Biggest Blunders?

for me, making the jump from Warlord to Noble, and thinking that barbs would NOT go for my cities. Quick lesson learned there >.>

It takes some certain amount of turns before the barbs will go for your cities, unless its an event. I have seen them run the other way when I founded a city right next to one once (with an escort, of course)

Do you have anything about french workers? ;)
Don't you remember that since CivIII, most french leaders are industrious? :p

well, it's true that there are more strikes in France alone than in the rest of the world.
But our workers productivity is among the highest (they rest so much, they're fresh when they do work).

step 1: found creative cons.
step 2: found minning Inc.
step 3: spread cc into a city.
step 4: try to spread mining into same city.
step 5: wonder what the heck's 'displace'.(!)
step 6: wonder why cc is gone from city.
step 7: spread cc into city again.
step 8: repeat steps 5-8, replacing Corp names as nessacary.
step 9: check civilipedia.
step 10: crack com monitor, get minor concussion.

There's something to be said for that productivity. America produces more total that Europe, but less efficiently. Don't get me wrong, I like my country, but the US needs to start learning some things from other countries too (many nations have used pieces of the American model to succeed, but rightly not ALL of it). It's practically a social stigma on you if you don't work 50+ hour weeks in some places...people expect you to do it because they do. All the while, they basically waste a good portion of those 50 hours due to bad process setups/decision making etc...and yet somehow THAT is acceptable!

Er...back on topic. I DoW'd Incans as Ghengis in my most recent game (god, my research is terrible with Ghengis), and thought since I'd just gotten grenadiers I could roll against their rifles. About 4 turns later...I had grenadiers on Infantry:eek:.

Also in the past week, I was asked to DoW a distant rival by an AI I wanted a decent relationship with, so I did so. I was not paying attention, and got landed on by galleon troops, and got one of my better cities razed .

I thought I was done with blunders, but this weekend I managed to squeeze in a full BtS evening when the wife was out with her friends. Naturally I had some beer to help me make the evening pleasant which likely made me do some blunders though...

1. Waiting for the 6th city to produce a university so my science city could build Oxford. While waiting, I had nothing to build but realised I needed the forbidden palace and where do you think I placed it? Ofc, in the science city which already had NE and when I got around to build oxford it took me quite some thinking before I realised why I couldn't build it in the science city...

2. So, I had no place for oxford now so I figured, let's place it in my third science city (my second the capitals open spot was dedicated to wallstreet and that I remembered...) When sober though I had decided to put the National Park in the third city as I had left it's BfC with alot of forests for forest preserves. Well, when NP came around a few turns later I had no spot to build it in as Oxford had now taken that place...

Well, I won the game anyway (or will win, about 20 turns from cultural when I quit playing but quite annoying little mistakes anyway... ;)

1.I still regularly forget to change civics, especially to bureacracy.

Not anymore with the pyramids though. Now that I am a bit better at the game, the time I spend building the mids I usually think about why Im (pre)chopping all those forests. Because I like the mids so much (theyre so awesome for SE midgame) I don't forget it anymore.

2.National wonders: I NEVER optimalized the placings of those. Im playing a multiplayergame now though, and my opponent is really slow, so this time it's actually going allright. My biggest problem is wall street, I never know where to put it. I always try to keep my capital wonderfree for a long time, then I end up building them too late.

3. Building waaaaaaaaaaay too many units late in the game. Thinking that I need stacks of 30 modern armors + big support to win the game, while I should focus on speed, rather then totally owning someone with 0 losses.

1.I still regularly forget to change civics, especially to bureacracy.

Last game, was ramses (industrious+spiritual) on prince/epic and maybe 3rd civ to democracy. Capital had good hammers so I switched back to bureacracy + organized religion and made a try for the statue of liberty.

Luckily it wasnt a huge blunder as I got it built, but the I realized I forgot to switch religions! I was confucian early game, but went to free religion via shadawa paya, and temporary went to Christianity to appease a neighbour before going back to FR. So I switched to OR providing no benefit to my SoS build as my capital wasnt christian

Gifting my cities to my vassal, because my vassal kept making my cities pop up the message about wanting to join due to culture pressure -- just when I was hitting the enter key out of habbit.

That really is a horrible interface/system and needs to be fixed to prevent it. Especially when getting those useless pop-ups every turn, nothing good can come from that.

Accepting a vassal when I had a permanent alliance in an OCC, then watching as my ally gave away all my techs. Then watching the vassal refuse to give me his techs and eventually him breaking away and try to launch.

Telling a friend that the enemies can't see great people then watching a great merchant die on his expedition across foreign soil.

Opening up this "worldbuilder" tool to see enemy land (didn't feel like conquering the rest), then not figuring out how to get out.

Just had one. Built the statue of Liberty on an island. 10+ turns later when I looked at the city screen I couldn't see the free specialists in all of my cities, suddenly remembered SoL only gave free specialists to the cities on the same continent.

Geez, but the SoL in reality IS on a small island, right??

Putting a worker to sleep in my capital when there was nothing for him to do early in the game, forgetting that I had done that and then wondering for 3000 years why my capital was so unhappy. They had a warrior there to keep the peace, after all!

...oops. That was a worker. Workers don't make great police. :(

I won a space race on settler difficulty (for a HOF gauntlet, the only time I have played settler, man it was easy, it was a duel map and Mansa offered to become my vassal 3 times which would have given me an unwanted conquest win lol), ran organised religion basically the whole game, and forgot to pick a state religion. Very silly indeed.

Creating a super-awesome State Property/Levee Production City in former jungle-land, then acquiescing to a strong/powerful/backstabbing AI's request to enter Free Market. Massive starvation in Hammertown...

Accidentally holding down ALT while attempting to contact a Civ for a trade.

Purposefully holding down ALT while attempting to contact a Civ, but clicking on the wrong Civ.

I forgot one..

Doing over 100 spy mission jobs to try to culture flip a city to my side. This was a city that was already struggling against my culture and should have practically flipped on its own.

Unfortunately I had TRUSTED Firaxis to at least beta-test things before they ship them to the public. In this case, the culture-missions are so broken, that they don't even change a thing after an infinit amount of missions.

First big blunder, I was Space Racing against Mansa Musa, I think. I had it all figured out. I usually space my spaceship parts out so that they all finish within a turn of one another. I'm just hitting Enter-Enter-Enter waiting for the turn that will bring me victory. And Oops! Mansa beats me to Space Race by one turn! Grrrr! I remember thinking, gee I had these stupid workers, why didn't I replace all those farms with workshops?
So next blunder, I'm wiser, I think. I'm going for a cultural win. I had to push out a Wonder of some sort in my third-best cultural city. Without doing the math, I figure I'll replace all my farms with workshops and work only the big-hammer tiles and assign priest specialists, so I'm totally maximizing hammers. I know my population will suffer, but it's only temporary. I figure once I have the wonder, I will replace my farms and grow back. Well, one thing leads to another and I forget to change back till my city is population 1! Churning out culture though

Another one that escapes me a few times. I place my spies into enemy cities and fortify them to bring down their walls cheaply & quickly. Then after I declare war, I find out all my spies get ejected and thrown back into my borders due to my war declaration! Oooops. Yeah, I've been told that's a bug.

- Constantly building the Forbidden Palace in my future designated science city
- Going for a culture win with HC and building Hermitage in the 4th culture town.
- Over writing a nearly perfect Ramses II game with a god awful slog of a game as Justinian (the later had been virtually nothing but war -- spawned 6 GG's on marathon and not even to liberalism yet-- and no end in sight against a sprawling Gilgamesh/Zara alliance ... )
- Founding my military production town one tile too far from the pigs -- (never did get enough food to work those hills)
- Agreeing to war against a distant AI, only to have my 'ally' end the war next turn with the war opponent refusing to talk for the next hundred years ...
- Making a new vassal on a barb infested continent ... and my vassal getting explorers for defenders (doh)
