ALC Game #23 Pre-Game Show: Playing as Lincoln

If Sisutil doesn't move up to Immortal in difficulty level, I would at least like to see a role playing challenge element to this challenge:

Lincoln cannot adopt Slavery and must declare WAR on any leader who adopts Slavery

Cheers,

Dai

Actually, what is not often noted about the emancipation proclamation is that it freed slaves ONLY in the rebellious states. A more true-to-life requirement would be that any peace agreement Lincoln brokers must include a civics change to something other than slavery as part of the deal.

Well, maybe except for Tribalism. :p

Furthermore, you must research Railroad as soon as it becomes available, per the will of congress expressed in the Pacific Railway act of 1862, which Lincoln signed into law.

And you must trade for furs ASAP, if you do not already have them, so that you can create those fashionable stovepipe hats. Abe's gotta have his favorite headwear!

Yeah, a role-playing ALC with this peanut gallery would get kinda out-of-hand, huh? :D

I am definitely leaning towards going up to Immortal. I played part of an immortal game last week (off-line, of course) and got my clock cleaned; then I dropped back down to Emperor and totally dominated
You are basically like me. I own Emperor and get owned in Immortal. In my case, this is because I am a builder at heart and Emperor is the last level where it is possible to play builder instead of always planning for the next war. In your case, I think it's because you tend to be a bit sloppy in the basics. You are one helluva good warmonger. :)

Emperor is the last level where it is possible to do things like showcase traits and UBs. The game becomes formulaic at higher levels. I admire folks who can extract every little advantage and win consistently even when the AI starts with two settlers. Rusten and Snaaty have great threads about how to do this. However, I really find this to be boring when I try to do it myself. That's me, I suppose.

This being said, I don't think that the purpose of the ALC is to show how to win against an AI with ridiculous advantages. The purpose of the ALC is to show how to leverage traits. You can't do that on Deity and very rarely on Immortal.

I am with OldSaxon. This game should be played in Immortal because it's Lincoln. Good traits. Come-from-behind UU and UB. But most ALC games should be played on Emperor. The average leader cannot be showcased on higher levels.

I've been toying around with trying to find good "mid-difficulties." I know some people find using WorldBuilder a mortal sin, but I've found it can be a good way to step up a "half" difficulty. Basically, depending on how much less difficult than the full higher setting I want, I give myself a minor advantage from WB right at the start - maybe a free scout, or a worker tech (or perhaps even just the knowledge of where the strategic resources are, so I can settle for them before doing the requisite research). Probably too complicated for an ALC, but for the casual gamer, it can set up a nice medium between clinching the domination win with tanks vs. the AI's longbows, and having your longbows smushed under AI tanks.

:agree: :agree:

Emperor and below give you actual *choices*. Immortal and Deity force you into extreme, all-or-nothing warmonger propositions. I also find this boring. Surely there is another way to increase difficulty (RP restrictions, Always War, No Tech Trading, whatever) while showcasing leader/civ stuff in Emperor.

You must research Drama right away so Lincoln can relax at the theatre every night.

As far as I know, Sisiutil uses WB only to micromanage the actions of the Barbarians... :mischief:

Ouch! Now I know how politicians feel... you have one moment of weakness, and they never let you forget about it.

Actually, you're far more informative and entertaining than most politicians I'm aware of, and that was a cheapshot which I apologize for.

Nah, don't feel bad, I deserve a little ribbing now and then. Or more often, according to my wife...

I freely admit to using WB to delete barb uprisings if they are at a time when there was no way to survive them...as in before a warrior was even built.

My understanding is that the 3.17 patch fixes that, and indeed I haven't encountered that random event yet in the two 3.17 off-line games I've played.

My understanding is that the 3.17 Barbarians are considerate enough to not attack a sitting duck, that is a Civ without the means to put up a good fight, meaning having access to the Barbarians natural counter unit.

They don't check so you actually have those defenses up, though!

So before you hook up that Horse tile, you'd better be prepared to crank out a few Chariots, as before you know it four Barb Axemen could be on your doorstep...
