Update 1 1614
Latin World:
Portugal Noble Revolt! Even as the empire expands abroad, the situation in Portugal has only grown more unstable. While religious problems may be relegated to the colonies, the influx of riches from the colonies is generating a lot of resentment by the noble classes. The increasing size and wealth of the Portuguese merchant class has begun to outclass the wealth of the landowning aristocrats who have long held the most power in Portuguese society. In the northeast section of the country local nobles have done more than simply stew in disgust, and have openly raised arms against the King. Here, the most peripheral of nobles feel as though they have lost any and all sway with the crown and hope to restore it by force, demanding better entitlements and less taxation. Luckily the situation has yet to spread, but other nobles are watching intently to see what happens next.

Surprising Peasant Revolt in Papal State! While the Pope is hoping to return Rome to is wonderful glory as the eye of Christendom, the local peasants have had enough of his insane taxes. The people have revolted against the Pope himself, demanding their current level of taxation by the local nobility to be unsustainable. Local priests and bishops have tried to calm the crowds, but to no avail. The situation has yet to turn violent, but the countryside mobs have armed themselves in preparation for expected bloodshed. Until their demands are met the people will continue to withhold taxes from the Nobles and this Papacys tax collectors. While the income from these poor simpletons is insubstantial to the Church, something must be done to retain the Popes image in the secular world.

Attempted Coup in Tuscany! Ironically a similar situation in Tuscany involves Nobles demanding an increase in taxation. For years Cosimo II has placed a limit on how much taxation can be put on the people, in order to gain their affection. The result has now been an insurrection of a handful of nobles in an attempt to overthrow his rule. While Cosmio was forced to flee his Palace, he successfully rallied the military and crushed the conspirators before they could do much harm. Secure in himself Cosimo refused to reconsider his tax-code which travelers say has only deepened the mistrust of the aristocracy.

The Palatinate Gains Refugees! As a war between Poland and the Bohemian Circle begins, many Germans have decided to get out of the warpath and move to The Palatinate which, while at war with France, seems to be the most secure place to be right now. Most have been forced to become impoverished serfs, while the few with means have been capable of remaining free men. Regardless the influx has greatly impacted the Electorates population.

Magdeburg and Mainz Joins Saxony Circle! As the threat of Poland grows the Catholic Holy Roman principalities of Magdeburg and Mainz have decided to throw their lot with Saxony which leads the Catholic anti-Polish Circle. While the Circle has yet to make any overt moves against Poland, many suspect they are simply hoping the Protestants get pummeled first. The Prince-Elector of Mainz has openly stated the problem of the Bohemian Circle was allying themselves with a weak nation outside the Holy Roman Empire where the Emperor has no influence.
WARS:
Austria Drives Back Catholic Rebels! With the seat of Protestant Hapsburg power in Vienna at threat from a growing army of Catholic rebels, Archduke Matthias called back some forces from Austrian Netherlands, issued a war tax, and began raising an army. In the meantime the Catholic rebels missed their opportunity to quickly capture Vienna, moving only when it was already too late. The Archdukes forces smashed the rebels south of the city, pursuing them back to the rebel stronghold of Klagenfurt. The Catholic rebels have issued a general call for help to almost anyone imaginable including the Holy Roman Emperor, the kings of Poland, France, and Spain, and even the Pope himself. With other issues developing in Germany, France, and Britain the almost peaceful Reformation could turn violent very quickly.

England Invades Scotland! His Majesty, James I by the Grace of God, King of England, France and Ireland, Defender of the Faith, etc. has decided to add King of Scots to his title deciding the similarly named James over the border in Scotland was simply a charlatan stealing his name and title. While initially succeeding in overrunning several border forts, and besieging Edinburgh, James VI of Scotland has rallied his nation to the north pledging to stop the Catholic James of England from destroying free Scottish Calvinism. Several skirmishes have stopped English advances into the Scottish Highlands while most effort is being made in capturing Edinburgh. The citys forts have slowly been peeled away by British artillery, and its sea-connections severed, but the population is determined to hold on until James VI rescues them from English Catholic tyranny. To the south of the border James VI rhetoric has begun to stir Englands own Calvinist community mostly located in East Anglia and Wales. They have begun to demand the King sign a decree ensuring the future just treatment of Scottish and English Calvinism. At the same time James VI of Scotland has sent letters to the King of France asking him to honor the alliance made between the two countries.

Poland Invasion of Hungary Spreads War! In attempt to finish the job started over 20 years ago, Poland launched a massive invasion of the remains of the Hungarian kingdom. Still reeling from their upset less than a decade ago, King Gabor Bethlen mounted a meager resistance for once such vast a kingdom. Outnumbered over 30-1 the King hoped that his allies in the Holy Roman Empire would be able to save his crown. He successfully fled to Bohemia where he was able to garner support to make war against the Polish invaders. Without wasting time, preparations for such an occasion having been made long in the past, the principalities encompassing the Bohemian Circle gathered their forces and tried to gain the initiative against Poland. While still outnumbered, Poland has mainly focused on destroying Bohemia, having captured most of Moravia. This has allowed a coalition of forces led by Hesse to occupy several German towns. A much larger upset was to the north where Gelre successfully captured the major commercial center of Bremen. Polish forces have arrived, and have begun cannonading Gelre defensive positions, but the city remains in their hands. In the Polish vassal of Thuringia has begun to destabilize as two camps of nobles have formed demanding to stay with, or break from the Polish crown. Prince-Elector Johann Friedrich IIs indecisiveness has only exacerbated the situation.

Breton Pirates Raid Normandy; France Invades Brittany! The English Channel, long known to be a hotbed of Pirate activity, has seen a daring attack on a French naval base in Normandy. The French have linked the privateers to bases out of Brittany and have decided to end the menace once and for all. The invasion of Brittany was launched, quick maneuvers overrunning the border and surrounding the capital of Nantes. Breton military forces have yet to meet the French in the open field of battle, deciding to instead focus on defending key fortresses located across the peninsula designed for just such an occasion. Nantes itself is well defended, as is the cities of Rennes and Brest [now on the map]. The news has spread to the colonies where the French have taken the initiative in invading Bresil. Several naval engagements outside of Nantes has allowed the city to keep supplies coming in from the sea, while small expeditions to the Caribbean have also interdicted some French shipping. Brittanys allies of Lorraine and The Palatinate have responded to the invasion by sending military forces in eastern France. Here they have already met the French on the battlefield and failed to defeat French forces in open battle. With the Austrians preoccupied with their Catholic insurrection, its possible Brittanys allies will be unable to save it. Yet as French forces march farther into Breton land, the Huguenots and other French Protestants have begun to speak up against the crown. Printing presses from Avignon have begun to spread literature around the Protestant regions of southern France demanding an uprising against Louis XIII and end his Papist tyranny.

French Colonial Expeditions! Even as war begins at home and abroad, France has sunk money into expanding its Colonial empire. In the Americas France has decided to expand their Caribbean colony to the Mosquito Coast, possibly threatening English and Spanish positions in the region. In Africa the French have had their most profitable pursuit in completing the take over of the Guinea region, mostly through native alliances. The monopoly on the region has allowed France to openly compete with Portugals Benin colony in the lucrative slave trade. In another attempt to possibly compete with Portuguese trade the French have established outposts in Madagascar which now puts them in range of large-scale trade with the East Indies.

Portuguese Colonial Expeditions! Portugal has also sought to expand its colonial reaches, though mostly in the Pacific. Sailing north from Chile Portuguese forces placed forts in southern California. From here explorers sailed west where they discovered the island chain of Hawaii. The Portuguese have established trading posts and maps across Europe have them as owners of the islands, though the natives would probably disagree. More important to the expansion of the Portuguese Colonial Empire has been the establishment of trade with Vijayanagar. The conclusion of a trade deal has been the first major commercial breakthrough in India by Europeans. Portugal has established a near monopoly on goods from the East Indies.

Eastern World:
Polotsk and Kazan Become Vassals! Russia has created two new vassals by flexing its diplomatic muscles. The first, Kazan, actually resulted in the state becoming a vassal of the Ottoman Empire rather than become subservient to the Tsar. The second, Polotsk had no hope of resisting a Russian invasion and chose the path of least resistance. However, recent events in Russia may allow Polotsk and Lithuania to break free of Russian control.
Increased Trade in Poland! Poland has signed a historic deal with Russia opening the borders for increased trade and travel. The result has been the opening of new markets for Polish goods. In addition, the unrest in Russia has forced many Russian merchants to forsake their homeland for the safety of Poland which had luckily just become open to them. The result has been a boom of economic activity in Polands east even as the commercial situation in the west depreciates.

Major Uprising in Russia! The sudden death of Mikhail Romanov, combined with the already tenuous situation in Russian society has erupted into full blown rebellion. Peasants from across the countryside have decided to throw off their lords whose taxes they feel are too high. While most revolts have been put down, the support of local lords have allowed the revolt south of Smolensk to grow to uncontrollable levels. While the revolt is peasant in nature, the unstable situation may spread to religious and nationalist discontent further in former Lithuania.
(+Peasant Revolt)
WARS:

The remaining Russian forces have retreated to the north of Norway where supplies are scarce. The mercenaries have already begun rumbling on leaving the army as defeats and likelihood of losing future payments is high. With the situation growing worse at some advisors tell the Tsar to simply leave Scandinavia once and for all, while others say the blow to Russian prestige could not be tolerated regardless the material loss.

While the Ethiopians are not as well armed or organized as Ottoman forces, they are still capable of defending their homeland.
