Iran should be green on that map.

And the distinction between upper-middle and lower-middle seems really arbitrary. Algeria is classified as upper-middle and Ecuador as lower-middle (GDP per capita $8,033 and $8,008 respectively)

I was more surprised by where they put Vietnam. It doesn't make any sense to me, I thought it was roughly on par with China.

no, actually the poorest part of France is on the same level as the poorest parts of Poland. Take a better look.

(for people who don't see it, France is significantly larger than just its continental territory)

I notice the Czech Republic is rather poor outside Prague.

The capitals are troublesome. Many companies operating in the regions have their HQs in the capital cities, and if this isn't taken into account, it can skew the statistics. It is certainly true for Slovakia (Bratislava really ISN'T so rich as the map suggests...)

It is based on GNI not GDP, and is from 2006.

My bad - i was comparing poland with parts of europe. I forgot it feels at home among south america and african countries (especially those in north africa).

I don't remember Mazovia being that big. Did they combine two or three provinces or something?

Plus parts of rural Mazovia is pretty poor..

Why ain't the baltics split up? They should be red except for their capitals.

Wow, in Romania Bucharest is 2 levels higher than any other region. That's not healthy for the economy. I propose we move the capital to Brasov, and rebuild the old Bucharest so that it will get tourist money instead of the inherent privileges it gets as a capital. :D

We used to have 49 voivodships - about 10 years ago (and maybe even more than 10 years ago) that number was reduced to 16 to make everything more efficient.

That's why our provinces look so poor. It is the rural areas bringing all the urban areas down big time.

And I just checked, and Mazovia is actually that big. Looks strange to me...
