BirdNES 3: When Worlds Collide

TO: Electors
FROM: Juan II, King of Spain and Navarre, Prince of Algiers

A decision as crucial to the future of our church as the one presented to you is surely not to come for a life time or more. I request, humbly, that the electors come to Barcelona for a word with myself, the most Catholic of kings, within the coming year. So I may discuss the stability of Empire, of Europe and of our faith in the coming decades. May our Lord protect and bless you all.

To: Juan II, King of Spain and Navarre, Prince of Algiers
From: The Electors

We appreciate your concern for the Church and for Europe. Our mandate calls for an election of the Emperor within 90 days of being called to Frankfort and time does not permit a trip to Barcelona if we are to meet that deadline. But we will read any correspondence you send us, upon our arrival there and prior to our casting ballots.

Welcome back!

TO: Kingdom of England
FROM: Juan II, King of Spain and Navarre, Prince of Algiers

Your highness, why do you test me so? Why have you decided, against my wishes and warnings, to make a settlement in my own lands? I do not seek to humiliate you for your ignorance, but I must remind you that all lands of the continent, unless otherwise agreed upon, are property of the most Catholic kingdom of Spain. Leave my lands and I shall forgive you, like a good Christian would, however if you remain and continue your insolent claims I shall have no choice but to remove you by force.

From the Kingdom of England,
To Juan II, King of Spain,

None but you recognize your claim to all of the new worlds. Certainly England sees plenty of opportunity and land for herself. So too no doubt do Scotland and Portugal and all Christians of faith, hope and heart.

Will you also demand the withdrawal of the good Christians of Scotland and Portugal so that you might forgive them and in the same breath demean and insult them also?

No, it is only through cooperation and agreement that the pagans of the new world will be brought to Christ. If we squabble or if I, or the lords of Portugal, Scotland and other lands bow to your mercentile short-sightedness and selfishness, we will squander our opportunity to spread the word of God now and forever. And the Devil will have won.

Rethink your demands. And your tone.

While the death of my beloved father casts a shadow over the Austrian court, there are still events of great joy for us to celebrate. Mainly, the upcoming marriage of my daughter Eleanor to the King of England, Charles VIII, within these next few years (upcoming turn).

With the vote for the new Holy Roman Empire taking place before the coming to age of Louis Jagiellon of Bohemia, I, as regent of Bohemia, will send Louis' tutor to take his place in Frankfort, as I believe is customary (OOC: correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that in the case of an under-age prince-elector, their tutor was sent to carry out the vote in their stead.)

Withe recent events in Italy, we hope that you agree with us when we say that we no longer see a need for warring between the Italian states, and instead peace should be continued as it has these last few years, with countries remaining at present borders.

There you are wrong my friend. It was signed by a treaty under the eyes of the church between Portugal and Spain that all lands of the new world be divided between us exclusively. My father saw to this with his own hand, under the grace of God. If you wish to go against our treaty you can answer to Portugal, Spain and our Lord above.

Perhaps you should be speaking to France, they are the aggressors, Milan was simply defending Genoa's right to be free from French rule.

Milan has and is still willing to negotiate peace as long as Genoa and Milan are both free from French influence.

Our records indicate that there is no such agreement.

We welcome the voice of the pope regarding this disagreement.

OOC: The Treaty of Tordesillas was signed in 7 June 1494 in Tordesillas, Spain and ratified by the Pope at that time and again in 1506 via the bull Ea quae.

This NES began in 1490 and no such treaty was signed within the NES. If you want to sign such a treaty, you can do so now if you think the signatories will agree. But no such document exists within this reality. I invite you to ask some sort of moderator regarding this issue, but I assure you that no such treaty exists in this reality.

Luckyboots, your opinion is much valued. What is your opinion?

Let there be peace in the New World. You have no legitimate claim to colonizing or trading in the New World that Scotland, England or the other Christian nations of Europe do not possess. Let us put these differences behind us and move forward together, bringing Christ to the pagans together.

TO: Henry, King of England
FROM: Juan II, King of Spain and Navarre, Prince of Algiers

No. I'm afraid I can't let you do that Henry. The new world is split between the brother nations of Portugal and Spain, there is no room for Englishmen on my claims. I, just as my father before me, have all the rights to claim lands rightfully discovered by my order and charter. I do not repeat myself, so adhere to this warning while you can. If you do not leave my lands, and turnover all buildings located on it within the year, I will bring forth the might of Spain on your kingdom. God wills it!

European nations' stats going up shortly. That way you can begin to ponder the Election. Others tomorrow.

Europe and Colonies have updated stats. No one else yet.

Please include the age of your ruler in with your next orders and I will add it to the stats.

Ohhh, things get interesting. Loads of money to spend...

To: Kings Juan of Spain and Henry of England
From: King João II of Portugal

My brothers, we have heard of your discussion regarding England's and Scotland's recent presence in the continent where New Spain was established, and we wish to say something.

We know that King Henry has decided to establish a colony north of New Spain, and that Scotland has established a colony in one of the islands that were recently discovered by my navies. However, none of them have any place in this continent, for the Pope gave Spain and Portugal (and only Spain and Portugal) the blessing to bring civilization and Christianity to the new continent, through a treaty that established a line, going across the Cape Verde Archipelago: from Cape Verde to the North, the new continent belonged to Spain; from Cape Verde to the South, to Portugal.

Maybe you missed this treaty due to your youth, but let me tell you that it is very much real, and that indeed the Holy Father, as His representative on Earth, indeed gave both Portugal and Spain lordship over the new lands that were discovered by Bartolomeu Dias and Cristobal Colón so many years ago.

So please, let this matter go, and acquiesce to the wishes of God that only Spain and Portugal civilize the new continents.

OOC: Yes, there wasn't a Treaty of Tordesillas, which delimited the limits of Spain's and Portugal's spheres of influence in the rest of the world from a line placed 370 miles west of Cape Verde. But in here, Spain and Portugal brokered other treaty, that only talked about the New World, so we win here.

Venice is delighted to announce that we have come into a firm and lasting alliance with the great and noble City of Bologna, and we do solemnly guarantee the rule of the Bentivoglio family there, and we also do guarantee their sovereignty against all those who might trespass upon it. The said City of Bologna has agreed that from this day forth they shall have Venice as their guide and leader as we face the outside world as one. We pray to our Almighty Father that this treaty will be everlasting and firm.

Why didn't Spain meet China in Columbo? That's a pretty significant Chinese outpost!
