Ask a Brazilian

I usually dont support any sporting events....I just see them as a waste of time and money. But why does Brazil have such an obsession with football?

Hell no, we don't want it.

I know the traffic would be awful, the city would be crowded beyond belief, and it would cost a fortune, but, I mean, its the Olympics!

Obsession with football is fairly common throughout South America. I don't think Brazilians are more obsessed than Argentinians or Paraguayans. The thing about football is that it's really a poor man's sport; you pretty much don't need anything to play it (not even a ball, any slightly round piece of trash will do). And a lot of people can play in a small space. Plus it's a very dynamic game with very little interruptions (and the street varieties of football have barely any interruption), unlike say American Football which seems to have more stops than actual playing time. All of that combine to make it a big passion, in many nations.

The big question is why are we Brazilians better than anyone else at it, and for that I don't have any decent answer.

1) You're flag waveing no matter what ?
2) Is it true that Brazilian woman are so beautiful like we see in many soap operas ?

Do most Brazilians identify as mixed-race?

No. In terms of self-identification, this is the break up:

-White: 47.7%
-Brown (mixed race): 43.1%
-Black: 7.6%
-East Asian: 1.1%
-Indian: 0.4%

But genetic studies have found out that nearly 100% of black Brazilians have some white or indian blood, being thus mixed-race. Additionally, almost half of self-declared whites have some black or indian ancestry.

There is a very big variation by region as well. A 2010 study computed the average composition of each major ancestry to the DNA of the population of the different regions, as below:

Region European African Native American
North Region 71,10% 18,20% 10,70%
Northeast Region 77,40% 13,60% 8,90%
Central-West Region 65,90% 18,70% 11,80%
Southeast Region 79,90% 14,10% 6,10%
South Region 87,70% 7,70% 5,20%

Different studies found different numbers, but overall the story is the same.

What do you think of Carneval?

Rio2016: good thing or bad thing?
Good for Rio, but overpriced

Are you excited about the world cup next year?
Very much

Do you think Brazil can become a superpower?

We can become a great economy, the demographic bomb will hit harder more advanced economies but I don't believe that we'll become more influential in world affairs, its cultural, we are not willing to make the sacrifices required.

Anyway, another question: Do you think Brazil is safe enough to host the FIFA World Cup of 2014? I watched a tv show about football fans in Brazil and it seems that Rio especially is a very violent place.

I don't believe there will be any major incidents. The government concentrate a lot of resources and man power to increase safety during those events, also the army go to the streets. If south africa could do it, we're fine. I know people who believes that all of those military operations aimed to restore the control of the state over some major slums ruled by organized crime in Rio de Janeiro were motivated by the desire to host the world cup. 2014 will be election year, the ruling party expects to use the emotion of the cup to sell the idea that everything is fine in politics, but their plans of reelection might backfire if we don't win that cup.

From time to time, I've heard rants about how Brazilian ranchers are slashing their way through the Amazon, farming their cattle in unsustainable and irresponsible ways. How much of that is true, and is it a significant problem? Does the government have any stance on the issue? What sort of environmental policy does the Brazilian government have? What are the general popular attitudes towards Brazil's natural treasures?

The amazon is fine, we have more land under permanent reserve than the entire Europe has for its own. Preservation is somehow pursued because of the water. We use mostly hidropower, and the agriculture is also very dependant on it. So that the industry take the toll having to support countless, NGOs, and spend money in things that the local consumer couldn't care less. Ranchers actually are destroying a lesser known, savanna like, bio-ma called Cerrado.

2) Is it true that Brazilian woman are so beautiful like we see in many soap operas ?
1) what do you mean?
2) They are very gorgeous, but depending on where do you come from, you can find here pretty hard to get laid.

Do most Brazilians identify as mixed-race?
there are people with whiter and darker skins but the hair, the size of the lips and other traits make it obvious that we are extremely mixed. A racial identity sounds impossible or ridiculous to most.

I'll bet American perceptions and identities of race amuse Brazilians very much.

Is BOPE as efficient as we've heard down here?
How do Brazilians regard Peru? *Please, do be honest about this one  *
Is Portuguese hard to learn? I mean, people say it should be easy for me, since I speak Spanish as my mother tongue, but still...

I don't really know about the reputation of BOPE in Peru, but AFAIK the crime rate has reduced significantly in Rio since they were introduced, although the crime rate increased where I live (in Niterói, which is a few kilometers away from Rio and separated by the Bay of Guarabara) because the criminals ran away from the police in Rio, and found themselves over here.

I've only talked to one guy about Peru because he goes there all the time because he has family from there, but he finds it fairly boring and rainy AFAIK.

Portuguese is apparently really hard to learn, but it should be fairly easy for a Spanish speaker such as yourself.

Bope is nice, is one of the few police forces that people thrust.

People mostly ignore Peru. We think that's an awkward name for a country since it's a slang for penis. People I know tend to view your country as a more developed Bolivia, Incas heirs and stuff.
Wright portuguese correctly is tough, you'll have a easier time with the vocabulary I guess, lots of false friends, but the grammar is crazy, not german stile crazy but inelegant compared to english.

Niterói, which is a few kilometers away from Rio and separated by the Bay of Guarabara)

Wow we live in the same city!

BOPE is very efficient at what it's supposed to do, that is, killing criminals in military operations. They are too small to entirely solve the criminality problem, though (and of course the politicians don't want to unleash them entirely, as the death toll would have a big political fallout).

Most Brazilians have no idea about Peru, as they have no idea about anywhere other than Brazil itself. Educated Brazilians view Peru as an interesting and cheap tourist destination. Peru doesn't have the bad rep of Paraguay or Bolivia.

My condolences to you both :p

Well, that really surprised me. The name of my motherland means Penis in another language. Don't know if that's awesome or sad  If I ever become President, I'll see to it that we find a name that doesn't mean penis. Yaaaay.

I'll try to learn Portuguese, you guys after all are becoming hard pushers in the continent.

Thanks guys, muito obrigado (or however it is that you guys say it :D )

What's up with so many 50 year old Brazilian guys who have girlfriends who are 18? I mean, good for them and all, but I once (briefly) dated a girl who was 9 years younger than me and I found we had nothing in common. How do those older guys even relate to the teen girls they're dating?

They don't have anything in common here either, except one party has money and the other wants that money. It's a cultural thing I guess (even the Vice President, a man in his mid 70's, is married to a woman in her mid 20's).

How is the interior of Brazil thought of by the urban centers?

14. On key problems facing Brazil

“Brazilians live there” - Prince Phillip

Do you agree with this? I feel like Phillip left out "...and WIM" for some reason.

He also asked a British trekker in Papua New Guinea ''So, you managed not to get eaten, then?'' and called Helmut Kohl ''Reichskanzler''. I wouldn't trust Prince Philip's opinion on anything.

Do you consider it a problem that the standard of living for the average Brazilian is less than that of America and several other western countries? If so, how do you think Brazil should go about solving this problem?
