Battle of the Bands: Megadeth Vs Metallica

I like the black Album to but it been overplayed and I'm really sick of it.

Megadeth had an album called Risk.

'nuff said.

Course Metallica had the black album- which was a major sellout. That being said, the black album is still 10 times better than Risk.

Its probably fairer to compare Risk with S&M or Saint Anger. Risk was OK but I can see why others don't like it.

Its probably fairer to compare the Black Album to Countdown to Extinction (91 and 92).

true enough. sometimes it seemed like Megadeth was copying Metallica. :). I'm surprised he didn't get an orchestra together. :D

Black album had some good songs such as the god that failed, sad but true, unforgiven, wherever I may roam, through the never, don't tread on me, - actually, pretty much all of them are good songs (though sandman is too overplayed). They just sound kind of slow and weak.

But it is better to compare that with Countdown to Extinction (which I also liked)

Don't like Youthanasia? I believe it's a better album than Countdown (still not up to old form though).

Load was decent. Reload has some bad songs. The first Metallica album with songs I have to skip when it's in the CD player. But there are a few songs I really like. Fixxer, Low Man's lyric, where the wild thing's are, prince charming, fuel, memory remains, unforgiven 2.

Garage Inc- very cool album.
S&M- has some interesting stuff, but it's just not something I listen to regularly.
St. Anger- I do like the songs on this album. Would have been better if they didn't sell out and not put solos on it. After that crappy song Invisible from the MI2 soundtrack, I saw this as a step up.

Back to Megadeth- Cryptic Writings I saw as a step up from Youthanasia and countdown. But then Risk came out. I have only listened to it once I believe. The new album is okay. I like scorpion and blackmail the universe. Kick the chair has a good solo- nice they didn't abandon solos. The rest is just average imho.

My opinion on this subject is worthless

but one song forced a decision for me: Hangar 18

(prepares to be shot)

I'd go with Metallica, even though they lost all interest in writing new
material after Load. I liked Garage, Inc. and S&M, but
St. Anger stunk. All the tracks blurred together, and they apperently
tied up Hammet in a closet and wouldn't let him come out.

MEGADETH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK, Metallica fans, so far so good on the voting... so what?

Once upon a time, in a land far away, in the days when Ronald Reagan was President, Michael Jackson was genuinely cool, and sporting a mullet was considered socially acceptable, Metallica was a significant creative force, consistently producing A-class material and influencing the future direction of the genre. Meanwhile Megadeth was a clear also-ran, consistently producing mostly B-class material with a few flashes of something better and some dire missteps in-between.

These days, Megadeth remains a clear also-ran, consistently producing mostly B-class material etc. Meanwhile Metallica has turned into a sad has-been travesty of a band -- the "black album" is still pretty good, but their mid-90s efforts have the contents of one decent short album spread across two over-long discs and mixed with a lot of filler, and the less said of St. Anger the better; the band really should have been put out of its misery a decade ago now.

While there is no doubt as to which band has been most important in total, there is also no doubt as to which band I'd rather buy a new album from now.

Sounds like a plan, wanna get on it ASAP?

Give me the word and Ill book the flight. ;)

Metallica.

Not because I like Metallica, but rather due to Dave Mustaine's voice.

There was a time when I would have immediately answered Metallica. Now I don't have a response, because I just don't care enough about thrash metal anymore. Although if pressed, I suppose I would still answer Metallica, just for old time's sake.

Motorhead is great speedmetal - which also describes early metallica much more than "thrash". Metallica was very affected by speed and NWOBHM (Even copying some songs from Diamond head).

Anyways, I like Metallica better. They are more refined, got better tunes and lyrics.

I like all their albums in a different way (except for St. Anger which is crap, except for 2 songs).

I like the early thrash-speed feeling, I like the later mellow songs alot. I love S&M (though some songs were butchered :( ).

I really like their live performance and cover abilities. Their "Mercyful Fate" track is one of the best heavy metal tracks ever.

which one is the mercyful fate track? I only know them by the song titles.

I love pretty much every song on garage inc. Loverman was a good one. Astronomoy and Sabbra Cadabra were excellent covers. The weakest one's were turn the page and Tuesday's gone. Whiskey in the Jar I didn't like at first, but it has grown on me.

They've done some excellent covers.

Megadeth doesn't seem to have that many covers. I've heard Paranoid, that's alright. I heard Liar is a cover as well. I thought that was an original song by them, I guess not. Anarchy in the UK- they do the best version imho- much better than Motley Crue's crappy cover.

One of the things I liked best about Megadeth was their covers...These Boots and I Ain't Superstitious were good (lyrically quite clever) but their Anarchy in the UK is rather weak compared to the original. As I said earlier, I know nothing of the 90s stuff.

Edit: most of the Metallica covers I have heard are passable. The weirdest thing I find is to hear Motorhead covering Metallica on their last album.
