The 'walking' thing pulling the blob is likely a kinesin molecule - it's main job is to pull blobs to and from the cell membrane.

I'm not too sure were the blob (it's a vesicle, and it's full of proteins) is being pulled - maybe the Golgi Apparatus. Usually proteins are processed there for secretion from the cell.

We have also stopped progressing in rank I think, definitely need some fresh blood!

We just hit a little gap where the next teams to overtake were spaced further apart. Our rocketship rise up the ladder can expect to slow a bit as we become in competition with more serious teams.

Our main man IglooDude mentioned that his folding was slowed by his office moving to a new building. Once he's back to his normal awesome input our rise should speed back up again.

Good to see HP&H and lost_civantares again and welcome to the new contributors to the cause as well. :)

If you have no idea what this discussion is all about click here for details. We are contributing our unused computing time to help cure diseases, and having a little fun doing it as a team. "Fresh blood" is always welcome, just make your team number 47958 and post a note in this thread if you would like to introduce yourself or let everyone know you're now contributing too.

Thanks Furiey! He's a sleepy lil' one :)

El Mac, could you provide a narrative for the full sequence? That would be great!

Oh jeez, I don't think I can take that kind of pressure!! :scared:

But the new office doesn't have the same kind of real estate (specifically, empty cubicles and server room rackspace) that the old one did, and we tossed a lot of the crap PCs that I was leaving powered up and folding, so my total output is probably going to be a shadow of its former self. :(

The first bit is inside the blood vessel. The lymph cells are crawling along. Then we zoom in to see how the lymph cell connects with the vessel wall.

Bump!

PLEASE can we have a new thread?

I've heard complaints about BOINC, that it crashes systems. You don't think so? What I like about BOINC is the ability to modify what you're working on.

Sorry for the delay.

I don't think that BOINC has ever been responsible for one of my rare system crashes. It's possible, ages ago, that it caused a problem, but the recent releases (at least 6-8months, perhaps longer) have been seamless.
I do find it a resource hog if I leave it running while trying to do other stuff, but that's as much a system problem (1.4Ghz Athlon, 768MB RAM) as a busy program. I imagine on my low-grade system that F@H would also drag, and cause everything else to slow as well.

I also like the ablility to modify the settings - things like setting BOINC crunching to run on only one chip/core on a dual system, that sort of thing. Very handy, though of course I don't get to use it myself. Their sign-up procedure has been streamlined, and is sooo much simpler than before (email addresses instead of URLs and account keys). And installing BOINC on my gf's Mac was simple.

As for splitting into other CFC teams, with only forty or so of you, I can understand why only one team. Considering your progress and ranking, I just assumed there were more people crunching with you. Way to go!

Ok I just joined! How long will it take my first unit? I'm running 2.6GH and 256 RAM at 100%

Probably within 4 days. Don't trust the 'estimating' software until you have finished a few work units.

Thanks for joining!

i normally forget i even have this :D not sure whether thats a good thing but it means that i dont turn it off :D

Ok, say your slower computer has been given a folding job that has already taken a few weeks, and you're only at 60%.

Is there a quick way out? Can you copy the job from your slower computer to your faster one? Can you just skip out on completing it?

I don't know. I think you can delete a file that you're currently working on, but you really don't need to. Some jobs take longer than others. You should check the due date.

Adam! Welcome!

It only downloads/uploads information every week or so, dialup shouldn't be too much of a hinderance. Most of the work is done while disconnected from the internet.

Here is a step by step guide to folding with a non net-connected computer. This will not work on 'public' computers as you must have permission to write to the registry in order to fold on a machine.

The key is to send and receive from the same computer only as the Stanford servers get confused if a WU is sent to one machine and received back from a different one.

As for speeding up your folding the only thing I've found that helps is when I leave my machine alone for awhile I disable the background processes like anti-virus and make sure all windows are closed.

And welcome to nc-1701, Adamb0mb, and Ball Lightning!
