[Beyond the Sword] History In The Making

The fact that it is still going is a tribute to your fine work. I'm looking forward to HiTM being 3.17 compatible. Take your time. Enjoy yourself.
Wow, this thread is still going. :)

I would have thought History in the Making would have been long forgotten about by now.

I took a long break from gaming. Too much in real life going on this summer. What with long hours at work, a new girlfriend and tending to my children, I haven't had much spare time for gaming. I recently did a major hardware upgrade to my gaming rig, so I thought maybe I'd try and get back into the Civ4 modding scene.

I see a patch came out... v3.17. I'll see what I can do about updating HiTM to be v3.17 compatible. Please don't ask me when I'll get it done, though. I still have alot of stuff going on in real life, so I'll get to this project when I can.

In the mean time, I'm going to do some research on what mods are updated to v3.17, and see which ones can be easily converted from v3.12 up to v3.17 myself.

So stay tuned... I'll work on this when I can.

3.17 was the final patch I thought.

Indeed... mad props to both of you! :)

I haven't read through the several pages of stuff since I last logged in. But I'll check out those posts that Rusty has documented.

You should send me some of your tweaks, too. I'd like to see them, if you don't mind. ;)

Ha, now Im going to have to remember which bits I tweaked

Most were really quite minor (I remember tweaking some of the resource appearance) e.g. Whales more common, and at lower latitudes--silver in plains and deserts, gold in any hills (not ice), gems in deserts and a chance in plains too....

I've played a lot with them, and all seem pretty well balanced, as the map generator takes them all into account and doesn't flood the map in any way...Oh yeah, I made Oil give a LOT more gold (from a well that is), as it is "black gold", but even more valuable in the modern world...was also trying to find a way to balance your "oil prospecting wells", to make the ai actually use the tiles, but not overpower them-- haven't come up with anything I liked yet (atm They just make a desert tile 1:hammers:, which the ai will never use)

Nothing was in any way fancy (that I recall), just some personal tweaks as I said....I really should make a note (for myself) somewhere when I change stuff :mischief:....I can send you the resource changes files if you like.

Drew, see posts 2040 and 2041 for a memory refresher.

Oh, when you PM'd me about your patch you mentioned this :

"I think I've solved a couple of other display bugs with wonder videos too..."

Are programmers Zen Buddhists?

Because the more I try to understand it, the more I see the interconnectedness of all things:p

I also see more when I wear my reading glasses- like indents and stuff:blush:

It's probably because you see that just about everything, can be broken down into very simple patterns. But these simple patterns can and do lead to incredible complication and beauty, from Bach through Butterflies to the Brain. :)

P.S. I've had (and still got) a really nasty chest infection so that's why I haven't been around at all. Starting to feel better, will be around again soon....

Get yourself some anti-biotics :old:

That's an elegant reply about patterns.

As for programming, I've been contemplating what it would take to test the changes I've proposed to muskets and gunpowder seige. But I've noticed that changes to the tech tree could have unintended consequences on random events, that all of our additional UUs complicate things when it comes to adding and changing units. If a unit is changed enough to become a new class, that complicates interactions such as flanking attacks.

Experimenting with Airships and Zeppelins has showed me how easy it is to make a mistake.... reminds me of accounting.

I just learned that the zulu cannot build a stable , (their second UB)unless they have cattle. This makes some sense in that it gives a financial bonus for cows, but it's inconvenient in wartime in my part of the continent to be without them.

I hadn't really noticed. Can you build the other UBs that grant resource bonuses without the resource, or are you prevented?

There are a few buildings in same mode...(off top of my head) Globe Theatre needs dyes to build, Hippodrome might need horses too(?)

Sorry if this has already been asked/answered but I really don't want to look through 100 pages of posts to find out. Two questions basically;

1. Grave states that HitM is not recommended for multiplayer, which is fair enough, but is it possible to get it working at all for 2 player by direct I.P., LAN or internet?

Friend of mine really wants to play Civ 4 online with me again and I cant bring myself to play Vanilla anymore after HitM.

2. The PLANETARY map size doesnt work with a lot of the maps, it gives me a 'bad video memory allocation' message with maps like Terra. Is this a known bug? I also get 'beyond the sword.exe has encountered a problem etc' message in later games. They become so frequent sometimes that I can only play for about half an hour each time.

With this mod Civ uses about 500mb of my cards vram....but it shouldnt be causing that should it?

1) If you both have the same files, it might work for MP, sorry I've never tried MP with HiTM myself. The game itself is now pretty stable.

2) Again sorry, never tried Planetary size maps (they are really a lot larger than CIV was designed for though). It may be related to your vid card, might not. You could try allocating more Virtual Mem on your system, this may help alleviate crashes, I think it has helped some people.

Sorry to be so vague  good luck :)

It's ok lol. The Planetary map size is pretty colossal to be fair. My card is an nvidia 8800GT 512, and my page file with RAM and Virtual Memory combined is 5gb (2Gb RAM, 3Gb VM) so I dont think it will be that.

Ah well, it's a random problem. Hopefully someone else has experienced this and fixed it.

My experience is that HiTM has far less MAF's than RoM 2.3 i.e. I always play on huge maps and hardly ever get bored.

I have a smaller rig and stick to huge marathon, but I, too had a lot of challenges when I first started playing the mod. Going from memory I took a lot of steps that improved the game incrementally. Among them-

re-allocating virtual memory

trying different anti-viral sweeps to get rid of adware , bloatware and what-not.

clearing the cache when I started a game

disabling auto-save

making sure my machine wasn't overheating

uninstalling CIV, BTS, HitM, etc. cleaning, scanning, defragging, re-installing ( this would be tricky since we use an outdated patch to play HitM at this time .)

Ultimately I hired a service to help me with my computer. We eventually determined a bad sector ( or something ) in the microsoft code area. Since it I have an HP laptop, I had to reformat from scratch. Pretty cool, huh?

It doesn't mean I wouldn't buy another HP, but that was the last issue.

It plays well with 100s of units now until it eventually overheats, so I just have to pay attention to how long I've been playing and how hot the thing feels.

Greetings. I just downloaded and installed the HitM mod, but I can't create a game with it. It lets me pick all my options, but regardless of leader chosen, map size, or game length, the game hangs up during initialization. It doesn't get very far before doing this, either. Then I have to either kill it with the task manager, where it registers as "not responding", or if I wait it will kill itself.

I apologize if this question has been asked before, but there's a *lot* of posts here to sift through. So any advice or input on this problem would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

MY first guess is that you have patched to version 3.17 for BTS? If so, fraid HiTM is only as yet compatable with BTS Patch 3.13.

Nope, I only just found out that there was a 3.17 patch while looking for a reason that this isn't working :P
