BirdNES 3: When Worlds Collide

Venice again protests at all other zealous nations that have not yet set up colonies being excluded, and we ask that the Pope intervene to prevent some criminal zealous Christian brothers being pardoned, nay, profiting from their crime and being allowed to preach the faith abroad like the noblest and best of Christians, while others among good Christians, who have not sinned against the proclamations of the Lord (through your Holiness) might be excluded for ever.

We entrust this matter, as ever, to the care and holy Justice of your Holiness, and to the piety of the Christian Kings of Spain and Portugal, that they may not go ahead with such an unjust settlement.

I will accept them any time up until I begin writing (in your case the Western Europe section. I am updating stats for those I have already recieved. If you take longer than the 23rd to get them in, you will externd my already "not very fast process". If you get them to me in the next couple of days, you might get a bonus of some sort: gold, tech, faction loyalty plusses etc.

The Signoria may suggest a list of suitable candidates, and we shall establish the new archbishopric in Tunisia.

As for the New World, the compromise suggested by the Spanish does not make any mention of excluding other nations, and land exists on his map which remains unclaimed. The King of Spain has, in his great wisdom and humility, put forth an offer of which the Papacy greatly approves.

After the resolution of these recent difficulties, future settlers should have no confusion about the procedure of settlement. The Body of Christ must be consulted and a suitable location agreed upon. Future illicit settlement will have no recourse to ignorance.

The Pope has agreed to support my humility in compromise, Spain hopes all parties agree to this as our Rock has spoken.

The Spanish proposition is nearly perfect. If that island to the northwest of Diascia (right south to the island that has been divided between Spain and England) were to be conceded to Portugal, it would be perfect.

From: Demetrius, Caesar of Russia
To: The Grandmaster of the Teutonic Order

Word has reached Us that you and your Brothers[1] and their Subjects have deemed the Latin Caesar no longer capable of adequately protecting your lands and freedom, and have decided to look for more puissant and proximate protectors. Though you are Germans and Latins, while We Ourselves and Our subjects are Russians of Greek faith, know that your coreligionists and compatriots have often found protection under Our reign as well in previous years.

We have held council with Our Notables[2], and decided that We might extend this protection to you and yours as well. However, inasmuch as your Brothers have often been the enemies of Our ancestors, and also to disprove all rumours about your dishonest dealings in these matters that are being spread by our mutual enemies, We must request a number of conditions:

The Brothers will pledge to send at least half their army to Our campaigns at Our first request.

Russian garrisons will be established in Riga, Derpt and Revel, to protect the cities from bearers of ill-intent extraneous or internal, with the help of the Brothers themselves, and the Russian fleet will be free to use the Brothers' ports as it does Russian ones.

Likewise, the Russian traders will be allowed to trade in Livonia and Estland without any of the tariffs set up for outsiders.

The Brothers will send two of their high-ranking Magistrates and a close male relative of the current Grandmaster to Moscow as hostages of good will.

Lastly, the Brothers will - of course - desist from their efforts to recruit the protection of Our brother the King of Denmark, lest they cause strife between us. They should also abandon their attempts to build a coalition against Our brother the King of Poland, though they can be safe in knowing that they shall be protected from any claims the King of Poland may raise against them, if, of course, they would accept this proposal.

In exchange, We will not, as the less charitable of Our Notables suggest, in any way oppress or restrain the Latin faith in the Brothers' lands, or interfere in the internal affairs of the Brothers themselves or limit their amount in any way. And furthermore We will also allow the subjects of the Brothers to trade freely in Russian lands, and not demand the payment of a regular tribute in peacetime.

What say you and your Brothers?

---

Dmitriy's diplomacy with European countries was conducted in Latin, through the agency of an expanded staff of genuinely educated diplomats. This affected the terminology used.

[1] The Order.

[2] Boyars.

I, Johann von Tiefen, and all the Teutonic Order, swear feudal allegiance to the Tsar of Russia. The Brothers hereby pledge to send half its army to the Tsar's campaigns at his first request.
Russian garrisons will be established in Riga, Derpt and Revel, to protect the cities from bearers of ill-intent extraneous or internal, with the help of the Brothers themselves, and the Russian fleet will be free to use the Brothers' ports as it does Russian ones.
Tariffs on Russian trade will be abolished, and Russian traders will be granted full access.
Two high-ranking Magistrates and a close male relative of the current Grandmaster will be sent to Moscow as hostages of good will.
The Brothers will desist from building military relations with the Kalmar or engaging in diplomatic or military hostilities with Poland.

In return Russia will protect the Order's territorial independence, religious freedom and allow it free access to trade in Russia*.

~ signed and sealed, Johann von Tiefen, Grandmaster of the Teutonic Order
*Does this mean no tariffs? I have signed it regardless.

PS. Looking at the most recent map I cannot see my brothers, the Hospitallers, in Malta, but Rhodes appears to be free from the Turkish yoke. They seem to share colors with the Papal state. Is this a simplification or have they become part of it?

Unfortunately, my faithful ally and brother in faith, the English would not accept any such agreement and threatened to colonize any lands they saw fit if they didn't get that island. I understand your concerns and a private audience is requested between ourselves once more old friend.

The island we refer to is not one that has been conceded to England, but the southernmost one that you attributed yourself. Thus, you shall not worry about England, but rather about your own opinion.

Spanish charts do not show it as an island, and if it isn't connected to Columbia we will ofcourse give it to Portugal. We do however feel cheated that our claims are being taken by other powers while Portuguese claims are not.

China sends her orders.

Over simplification for the game.

This is something I have just realised: Spain married Princess Isabel de Aragón to the Hungarian king, but she is still married to my king's heir, prince Afonso. Thus, this is an insult to the honor of Portugal, its King and its Prince.

(Before you complain, in here Afonso didn't die in his horse-riding accident back in 1491)

Oh my!! Somebody has to die I guess. ;)

We should definitely role-play the results of a polygamist marriage and NOT ret-con this event.
