[Beyond the Sword] History In The Making

Grave:-

On another point, not entirely sure about the research times, 43 turns (I think it was anyway) on marathon off the bat for An Husb is an awful long time...it especially accentuates the effect of barbs--they now come much, much earlier in real terms--Makes for an interesting game, even though at one point I reached the dreaded "nothing to build, can't afford a war, and more cities or any more troops, so building and disbanding units" time..

Oh and barb galleys were quite ridiculous in said game, spawning everywhere and in large numbers---I had 8 barb galleys stalking 5 water side cities at one point, the ais had the same problems too...I know this isn't your doing, but it makes it quite impossible (to my way of thinking) to have a "seafood capital"...the barb galleys will just pillage the lot.

Idea:- No barb galleys until at least someone has sailing..having them appear while your struggling to build first couple of cities is pretty much game breaking......even if you go for an early sailing, unlike other barb battles, you can't pick the terrain, and you will keep having to replace the galleys all the time, whihc is damn expensive and city resource diverting..

Also, did you change maintenace/dist from palace, as I was getting crucified economy wise, from not that many cities? (ais were hardly building any cities either)The overall tech rate got slowed to a snails pace (which isn't necessarily a bad thing)..left the game at 500AD having just been pipped by someone yet unknown to COL (in 500AD!) previously if I didn't get the Senate done BC, I'd reckon I was probably going to miss it...

Anyways, overall a sound job as always :)

That's been my impression so far as well on two attempts at Huge/Marathon....Except for Shaka... he seemed to have a lot of cities.

Science and Economy are more challenging on Huge/Epic too. The step from Medieval science upwards is really a long one. And even in the Industrial Era it took me14 turns to discover Plastics. At that time I had about 25 cities, several "We love the ... day"-s, the Spiral Minaret and Courthouses, Libraries and Universities everywhere and some occasional Observatories.

Re: J Unit Religion mod:-

Grave:- I founded Taoism (converted as state) built a few settlers in cities where religion existed, religion didn't spread with the settler in any of the cities.

Checked all the logs, no python errors whatsoever in game..Checked all the event logs..everything being supposedly initiated and recorded as should be...

So I dunno, it just isn't working as it should for me...

TO Everyone else:- are you getting the insti spread of your religion as shown above in new cities (old HiTM players will be familiar with this)?

Please confirm either way...

Thanks

I haven't really noticed. Thinking it over I plead maybe.

I have seen that "Junit Religion "phrase flash across my screen in red once each game, but I don't know what if anything happened.

My seafood city was on an icebound gulf this game, and the barb galleys kept to the open ocean , so they were less of an issue.

On the subject of barb galleys:- yesterday's tryout game...

I had just built my first city (after cap of course)...and in this game, I was so coastal based, that I decided an early Sailing was necessary (which got me attacked by Giggling Mess-but that's another story).

So I spammed half a dozen galleys, got rid of all the barb boats, then guess what happens? Giggler gets the Illyrian Pirates event...and when he gets destroyed, I get left with a coast full of barb triremes  Plus they now blockade cities and stop you using any sea tiles...Philly, relying on 3 seafood sources went from size 10 to a stagnant size 6

My galleys, trying bravely to defend seafood stocks against barb triremes, was like plonking Spearmen down to protect Gold mines against barb axes...pointless...I quickly realised that all I was doing, was giving the barbs' triremes free promotions, so in one fell swoop, abandoned the fishing industry entirely..

A quick metal casting is in order you say? Metal Casting??!! Metal Casting???!! [pissed] After the end of the war with Sumeria (which he started, twice) --I only kept one "dye" city, couldn't even afford to keep his cap-- which completely killed my economy until I could get Courthouses up and running. At that point, Metal Casting may as well have been Rifling...

Crazy thing is though.....I a little later get a message telling me Im the 2nd most advanced nation on the planet :crazyeye: Go figure.

I haven't got the hang of 2.0 anything yet. I have lost or abandoned each game before I've left the middle ages. I'm not sure why.
Teching seems slower, but that could be a good thing. Certainly I can't war as well without a seige tower, but even when I did conquer my rivals my economy imploded. I think I start fading at the end of my clearcutting economy.

I tried playing as Rome and got beat to the AP. Maybe it was the map. I tried my favorite, Hannibal on a Big and Small. I cottaged like crazy.I kept pace in techs- well actually I caught up with a specialized science city ( that was the one with the frozen seafoood ) - but 2/3rds of the civs had about twice my power rating. Egypt had me hemmed in ,I had no horses , so I eventually attacked them.

Those Nubian archers got a much needed buff- check it out for yourself:D

Anyway, I haven't found a balance, so next game I'll try gearing down a level.

I've had Illyrian pirates, but they weren't a problem because the barb galleys didn't leave anything for them ;)

Has anyone else other than Drew and myself had barb galley challenges? Or is this one of those random things like getting the same neighbor three or four games in a row?

So here a saved file, the intro screen has now chnaged from the default after I re downloaded the mod plus patch. No buttons etc on the start screen.

I tried to play your save 4 times.

Sometimes I got the AP backround start screen with no buttons, as you describe (sometimes i didn't get that far )- a couple of messages flicker on the screen then it immediately crashes. I think they said "failed to load" and "Failed to uncompress files"

You don't have Civ Gold, do you ?

No I dont have the Gold version

Just to ask some of the obvious questions before somebody competent arrives..

Does your pathway look like this?

C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword\Mods\HISTORY IN THE MAKING

OR this?

C:/Program Files/Civilization IV/Beyond the Sword/Mods/

Tony. I just had a go and :-

Hit return a few times, moved warrior around, all normal...can't easily diagnose if I can't recreate,

What exactly did your screen look like?

You also may need to enable error logging in Civ.ini file, and then provide the PythonErr.log. If it is BUG MOD related, the team there are very helpful, and we/they can help fix problem.

Hey Grave, sorry if this has been asked before but the last time I asked you were not around to answer. I was wondering if it is at all possible to get HitM workin for 2 players by internet, direct IP or LAN.

Me and my flatmate really want to start playing Civ together again but I can't bring myself to go back to vanilla Civ4 after playing your awesome mod (kinda like trying to play Oblivion without the 200+ mods ive added....just ain't gonna happen).

The reason I ask is that when HitM loads up I notice the multiplayer ioption is greyed out completely and I was not sure whether you disabld the option or the mod itself is generally unsuitable for multiplayer.

Cheers for any answers.

In answer to my own question...no this mod definitely DOES NOT work with 2 players in any way. Client gets an error message as the game is setting up. Dammit.

I downloaded the patch 2.02 ran the installer and nothing still the same 2.01 what did I do wrong and yes I read the FAQ
