They say people are more likley to shoot a family member than an intruder, does that mean handguns are pointless?

Please specify if your answer is no.

Nope. thay are fun. By fun I mean evil, and by eivl I mean they are the demise of all social order. . . of course that comes back to the fun of them. j/k

No they are not pointless imo. Thats all.

I think in a lot of cases the family member is shot intentionally; in that case, in lieu of a handgun knives and baseball bats are available. However, handguns can also be used for sport, like at a range.

Hell No! They protect people. A knife is useless when put up against a criminal (And trust me, theyll get a gun somehow) with a gun. Guns save lives, they kill criminals. We need LESS restrictions on guns even!

Well, for starters, when they say that, they are incorrect.

I think if someone wants to defend themselves they sould be allowed to use a handgun. But people also need to be carefull, and use only reasonable force. Leave justice for the law.

Wow igloo I think you just effectively ended this discussion.

If I have made even one person aware that that long-ago study that alleges "a homeowner's gun was 43 times more likely to kill a family member, friend, or acquaintence, than it was used to kill someone in self-defense" has enough flaws and distortions in it to make Baghdad Bob blush, then I've had a good day.

IglooDude wins the internet. :rotfl:

Oh, and SECONDED!

Which would lead to their conclusions being wrong. . .

Not necessarily. If I have an incorrect premise (the moon is made of cheese) then I can come to a correct conclusion (the moon is far away from earth) by use of normal logic (because otherwise we'd smell the cheese).

Some link-reading is required, evidently. (;))

In the uk very few handguns = very few people shot. You want to defend your property? Why do you need a concealable weapon? Only criminals need to be able to conceal weapons, along with a very few security types etc.

They don't have to be pointless, but most people prefer if they are.

True it's nowhere near as high as 43:1, but looking at the numbers in your link it's still 12:9 unintentional deaths to self defense homicides. Not very conclusive given the small numbers involved, but I'm still less than convinced the guns are actually beneficial.

It is a very important right over here. Any trampling of it wories me, I'll take the negatives it comes with for the overall positive it instills. I have had personal experience with gun tradgedies so I can say I would stick by my opinion.

Of course they are pointless. Forming a viable civilian revolution is silly, when the vaunted handguns run into tanks. :p

Ummm, geurilla warfare?

Well the initial premise is wrong.

Yes Igloo dude has won the internet, Kudos, what do you plan to do now, win the galaxy or maybe try out for the universe, or you could keep it simple and go for Earth, all hail Igloo dude master of the internet. Who shall I kill for you first master ;):)

You could still argue they are pointless though, depends which neck of the woods you live in, I've never even see a gun outside of a shop window, gun crime is on the increase over here but it's still rare, so yes guns are pointless for self defence here, we just had a knife amnesty over here though, and there are truck loads of those on the streets.
