I enjoyed Tropico 2: Pirates Cove (yes I know, not Atari, but a pirate like game none the less) and would love to try out a demo before purchasing the game.

Well since no one wants to tell me what Pirates! is (or compliment me on my avatar! lol) i guess i'll have to request a demo too.

Same.

I wont think about it til that happens either :p (I got disappointed with the delay of Half Life 2 so I dont want that happening again)

Heill, Jeff Foley. I must say, the fact that Sid Meier is returning
to the classic Pirates! game is something that makes me very happy indeed.

For those of us who are about 25 to 35 years old, and who
owned the old Commodore computers, the game Pirates! is
something that induces nostalgic memories of hours of
enjoyment. I remember more than once when my Commodore
64c computer would completely freeze up because I had
been playing Pirates! for so long, the power supply for the
computer overheated...but I digress. :)

Truly, if you have any contact with Sid himself, please tell
him that older folk who enjoyed Pirates! the first time around,
and also enjoyed the original IBM version, are eagerly awaiting
his work in bringing it to us again. For some of us, Pirates! was
our first taste of the great fun that Sid brings to strategy
gamers, and we have been devoted to his creations since
then.

My first-ever PC CD Rom was a Sid-Meier classics disc, which included Pirates, but it kept crashing, so I've never had chance to give it a good go.

I thought it was ok, but would have preferred to have seen a revamp of Colonization. Now that was a game I loved almost as much as Civ!!

Well I played the old Pirates! on the C64 and Amiga. It was great. So unless you seriously f*cked it up and made a crappy new game I'll probably buy it and play it.

For those just posting they don't know what Pirates is/was I give you THIS!

Before you start complaing that the graphics sucks and so on try and keep in mind that this was 1987. At the time of its release that game ROCKED!

To add an example of what I don't want to see. I don't want the game in anyway what so ever to have anything in common with Bethsoft's SeaDogs cause that game was utterly horrible.

I'd played Pirates in its earliest days ... :D
And therefore i'm so anxious to get and try the next edition.

I'd really loved this game, that's why i was so lucky when i heard a couple of month ago, that there will come up a new one, sometime!

:goodjob:

I would be lying if I said "never heard of it", because I know it's an other Firaxis game, but that's about all I know about it.

The original Pirates was one of the best games ever made so you have a lot of expectations to live up to now, and you better not screw it up ;)

I've loved pirates from its beginnings on a Commadore 64,
looking forward to playing it again, Haven't played it since my old floppeis got infected with the Tequila Virus way back when.

I have never Played the game, But if Sid is involved I will probably check it out. I would like to see a demo first. I have played most of the games he is involved with. I would have to say that Civilization is my favorite and I dont really have much time for any others. To play it would have I would have to give up some of my Civ3 time.

I played Pirates! Gold way back when and thought it was a fun game. Having played some of the newer games with better graphics and features, like Port Royale, I'd have to hope for the following things before buying the game in an "updated version":

1. Comparible graphics with newer games like Age of Mythology. The water in that game, with the waves crashing and the different depths, is amazing! It would be great to see the coral reef's you sailed over and look at the mast of sunken ships in the clear waters of the Carribean.

2. A fleshed out RP aspect, like Pirates of the Caribbean, where you could actual boost your avatar as he/she progressed so they became more feared/respected through-out the Caribbean. This would make some places offer you special deals and discounts/more expensive goods than normal.

3. A BEEFED UP trade aspect, like Port Royale, where you could also make money off selling your ill-gotten gain. Think Port Royale with the ability to manage land plantations (slightly like Colonization) and production centers to make goods to sell as well as steal.

4. Include the various shot, ship defense, crew strength, possibilit of mutinies, etc, that Port Royale and Tropico 2 had. The original game was fun but got boring after a while when all you did was sail around blowing up ships. There should be more to the game than just that.

As I said the original was a lot of fun, but once I got tired of raiding ships, the game was essentially over since there was veryl ittle left to do and Pirates and Privateer's did much more than that historically.

EDIT: For what it's worth, I voted that I like Civ3 and would probably buy Pirates! 2, but depending on how well the above conditions were met would largely depend on when I bought the game. Having a 50/50 track record with games Atari has produced in the past 18 months that have not been patched or were lower quality than promised, I now wait until after the first few weeks to purchase. How long after that ($20 bargin bin anyone?) time I buy depends on the above as mentioned.

I have to say that I think the poll is a bit skewed, because more people who like Pirates will bother to vote than people who ahev never heard of it. I'll sure buy it, though - if there's a Mac version...

I don't want the game in anyway what so ever to have anything in common with Bethsoft's SeaDogs cause that game was utterly horrible.
Huh? The SeaDogs sea battles were the greatest, and I would hope that Pirates II would try to emulate that part of it.

Celebrity i can understand but y on earth would anyone wanna put their missus in the game? One of the main reasons im still playing puter games is to get away from the witch the last i would wanna do is bump into her!!

LOL - seems your longtime married ;)

I actually have a clear memory of playing the game. Maybe it's because it was one of the first computer games I ever played. I still remember that I thought the fencing wasn't as good as in Prince of Persia, (which was another favorite of the time). The navigating was great and gave a good feeling. I'm a fan. I must say that all pirategames since have been disapointing. Even though pirates of the Carribean got pretty close. To bad it ws rushed out on the market before they were finnished filling the towns with things to keep them alive.
I promise that I'll at least try the demo.

I had never heard of Pirates! until my friend poped Pirates! Gold into his Sega Saturn. What I saw was awesome! I am now a big fan of the game and I am very excited about it coming out again!

Oh and I'm 19 and male.

I too had downloaded a C64 emulator version of the game in order to relive past glories. I could not, unfortunately, get past the lousy start I would always get due to not being able to answer the opening questions about the treasure fleet or silver train. My original copies of the software and the manual have long since passed on. I fully understand that this was a copy protection feature but is it still valid or has such 'ancient' code long since passed into public domain? If it is legal to do so please let me know if this information from the manual is available. I know where to obtain the game itself just not these valuable answers from the manual. If this is an illegal request ignore it and I will eagerly await the latest version of Pirates! before once again visiting The Spainish Main.

I don't know if it's legal or not, but in my understanding, if you did buy the original game and lost it and not sold it, you should be okay. I am not a lawyer, though.

But as a bold and daring Pirate! :) (just kidding, after all you claimed you bought it) just check out Project64. They have the manual, i'm not sure if the dates are included, though.

P.S.: Wow, they even have the map of the Spanish Main. Only seeing this starts Dvorak's "From the new world" in my head, which goes together with this game perfectly. Set sails for Panama!
