BNH02- Thats one small step....

The peaceniks have their day

After finding out from Rik that we could make peace anytime we want to, I knew immediately what I wanted to do. I will secretly start Washington on peace time expansion asap, while delaying the actual treaty with the Germen for as long as possible. If I could get them to build one more archer that they could use to turn on Russia, then I consider that a (minor) victory.

One thing that I'm sure of, is that I want to have peace. While I could achieve a decent kill ratio against the archers with spears behind wall, there is nothing I could do against those spearmen. I think we are dragging the Germen down with us, but we are also falling further behind the other AI's, and the faster we can start catching up, the better.

Aslo, after making peace on turn 3, I shut off research on Iron Working to accumulate gold. Looking back, I think that was a :smoke: move. If we are going to buy Iron Working, then it doesn't matter if we spend the gold in researching or purchase. However, keeping the research does give us the option of getting that tech essentially for free. The next leader may have a brokering opportunity for Iron Working soon, If that does not work out, then please consider turning the research back on.

Here are the turns:

inherited turn

Enemy at the gates!

2 American spears + 1 warrior vs. 1 German Spear + 1 archer + 1 warrior. For now, there is nothing I can do except fortifying and waiting. 3 more German spear and a warrior are near our territory.

I did dial up Otto, to see if the peace deal is still on the table. As the previous general discribed, he would take all of our gold for peace. I also checked with Russians and the Chinese. Cathy was up by Wheel and Mystism over us, same as Otto, but Mao was just as backward as we were.

Turns 1 - 3

The Germen attacked Washington twice, winning with an archer, and losing with a warrior. On the third turn. One of their spear started threatening our improvements, so I paid for peace.

Washington never did finish its wall. With peace declared, the former masons were told to pack up their gears and grease up the wagon. A settler party was ordered up, due to form in 120 years :mischief: (otherwise known as 3 turns).

The scouts that were in Chinese land were ordered to turn back and go scout the Russian land. The conscript warrior managed to get within one tile of Leipzig, before he chickened out  Ahem, I mean, peace was declared. He was ordered to scout southward, finding the coast, then eventually come home for MP duty (a.k.a. drowsing the citizens with his tales of bravery).

There were bad news on the tech front though. Germany picked up IronWorking on the turn that peace was declared. I shutdown research here hoping to eventually buy IW from someone.

Our economy was in shambles due to the unit cost and the 40% lux tax made necessary by the whipping. Even with zero research, we could still manage only +2gpt.

Turns 3 - 5

All quiet on all front :)

The worker continued mining and roading the river grassland. Scouts moved west, busting as much fog as possible along the way. The conscript warrior reported a third German city next to the silks

Our first settler left home, being escorted by a spear. They were aiming for the BG rich region nex to the forrest game.

The German invaders left our soil, however, some of them walked across the land bridge to our north, maybe there is more land there than we realize?

On turn 5, China picked up Iron Working. Unfortunately, even at max gold configuration, our meager economy couldn't afford any techs :(

Also on turn 5, Germany started the Oracle in Berlin. Which, I think, is a good thing.

Turns 6 - 10

Following the settler, Washington droped down to size 2, so it built a MP warrior first, then started a granary.

On turn 8, Russia also picked up Iron Working. There will be possible 2-fer coming up, as soon as we have some money: buying Mystism from either Russia or Germany, then selling it to China for Iron Working. I'm hoping that China hasn't meet Russia yet, further increasing the value of Mystism for us. The Wheel is also available for brokering, but China, having a horse based UU, maybe researching it.

Post Log

We will probably get +5gpt from founding the city on Big's first turn. That might be enough to pull the 2-fer.

The dot map is posted below, it contains only the 1st ring cities. If we're thinking war, those are probably the only cities that we need for the Second German War :hammer: :hammer: :hammer:

If we are thinking peaceful expansion, then consider settling toward the German first.

The red arrows are the proposed worker roading route. Because of the river, taking 2 steps before crossing the river is just as efficient as taking 1, and this route brings the road closer to the northern dot.

When you have the unit to spare, checkout the land bridge to our north. There may be more land than first appeared.

The 2190 BC save

Ill get it later. This one might take me the full 48 hours, as im swammped with sgs right now. 3 of my 4 have me up right now! :) Wish me luck!

Well, this looks like an excellent SG. Good luck to you gentleman.

I would like to ask a question, though. Going back to the beginning of the game, how come you did not settle on the spot. To me, it looked like a great place to start an empire.

We would not have been on the coast, keeping our trade with the other continent at an early halt.

Got it will have it for tomorrow morning.

Ok. We have situations here.
We are down 3 visible techs. (to germany and russia. China lacks Mysticism.)
Pulling in 3 gpt, even though when we settle our new city, Boston, we'll be getting 8gpt, i dont see many options. If we research, we would need someway to get to Alphabet first, which is unlikely. So lets look at our options...

1.) Set research at a min run to alpha, hoping that we can get it cheap and trade to other 2 civs.
2.) Build up a massive Archer fleet and attack Germany and pray. (Highly Unlikely)
3.) Try to get the other civs to war each other after we pull in writing.
4.) We can turn our research off completly, and just buy techs for a long time, with a huge GL prebuild.
5.) Or we can even scrap this game and go with a new one. (Not really in favor of this one)

So, before I play, I need feedback. I need something from all of you. Let me say, this isnt my strong suit! :) <-- A very nervous smile

That would take a pretty large prebuild. But, it could work

With the early war, this game became a lot harder, but it is not lost yet. Right now, I think its difficulty level is somewhere between DG and Deity. If we play this game like a Deity game, by MM each city each turn through the Ancient Ages, and checking diplomacy every turn, I'm confident that we can win.

All of the strategies that BigNHuge outlined can work, and I don't think we have to decide on any of them right now. The first order of business is to expand, expand and expand. Which path we end up chosing might be forced upon us by the game situation already.

If we have iron or horse, then I'd like to :hammer: . It fits with what has already happened in this game. And yes, I think Berlin will one day be renamed "New York" :) .

If we can grab enough territory (possible because Germany's capital is building wonder for the next 500 years), then we can safely delay the German conquest until we are more ready. If we could build the GL, then we'll have no more tech worries. Better yet, if we could run a curragh across to the other continent, then we won't even need the GL to keep up in tech.

So, don't worry Big, take it away.

About the tech situation, my choice is to trade for Myst and IW ASAP, then start a min run on either Poly or Math. I think we can't afford to wait for 50 turn to get Alphabet. The AI will probably get it before 50 turns. What do you think?

My problem with the starting tile is that it has 6 water tiles within its native 21 and has no coastal access, meaning that those 6 tiles will never be improved at all. Those tiles will forever produce only 1 food per turn, therefore working them will actually be a burden on the other land tiles, meaning that I'll have to irrigate more grasslands than I needed to, cutting into the city's production as well.

In a far away city where most of production and commerce are eaten up by corruption, this may not matter much. But having almost 1/3rd of my capital's tiles being unproductive definitely hurts.

Alright, ill play today. Later today. Got a poker tournament.

Umm. Some problems with the save here. I cant seem to get the game loaded, no matter how many times i re dl it. All my other games are working. Need a trade of turns. jb, Can we trade this round? Im still trying to tinker with it to get it to work but it just wont. Probably my sorry excuse for a comp. it needs that ol' :hammer: Thx for waiting all.

P.S.- I had it dled before and opened no problems for a first look. I went through and all other dls in the game worked perfect. This is just bull. -> :aargh: -> [pissed] -> :suicide: .

I'll play BNH01 first and then hit this one if BnH hasn't been able to get the save to work properly.

I have attached the save to see if that will help.

No, it doesnt help. I wonder what is up!!!!!!! This is beginning to make me extremly :pissed:. jb, I need you to save me before i do a little :hammer: to my comp.

It is working now!!!!!!!!!!! :) [dance] :band:[party] :goodjob: ;) :D Unless jb has started already, id love to take it!

I'm swamped w/ BNH01. You have to take it or it's gonna sit there for some time. :)

i have company now so it will have to wait until tomorrow.
