worker stealing, I think that it is actually EASIER to steal workers now. I've managed to steal workers with 1-move axemen in American territory when at war with Lincoln. In that game, I stole 10 workers from him with 5 declarations of war, which was insane. He never protected them nor did he kill my sole C2 axemen who did all the work (and I didn't send any units to capture cities or anything-it was just 1 axemen).

1) Move the scout NE and settle in place

2) We only get two MLB games a week here in the UK (2am, live feed); why did we have to watch giants playing pat-a-cake for a whole week? I did get to see a Boston team, but they didn't have any bats.

3) Cricket? ok, ok.

4) One of the best ALCs ever, Thank you sisiutil.

There was a thread about something similar to this, where the conclusion was "not broken - works as intended" because the poster wasn't at war with the AI when he snuck up on the AI's workers, and repeated declarations of war brings its own significant penalties.

But that (IIRC) didn't include being able to nab Workers when you're already at war with an AI. Could you post some specifics please (preferably in a new thread, not here) thanks.

When is game 23 starting?

So now I await your views on this game. The next ALC will feature me playing as Lincoln... but I'm going to take a break for a few days before starting that one. And I would like to update my long-neglected Princes of the Universe thread before getting distracted by another ALC. So be patient!

And thus ends the fourth most replied to, and fifth most viewed, S&T thread of all time.

Thanks Sisiutil!
