Anyone name their units?

I've seen AI naming one of its units. I saw once that Willem Oranje had named one of his swordsman to 'Swordsman hero'.

This unit is renamed because of a quest, and the name comes automatic. So I don't think AI really does that...

I almost never name my units. Occasionally, I will name an elephant with Medic "Doctor Stampy" but that's about as far as it goes.

Elephants that get 10 experience points get named Jumbo, Dumbo, Babar, Celeste, Ganesha, then I get creative.

I usually stacks that I plan to keep together of 10-15 units

1st Army
2nd Army
3rd Army

And then unit (according to unit type) in the group gets named

1st Army Infantry Division
1st Army Artillery Division
1st Army Cavalry Division
1st Army Armor Division

I basically just copy and paste for each infantry/artillery/cavalry/armor unit.

Other than being slightly pleasing to the eye, it's cool to see how many of the original units of an army group survives after a a long war.

I rename all my ships, such as HMAS Sydney, HMAS Perth, HMAS Melbourne for the Battleships and use towns for the Destroyers. Carriers i use HMAS Australia, ect ect. Missile Crusiers i start with the states of Australia.

For other units i only name the ones i attach generals to, for horse's i use, 10th Light Horse, 11th Light Horse ect

I think my next game I'll be naming all my units with Transformers themes.

Now I just need to decide... autobot or decepticon...

I do, quite often at that.
Mainly elephants though, dunno why.
maybe because i find them utterly cool.

The infamous "Medophant" healing my troops while "Graf Stampfi I" leads the charge is a sight to behold.

Also, i might change city names, according to their primary role.
That one with 2 gold, iron silver and copper was named "Moria", while the one with 3x Iron was "karak Azul".

I laughed my @#$ off about these names. Tasteless, yes. Damn funny as well.

I can't wait to read this later. Thanks for the laughs.

Oh, and I sometimes name my units. They tend to be boring, historically or thematically relevant ones, like HMS Victory for an experienced British Ship-of-the-Line.

Not too many laughs there...:)

Mostly I name ships. Sometimes I get silly, rather than vulgar.

I start with a famous historical ship name, such as HMS Invincible.

Eventually my theme takes a tangent... Intractible, Incalculable, Insatiable, Inelligible, Ineffible, Ineffecient , Insuffrable, Intollerable, Insensitive, Indivisible, WithJusticeForAll...

Frigates would typically be named for the American Heavy frigates
USS Philadelphia, USS President
USS Constitution...Constelation. tangent-..Confiscation..Consolation...Constipation

Battleships and Missile subs would be named after US states, but they can take a tangent into states of mind or condition...Phsycotic , Neurotic , Confusion, Intoxication, Innebreation.

Legions just get numbered I, II, III, IV etc.

Almost sounds like the Name-the-Sith-Lord game, where you come up with sith lords by dropping the "in-" prefix. Darth Vader. Darth Sidious. Darth Tractible. etc. :)

 First I've heard of it. If I ever venture into the future scenarios, I'll know what to name my intergalactic Battlecruisers...

The Royal Navy had some unlikely names in that line- HMS Inflexible, and HMS Inconstant, for example, so it's not hard to come up with something equally plausible in the same vein.

Well if my unit has a GG and it is a medic, (usually Cavalry, so it becomes a Gunship) I call it "Medevac Blackhawk" even though the image clearly shows an Apache!

I thought it was a Cobra (AH-1)

Back to the topic:
I allways name ships, I have a list of names for my ships depending on their class.

I'm starting to name ground units as well, but I have no "convention naming" for ground units.

And as for air units I usually call them:

1st DeepSea Recon Wing
...
7th Fighter Wing

and so on.

The funniest is naming cities and units in multiplayer.I like to name a great general warlord.. Good game cya, or if i dont have a warlord then just a random unit from the stack.

i love it!

i name them all the time. pre-BtS, when i didn't have so much city visibility, if i founded a late religion and wasn't going to use the free missionary, i used it as a "spy" to scout out territory. they had two movement and didn't cost me any hammers, it's a way to get some use out of 'em. i am forgetful if i'm doing many things at once, which i always am in civ, so i'd name these religious spies things such as "I AM A SPY" (yes in all caps) or "DO NOT USE ME" as a helpful reminder. even tho the other civs had writing and alphabet, they never did seem to mind the presence of I AM A SPY in their borders.

most of my units tho i just name for their promotions, so that i don't have to try to interpret the symbols which i can never remember. i also can't remember which official name means what, so i use my own personal system. like, i usually have axemen running around named "C2 Archer". that means they have Combat2 and Cover. but all cover-promoted units are named Archer to remind me that they are best at fighting archers. luckily they can't read their own names so they don't actually think that they're archers.

my medic1s are always named Nurse and medic2s are named Doctor. medic3s i name something goofy unless the GG has a really spiffy name, which a lot of them do. if i get one with a fantastic name, but i already have my medic3(s) and i'm gonna make an academy or settle him, i sometimes change my medic3 to have the new one's name instead. i mean come on, the name Cao Cao is just freaking awesome! he also wins the prize for the wikipedia entry with by far the most (??)s in it that i've ever seen. mystery man, maybe he should be a great spy too...

I often name my units, especially the first warrior (I try to keep him alive, and I'm always sad when he dies), or units that accomplished something special in the game (holding a city against overwhelming odds, or winning a fight when I actually intended to suicide the unite to soften up the defenders). However ...

I started naming some of my main Privateers in a multi game. One was "Ballsack" the "Vagina". I thought it was funny watching a message that my Vagina has taken out an enemy caravel.

Honestly, if your subconscious makes you choose sexual body parts as unit names, then it's probably its way of subtly telling you that it wants you to quit Civ for a while, get up from the computer, and actually get laid.

I name most of my ships in the late game, which is usually easiest with America, but I also do it with any other nation's ships. I also name all my Praets in the order they were created(i.e. 1st Legion, 2nd Legion, etc.)
I really have to try out your idea, Underdawg.

Hey that what I do ... usually before I attack a CIV, I'll spend 10 minutes naming all the units that I'm gonna attack with.

So I'll have names like:

1st Army - I Inf Div
1st Army - II Inf Div (Melee or Archery)
1st Army - I Cav Div (Horse)
1st Army - I Art Div (Catapults)

I also name my first couple warrior/scout to be "Recon I, Recon II"

It's great to see how many units actually survive; at some point when they get real buff with XP and specialized, I'll rename them "City Killers", "Commandos", "Insurgents" etc..
