One of your cooling fans may be about to go. Any chance of opening it up and identifying the loudest fan, or possibly just taking a can of compressed air to the dust buildup?

its not deafening and its probably more because ive left it on overnight a couple of times for downloads/system scans :)

Congrats to IglooDude for 200,000 points!

And for 1000 WU's too!

I have issues with my fan and cpu temp (I suspect) as well, but motherboard monitor as well as other programs I've tried can never seem to read any temperatures - anything I need to do to make it work?

For some reason every single computer I get has issues with the fans, even when I buy expensive low noise fans they always end up sounding like a lawnmower on steroids :(

Igloodude :hatsoff:

Thanks. But really, it's only because I've coopted lots of non-production servers and workstations around here. :badcomp:

You need to select the right mainboard during installation, but the rest should be configured automatically. If you are not sure which mainboard you have, try Aida32. It'll give you all the info you need.
And if you are looking for a really siltent cooling system, i reccommend water cooling. :)

And kudos to you, Igloo!

I wasn't asked for that during installation, can I select it now that I've installed it or should I reinstall? I can't find any place to provide the info, it's just full of options on temperature format and stuff..

If you open your start menu and browse to the "MBM5" folder, do you find a "MBM 5 Config Wizard" in it? If yes, then start it and follow the directions.
If not, i would reccommend reinstalling.

Thanks, it seems to be measuring the cpu temp now! Do you have a ballgame figure of how high is too high? I have a P4 2600Mhz

Cool!
If i recall, AMD specified the max temp for its cpus as 85°C. I would suspect it is similar for Intel ones. Motherboard temp sensors are notoriously inaccurate, however. I would consider a error margin of at least 20°C-30°C.

Edit. This post is far more comprehensive.

Ok guys - you've sold me - I'll join.

I'll put you on my work laptop - it's on 24/7 except when I travel. It's a bit like me - rarely works hard.

If it doesn't fry anything, I might add it to my 2 PCs at home.

Which version should I download?

Wary of betas

Do I go console graphics or text?

It's a matter of preference. I prefer the console version, as it allows you to set up FAH as service.

thanks Till - I have no idea what that means but ut souns impressive.

Ok - installed and running at 100%

Won't need the cenral heating on next winter - the CPU is putting out enough heat to warm the entire house!!

I'll be delighted if this cooks the CPU - I've been trying to get lap top replaced for awhile.

Till, with that kind of error margin I guess actual numbers are useless :) Mine seems to get to 55-56 C, I'll try to keep an eye on the temp and see if there's any correlation to my crashes.

Warmonger, I'm using the standard client which provides a little icon in the toolbar which you can hover your mouse over to see how far it is (or double click for more info). It runs automatically on startup as well. You should probably disable the screensave mode in the client if it's active since some have reported problems with it.
