Balanced Ancient Era Start

Here was something I wrote in the Top Level balance document that apparently got overlooked. Note that this if implemented would require a good bit of SDK work.

Game Progression
This is quite a threat to C2C and its future. The sheer amount of stuff we have and the length of a good game make it so that almost no one gets past the Medieval Era. This has led people to call it “Three Mods”, meaning that there are three periods in the mod; a prehistoric to Medieval rise of civilization style experience, a Renaissance to Modern super-ROM type-game, and a super late Future mod (with Multi-Maps eventually). But the speed of progression is so slow that most people never see the last two ‘mods’. There are two things that will go a long way to solving this, but I will say this is one of the greatest threats to C2C’s future.
First, turn times are quite high after about mid-Classical, even on a quite good computer like the one I have. This slows down progress significantly and also makes things much less fun. Multi-Threading though combined with efficiency that is still available to be had means that with some work we could probably cut turn times in half from what they are now on modern machines, and potentially far more. So that is a coding issue, not really a top-level balance issue, but it does impact things greatly.
The second thing would be an actual game change, and a big one. Essentially, here is how it would work:
1. You can start in the Classical or Renaissance Eras, and that would work normally for buildings that care about those things.
2. If you chose to start in one of those two eras, some things would happen.
3. Each civ would get all of the techs up to the start of the chosen era (same as it works now)
4. After map generation, each player would be iterated though a number of times equal to the suggest size option in the WorldSizeInfos (Classical), or until there isn’t any room left in your continent (Renaissance). In each iteration, a city would be placed at the best city spot near the start position, so starting in Classical would give 8-14 cities at game start, and Renaissance would give 20-30 cities at game start.
5. Each city would then be given population equal to ½ the total food yield in its fat cross (or equal to that in Renaissance).
6. Each city would be connected to the other cities with the best available road at the time (think like Via Appia).
7. All resources in city vicinities would be improved and connected to the road networks.
8. Each city would get one worker (two in renaissance) to improve the other tiles.
9. For Each City certain buildings would be built (probably based off of the start conditions in the XML, although other algorithms could be considered). I am unsure of what specifically this would be, that would be open to input.
10. Each City would get 2 Archer-types and 3 Town Watch types to defend with (or double that in Renaissance).
11. World Wonders would be randomly built in cities based off of their size.
12. National Wonders would do the same, excepting that they would be done for each player as opposed to globally.
 
I would say we shouldn't add ANY buildings for free on build when those buildings have ANY negatives at all - particularly the crime fighting buildings is what stood out for me but there could be others. Some players may prefer not to build them at all (my wife doesn't usually.)

That is probably a good criteria - I was trying to come up with one. I have not heard back from AIAndy on if he fixed the NewCityFree tag or the loop through idea. Do you know if it has been done?

BTW I totally disagree with 11 and 12. Let them race for the GW and build NW where they are right for them; eg Bull Leaping should be in their military city.

I really love the idea of having auto-build the cheap buildings in new cities :thumbsup: ! And yes, please don´t build anything with negative features (ar maybe even better remove those from the buildings :D ).

Concerning turn times: I recently played a game nearly to the very end on a large map in snail speed and turn times were great: Even towards the end they were not more than 1 minute. I do have a pretty good computer but it is already 2 years old, so not exactly high end.

So my suggestion would be to focus more on reduction of micromanagement and less on turn times (until they become long again after you have introduced more great stuff :lol: ).

OK, I just thought it would be odd to try and build the Hanging Gardens or something in the Renaissance (it would take like one turn or something silly).
 
Is there a way for the player to select one or more Wonders to be built? Hopefully also choosing where it would be built. Of course, then the AI would also have to be able to choose as well.

Yes, theoretically that would be doable. However it would be more code, and if we do this it would already be a lot of code.

I get what you're going for there but DH's point is pretty convincing. Particularly if you have limited wonders on. I always see the first few turns of an advanced era start as being a bit of historical catchup and takes a bit of suspension of disbelief as it is. The other option would be to cutoff the potential for building any wonders that were unlocked up to the tech point you're at but that could be a bit bad too. So really, better to just leave them unbuilt and let the chips fall where they may in the first few rounds of wondergrabbing.

I guess another option would be to modify the build costs for preexistant wonders on more advanced era starts...
 
:bump: So I can find it to work on. I am currently getting a list of all the buildings by where they show up on the tech tree. So we can get back to working on this.

Note I don't think the XMLScanner is working quite correctly with the WoC XML standard we use for modules so some of these may already have prerequisite techs.

(Part 1)

1. The Pollution ones do not need a tech because they are governed by the property system.

2. The Civic buildings are tied to civic triggers so they indirectly already have tech requirements since you cannot build them without unlocking the tech that enables the civic.

3. Homeless was already discussed so no its fine.

4. The diseases are also indirectly related to techs in that they are triggered by resources. However you can trade with other civs to get those resources early and thus could get exposed to the disease before you could make the resource yourself. So yes they are ment to have no tech requirement.

5. Yes Academy, Scotland Yard and Health Spa should all have a tech requirement. However I think Scotland Yard should be changed to a generic building name and then the name Scotland Yard changed into a World Wonder that you can build.

6. The native cultures NEVER should have a tech requirement. Because you start with them at the beginning of the game

7. The corporations indirectly get them so I am unsure about this.

8. Some myths probably should have a requirement. Such as Oral Tradition tech.

Herds in particular, and to a lesser extent myths, should never be free without ever having subdued anything EXCEPT (maybe) when you start in ancient (or later). No way should you get them for free when you come out of prehistoric into ancient in any normal game that was started in prehistoric.
 
Part of the problem with the religion buildings is that they do have a prerequisite technology but that it is defined in the special building class that they are linked to.

To automate the building of any of these will require Python and I would only give the State Religion buildings free and only in Era Starts that are one era latter than when the building becomes available. The problem with that is that you can't set your civics and religion up until turn 1 which is after all the free stuff happens.

Which brings up another point - vassals and colonies spend the first 1000 turns changing to their preferred civics from the default. I suggest that when a vassal or colony is made that they get a 1-2 turn golden age to change these things since in reality they are changing from what the master civ had not from the base civics.

Totally agree and what I intended. Even then the actual ones you get will be based on a rough geographic location of the nation and the animals that can be found there.

Again colonies should probably get them in their capital when they are formed.

But isn't it more realistic for the Vassal to go into Anarchy to match its master?
 
Not you, your vassal in anarchy.

The problem is that Colonies get liberated and get the base civics and it requires hundreds of turns of anarchy to get to the civics they want, by which time they have had revolutions and split into many factions. Colonies should be happy to get some self control so should get a 2 turn golden age so they can immediately start with their preferred civics and religion.

Back to looking at when buildings should be free in new cities. the following list shows buildings available to new cities that have upgrades. I am suggesting the buildings become free at the point their upgrade becomes available as a starting point. I have already moved some of the gatherer buildings back to tribalism.
