ok so
i have no clue what caffeinejunkie is about to say but this is what libertine means xD :

libertine was originally a deragoratory term about people who were so open to personal liberty that they lacked any morals whatsoever. you know, when you try to instate some form of governmental order, libertines are those that want liberty and want to use the liberty to abuse, because they have no morals, while your governmental order is moral and orderly and good. if you're destructive, practice extreme hedonism and defend it with your liberty to do whatever you want, people would call you a libertine (think caligula, he could be decried as such) --- or they would just frame you as a libertine regardless of your position because they don't like you and it's a negative-word. the term is quite old (early modern period i think).

however, the libertine position was since coopted by other people - actual philosophers - and has been reformulated to some forms of thinking that somewhat overlap with (real, not-for-posit) libertarianism. some are honestly sympathetic, others are literally sadists, the latter espousing that freedom basically means freedom to abuse. and by abuse i don't mean like abstract structural abuses but violence, torture, and beyond, localized on an innocent's body. i would summize some of de sade's literature on this forum but i don't think the forum rules would allow it, it's that bad.

the usage of libertine now is so old that it can mean whatever depending on the person claiming who is a libertine. it wouldn't surprise me that self-identifying libertarians decry other libertarians as libertines when they think them unsympathetic. so you know, when someone is a libertarian, and another libertarian thinks that someone's position is morally degenerate, that someone can be denounced as libertine.

however, it's a fringe position and few know of it, so it's all kind of esoteric. if you google libertine philosophy what will pop up is usually de sade and libertarianism, the former of which is representative of the wicked parts, the latter of which has enough broadness to it that it can maybe summize some libertine positions.

calling bill maher a libertine is throughoutly strange to me. maybe he claimed it somewhere, idk, but i'd be surprised if such a claim is consistent, and if it's an exonym, what exactly libertine is supposed to mean.

it's kind of a parallel thing to libertarianism but yes. plenty of people that identify as libertarian and who are libertarian would line up with a number of libertines

Those islands are suspiciously uncoloured, apart from the only two which are in Turkey (even adds a couple more to it, maybe to divert attention - not like anyone would know about Imbros and Tenedos though).
