Here's a snippet from an email I just received:

ASPYR MEDIA TO PUBLISH SID MEIER’S CIVILIZATION® V FOR MAC

Aspyr Media bringing gaming’s most prolific strategy franchise to the Mac platform this holiday season.

AUSTIN, TX - October 19th, 2010 – Aspyr Media, Inc. announced today they will publish Sid Meier’s Civilization® V for Mac, the latest entry from the flagship turn-based strategy franchise. Released in partnership with 2K Games, a wholly owned publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), Sid Meier’s Civilization V is the newest addition to the enormously popular Sid Meier’s Civilization franchise on the Mac.

Yay!!!

Hooray!

Good that they are still talking to someone. They've obviously taken me off their Christmas card list :(

I've got the money saved for this, currently I'm playing Civ V on OS X, but it seems more Bondo and duct tape than Civ V

Wondering how the mixed reception towards Civ 5 (goodness I loathe the term ciV) will effect a port of the game to Mac.

Time will tell, though I hope a bad outcome won't make people thing mac ports are not worth the time.

Cheers!

To be honest, why don't they get civ4 bts for mac? Wondering how the mixed reception towards Civ 5 (goodness I loathe the term ciV) will effect a port of the game to Mac.

Civ4: BtS has been out for the Mac now for some time.

One bright side of Mac's receiving ports later than sooner is the likelihood of the Windows version having been patched a couple times. We generally get a more polished game with Mac ports.

Sorry, but after getting burned by delayed patches, incompatible mods/multiplayer and severely lagging expansions with Aspyr's Civ4 port, I'll never buy another Aspyr/Firaxis Mac version again.

I'm playing the Bootcamp/Steam version today and I'm happy to keep doing so, because it's just not worth being treated like a second class citizen by Firaxis.

update: Maybe if it were available on both platforms for the cost of one purchase price, I'd give it a try (ala Blizzard & SC2), but otherwise? Forget it.

This.

Aspyr won't be getting any money from me unless I see they are absolutely committed to giving a similar amount of support to Mac Civ5 as Windows Civ5 - including full support for modding.

It really better be steamplay compatible or I'll be dissappointed.

I'm sure that ciV for the Mac will be available via Steam, at some point. But the impending Mac release may be a separate matter. There are Mac versions of games that are sold at Gamersgate.com, which haven't been made available via Steam yet. It's just something to keep in mind.

Two days after release the forums will be full of "Civ 5 sucks! What other Mac strategy games can I play?" threads.

Per iGameradio:

Q. How far along in development are you at this point? Is porting the new graphics engine that Firaxis created a challenge? What issues have you encountered with it?

A. We are currently at Beta and wrapping up bug fixing. Despite this development effort including a brand new engine, from a development perspective our guys knocked it out of the park in terms of porting a fully-new game to the Mac in a somewhat short window of time. The biggest development effort thus far has been implementing SteamWorks as this is a first for us, but Valve has been helpful and we have some very talented folks on staff who do a great job in solving new problems.

Q. Steam is an integral part of the Windows version for multiplayer. Will Steam be a part of the Mac version as well? If not, how will multiplayer be handled?

A. Civilization V will utilize SteamWorks for multiplayer, achievements and DRM.

That is good news as it's theoretically going to force Aspyr to be more on the ball in terms of patching and multiplayer, and means we should also get access to DLC at the same time as Windows folks.

No mention of mod support though :(

I'm not gonna buy it until an expansion pack with non-mandatory steam comes out. Why should I have to go through all that trouble to play a game that, in my opinion, is closer to Civ Rev than civ. However, if my dad gives it to me for Christmas (That's how I got Vanilla, WL, BtS and Civ4Col), then I will probably try playing it for a while, just to avoid offending him.
