Anyone still playing Medieval II?

i had to reinstall all my games, so i have started back on Medievall II (while i wait for FotS to come out). playing with retrofit mod. lot of fun playing as venice. about 125 turns far and im kicking the mongols out of the holy land

I just reinstalled Medieval 2 (20 minutes) and the Kingdom's expansion (20 minutes patching, another 20-30 minutes of installing the four campaigns which I probably don't need) and Stainless Steel 6.4 (another hour of downloading and installing) last night. At least the load times are quick, although because of the mods the AI's turns take a while :p

I approve of your time consuming yet eventually rewarding decision!

I haven't played it in a while due to Mount & Blade. I used to play it in a modified version of a mod that no longer exists (Retrofit 1.5), as well as Broken Crescent, and I loved it, but I couldn't stand the AI and the ridiculous diaper-wearing purple Byzantines. I might try SS sometime, but I don't like too many changes.

SS didn't make enough changes, honestly.

Meh, I thought they were fine enough, then again, I don't really expect all that much out of TW games or their mods (EB excepted, of course).

Das Heilige Römische Reich was really buggy, but it was probably the most interesting mod for the game. Broken Crescent was fun too.

Quick question for you guys: what do you like to do with your king? Do you use him mainly as a general or as a governor?

You'd think the king should sit safely in the capital, but with all those command stars and the high dread/chivalry rating, making him a commander in the field is pretty tempting. I've been experimenting with this of late and as long as you keep him out of harms way, it seems pretty effective.

I like to play my king/prince to his strengths/traits. If he is chivalrous, govern a good city and only attack rebels/enemies with even odds...if he is dreadful, he visits a neighbor with an army and assassins to sack/execute some settlements.

I agree with a previous post that the solo campaign gets monotonous without some sort of role playing in your head. Managing the bloodline can be a good way to keep it interesting I've found.

I just reinstalled Medieval 2, what mods would you recommend?

Think Im going to play Third Age Mod (MiddleEarth) and so again after some long time again Medieval 2 Kingdoms
Have played some a bit long time ago Eras Mod with the whole world map and bringing Korea to world conqueror

True story. I am pleased with the map, but I would have preferred if they went with a more EB style of traits and ancillaries, buildings, and triggered events. As of 6.4 there are a few of these: there are scripted peasant revolts in several provinces around Bulgaria around 1150, for example. Byzantine generals can gain offices of taxiarches, droungarios, and others. But the buildings are incredibly boring, and the units reek too much of "flavor" and don't offer enough dynamics. The Area of Recruitment that was implemented leaves much to be desired, but is still much better than Vanilla.

Overall, SS is much better than Vanilla, but leaves much to be desired.

Hotseat campaigns in M2TW are pretty fun. If you play with all factions controlled by humans, you wait many days for your turn but it doesn't matter. It is still more chalenging than playing against AI. One shortcoming is that you can't actually fight battles against other players. When you attack an army of another faction which is human-controlled, AI controls this guys' army on the battlefield. That's why usually people play with "all battles auto-resolved" in Hotseat campaigns. I wonder if there is some way to play these battles against another player (of course in such case you would have to wait until this player is also online).

There is that battle editor tool - so it is possible to create a battle which is a mirror image of the battle which is going to take place in your Hotseat campaign, using this tool. And then play it against another player using Game Spy Arcade. But then you have to represent the result of this battle, in the actual campaign (on the campaign map). And here there are much more problems. There is probably no other way to do this than modifying files of the campaign.

All of this would take too much time and effort so people just set either "all battles auto-resolved" or very hard battle difficulty (but even on very hard battle difficulty playing battles against AI-controlled armies is ridiculously easy in this game, except maybe of siege battles).

I think CA should create a patch which would allow to play human vs human battles in a Hotseat campaign.

Having changed to Windows 7 64-bit a while ago, I've found that the original M2TW works fine but the Kingdoms expansion (I have the Gold Edition) doesn't - has anyone else encountered this, or does anybody know how to fix it?

What happens when you try to launch Kingdoms? What kind of error is it giving you?
