Alternate Timeline Building Experiment, v1.0

Wow, thanks for the input! OK, I'm starting on the next era, probably posted in an hour or two. I might be able to catch any new posts but no guarantees!

No! Horse back came first to the Normalic fighters. Read the book 'Soul of the Sword' an adult section book. It tells it all!

Hmm, everything I've read has pointed to the first horse domestication in the steppe, around modern-day Kazakhstan. First for chariots in both the middle east and the far east, and later people found that they could train horses to carry a human rider. Also that horses were also bred to be bigger and stronger over time, the first were maybe the size of ponies and not great for riding into battle on.

Daft this is why you never finish updates. Several sentences turns into a full update.

True true, very true :( I fell into the usual trap. Lets see if I can actually avoid it this time.

Heck, first horses are the size of ponies just for use that they need low maintainance.. Great for normand cavarly striks.

Chariots are for feet-lubbers who didn't learn horse-rider by the forcing it upon them just to survive, The Shang used chariots because they tried to minic the raiders. But the raiders horse back as a nessssity.

Can I have a realistic idea of when the update is going to be? I presume it'll be a bit more then two hours or so before it's ready?

Era 2: The Birth of Civilization

(map: click for big version)

As farming became more of an obsession for some cultures, towns were able to grow much larger, until the first cities appeared. Living together in such numbers was something new for the human race - some might say, unnatural and unhealthy. It led to new possibilities, and new problems. Strange new behaviours and societies came into being.

It is believed the largest cities were in Ummite and Agrian lands, where knowledge of farming and irrigation had reached a higher level than elsewhere. While the Ummites were still spared from foreign invasion, the Agrians overthrew the Kramto-Agrian nobles. Both they and the Ummites were able to form their own centralised states with growing populations. Meanwhile the weakened Kramtob were scattered by the strong Khaldi tribes (part of a chaotic series of migrations going on across asia at the time), who spread out from the Zagros mountains, and devastated the upper Indus in particular. Early bronze axe-heads (similar to those found in Bohemoi burial sites) may have played a role in the success of the Khaldi. Central India was home to a new hybrid culture of Agrian and Kramtob influences.

The Greater Pargian kingdom was a result of political developments and a tendency of the Pargians to unite under more powerful leaders - the actual population of the Nile was somewhat lower than the Indus or Euphrates. In theory, the ancient Pagrian Kingdom ruled over the neighbouring lands of Hekoi and Chakes (the people of Chakes were not of Pargian descent, but were more closely related to the Ummite culture). However, in practice, the Pargian Kingdom had control of only a few cities and towns along the upper Nile. Still it was the largest single state to exist at this time, and ancient Ummite texts speak of its greatness. The legendary ruler Mensar I is mentioned many times.

Sheshegi nomads were instrumental in bringing horses into the middle-east, which soon found a use alongside oxen as a beast of burden, and their speed was especially useful for the war chariots that were becoming common. The Kurzen peoples were probably the first to domesticate the horse, which helped them spread into europe, pushing other cultures like the Bohemoi further west.

In Eastern Asia, the Yueren culture may have reached similar, perhaps greater heights, if not for the nomadic Hsin, whose warriors introduced the strong composite bow to the far east. Legends speak of many great battles and the destruction of a great coastal city called Shandong. The Yueren regrouped at the city of Henan, which became a strong city-state itself. The mystical figure Jianyu became the first great religious leader (if he ever existed), forging the early earth-worship mysticism of the Yueren into a more complex system which was steadily expanded upon in later centuries. Yueren influence certainly spread far to the west and south - Tianshi burial pits from this often contain Yueren symbols and similar artefacts. The Tianshi remained warlike and divided at this time, with less settlement and agriculture than in the north. The ancient site of Xiqu, originally thought to be an ancient capitol, is now thought to be a kind of sanctuary and ceremonial center.

What the Talikanan culture of central America may have accomplished, will never be known. After fighting the Oltaxl tribes for some time, Talikanan was seemingly destroyed by newcomers from the north-west, the warlike Oltu peoples. The coastal Oltaxl peoples inherited much of the pictographs and mysticism of Talikanan, and perhaps even spread their ideas to the central Carribean, as evidenced by ancient rock carvings there.

Its now around 2750 BC.

Note that there are some mixed cultures which are under the dual authority of two people, who may well give them conflicting instructions, with unusual results.

It can be assumed that there are tribes all over the place. They will get names on the map as and when they become relevant.

Notes:
@Luckymoose, argh, I just can't :blush:

@All, I apologise if it seems I've blatantly ignored people's input. I haven't really, I have it all saved and will refer to it in future, especially the city names and such. If I try to give feedback about everything, this becomes a normal NES and updates alot slower.

Next Era:
Era 3 will be the First Empires, and the first peak of literacy and culture. There may be smallish empires, like old Egypt, Babylon, etc. Or maybe even bigger. Or maybe even smaller, but better-organised states. Nomadic peoples will still be powerful and lurking on the borders, they could travel far, and could be the destroyers of some states. Use of horses, chariots, and bronze weapons will be spreading, armies will be getting bigger. This would also be a great time to build huge monuments which will amaze people for centuries to come, even relative 'barbarians' could build some great wonders. So, lots of conflicting demands and no way to satisfy all of them.

I intend to post Era #3 tomorrow, around the time I posted this post today.

Reminder: Please feel free to give any kind of input you want, but a simple list of priorities would be good. Names of great cities and leaders could also be useful, though may not actually appear in the updates for some time. I will accept PM's if need be, otherwise you can just post in the thread. It would be helpful if you could take a second to boldify the name of your tribe/chiefdom/people, so I know what you are talking about, and can easily find that post again...

New Cultures:
These are still accepted at this time, please refer to the template on earlier pages. NPC's on the map can also be claimed.

@ Daft: These updates are perfectly sized and this NES is going to be awesome as it progresses.

Nation Names: Jakivat Kingdom, Issec, Jornmarin, Kajivati
Priorities: The Agrian peoples will begin moving into central India to find more farmlands and to hopefully escape some of the dangers in the river valley. Those who remain in the Indus valley will form a stronger state, though not very strong militarily, named the Jakivat Kingom. With excess food they will begin thinking, building and even perhaps forming a written language.

Kramtob Tribe Priorities: Some will stay in the mountains, becoming more settled and isolated in their isolated villages. However, the mojority will move either south or east along rivers and doing the average Kramtob thing, attacking and enslaving. This should often result in many hybrid cultures after the Kramtob tribes become merged with those they attack.

The far western Krabtob will expand along the Caspian Sea slowly melting in with the local cultures.

Kramto-Agrian Chiefdom Priorities: Become less violent and start to settle down near rivers and begin farming more. However, retain some of the strong military tradition of the Kramtob.

Is it okay is I have two sets of priorities?

Also:

Person Names: Kavalo Bosob. He brought his local tribe up to the mountains to meditate and seek the true meaning of life. The temples he founded are very isolated and are considered mostly to be a myth by some cultures.

Country Names: Silik, Arkob, Kragia, Shyin

Culture name: Mavan
Staring point: Malta/Sicily
Description: Seafarers that worry only about their own people. Fiercely territorial.
Priorities: Building their claim of the area and improving boat building techniques

@human-slaughter, greetings!

Ninja Dude said:

Yes that is the idea, you can give seperate input for anything with your name next to it in the list.

The Whashagon tribes are going to try to domesticate elk (hey, you can domesticate a cow, how much different is that to an elk? and i assume dogs are domesticated?) and start ranching/using them for beasts of burden (not large scale ranching, few elk per family or so) and establish the city of Whaglogan near present-day Oregon City, Oregon.

Zul have slowly been expanding on Madagascar, peacefully annexing any minor tribes in their way. However, a large number of people migrate to the two islands closest to Africa, hereby named Sholom (North) and Tuili (South) Some adventurous folk have been moving into an even larger island to the west. (The Zul do not know its true size) For now, the Zul still hunt, though their villages are becoming larger and larger and farming has just been introduced.

@Daft: Keep the updates coming; don't get discouraged. This looks to be really really awesome by the time it hits the modern age, or even before then.

EDIT: Changed later. Can ignore.

Priority 1: A very egostical king will emerge in Pargia, creating a cult of hero worship around him, monuments to himself, and so on, that makes him revered as the highest god by future Pargian generations...
Priority 2: Tactical doctrines will be improved to make for superior army commanders down to the level of officers

Culture name: Sarvonia
Staring point: Upper Dniepr River, south of Amestris
Description: Animist tribes who have, through technological osmosis from their neighbours, risen to a point where they can have some degree of order.
Priorities: Conquest, Expansion, Wealth.

Adopting the Horse from their Kurzen neighbours, the Sarvonian tribes have begun to travel from their homelands, raiding and pillaging the lands of their neighbours, often migrating into them.

Changing Priorities.

Pargia
Priority 1: A very egostical king will emerge in Pargia, creating a cult of hero worship around him, monuments to himself, and so on, that makes him revered as the highest god by future Pargian generations...
Priority 2: The creation of a standing navy, able to operate in the Meditteranian and the Nile.

Adding Hekroi priorities. (NOTE: Only applies if we get to set two seperate sets of priorities)

Hekroi Chiefdoms
(NOTE: The two Hekroi priorities are equal in priority)

A: The creation of a tradition of studying history, with to the greatest extent possible high levels of skills at actually determining and recording the truth
B: The creation of a Great Library, mainly for recording the various Hekroi historian's histories

Awesome updates thus far Daftpanzer.

The Yueren Tribes and the Ascension of Druids

The Yueren peoples, outcasted from violence up and down the river that had destroyed Shandong, were quick to regroup into small villages and tribes. These were further north than the emerging Henan Kingdom, which is said to actually have been ruled by Shoushan, and persevered because of his quick action to protect the city amidst violence around the port city of Shandong. Small militias appeared in these smaller tribes, many of which remained nomadic amidst attacks from the violent and malevolent Hsin. Eventually, groups of these nomadic tribes began to group together to defend common lands.

The Henan Kingdom's priorities are to unify the areas where Shandong previously stood, and bring all of the Yueren Tribes (or most of them, at least) into a unified state. This is to be done using primarily cultural and diplomatic means. The Henan Kingdom is to attempt to convince these tribes of the need for a unified kingdom amidst the threats that had destroyed Shandong. King Weizhe "Great Sage" of the Henan Kingdom, who is said to be a distant relative of Jianyu and current king of the Henan, is to use his skilled practices of diplomatic contact and druidic religious customs to sway these tribes. The people that live in the Henan Kingdom are, after-all, relatives to these tribes and these tribes require protection. The entire region practices the same druidic Yueren religion, with maybe some unique regional variants that are welcomed in all druidic circles.

A continued emphasis is to be placed on culture, language, writing, and agriculture, but the Henan Kingdom is to also continue the practices established by Shoushan, in that maintaining defensive walls and militias were of utmost importance to the survival of the Yueren peoples and protection of the Earth that so graciously allowed the rise of Yueren civilization.

King Weizhe (perhaps the next name for it could become the Weizhe Empire or something?) is to attempt to create an empire of these tribes and of the Henan (the city of Henan would be the central city and the largest city within this empire). He desires to use the culture that has spread far and wide, and combine it with the druidic military customs that Shoushan had established long ago. These practices provide a strong morale in troops because of their desire to protect the land. This will give them courage and a religious and cultural reason to defend a growing empire. Moving down the river is necessary, along with attempting to gather some of the northern and southern villages into the Henan, villages which are of Yueren decent and who practice very similar customs. Realizing the importance of recent weapons is of importance, as is the manufacture of paper using pulps from various types of organic materials. The presence of beautiful paper and the binding of books and an advanced Yueren language and writing system is to be one such outlet to assimilate surrounding tribes through a steady pervasive cultural presence initiated by the Henan Kingdom. These materials will create more efficient tools for diplomacy and communication between other empires. Henan is not an aggressive empire, but they are extremely efficient defenders. They are concerned with feeding and defending their people rather than attacking other civilizations.

Their priority, thus, when it comes to military matters is not to necessarily expand militarily (culturally, religiously are more effective ways for them to expand), but to create an extremely effective defensive network throughout the kingdom and the surrounding areas and tribes that will successfully repel attacks and establish solid borders and walls in which the Henan Kingdom and future empire can grow and be secure within. They want extremely skilled defenders moreso than ruthless attackers.

The druidic arts and religious practices are to be justification for any ruler of as king of the Henan. It is the concept that whoever is king has been chosen by the Earth to rule the kingdom that protects the land. He always has a council of druids, a council that has remained over hundreds of years thus far, and has, as empires begin to rise, contributed to a somewhat organized sense of political climate. These are basically advisers to the "king", who is essentially a head druid in practice.

Finally, if the tribes from up the river become more and more assimilated into a new empire, the old port city of Shandong is to be reconstructed and made even better than it was at its previous peak. And, of course, like other areas within this empire, it is to be defended by skilled defenders who are valiant and determined to protect the rightful Earth's people from any harm.

Are we allowed to do stories? This isn't technically supposed to be a NES, after all.

Are we allowed to do stories? This isn't technically supposed to be a NES, after all.

That wasn't a story. It was a list of priorities in paragraph form and reiterations of information Daftpanzer has already posted in updates. He encouraged pointing out people, places, and other tidbits that might be important.
