BNH02- Thats one small step....

I though F15 has lethal bombardment. I could be wrong. I need to check with the editor to be sure.

In any case, we'll get a GA with the internet, but it would be much cooler to do it with a F15.

On a side question, may be America should reach its golden age with the Internet? Come to think of it, Al Gore did invent the darn thing ;) .

Turn 0 – 1550 AD
France is two turns into researching something.
Russia is now of no use to us other than triggering a GA.
Japan is simply a supplier of luxuries.
All cities are quite or moderately happy and flip risk is low.

IBT: Russia is down to two cities thanks to France. Japan sails a few dozen ships around the map. Russia foolishly sails destroyers past wounded Japanese destroyers as if they’re actually going to have whatever’s on that transport to make a bit of difference.
The stinking French are building the Internet and we lost our supply of furs.

Turn 1 – 1555 AD
France has Miniaturization (I figured that out from the Internet thing) they had to have been further into their research than 2 turns. Our Palace pre-build should still get us the Internet before the French.
To boost our production I’m going to pick a fight w/ the Russians before we lose the opportunity.
Catherine won’t give us a tech so we declare her scum.
This new war with Cthaerine has not endeared us to Joan. She's furious. Toku's in a poor mood as well.
We split up the F15’s between cities that can be reached by Russian bombers and will bomb (provoke) with one next turn.
Mass production to the Japanese for furs, 14g and 7gpt.

IBT: Crap! We have civil disorder all over the place thanks to immediate WW. Catherine must die. Catherine bombs in Frankfurt because she seems to know that the F15 have just been ferried there and have yet to be put on air cover. The AI cheats.

Turn 2 – 1560 AD
Out of two bombing runs on the two Russian cities we get an F15 shot out of the air by another jet fighter. (After my turns I discovered that F15's on bombing runs can turn the tables on an interceptor and blow it away.)

IBT: Now that our F15's are set to air superiority in Frankfurt the Russians decide not to bomb this turn. The AI cheats!

Turn 3 – 1565 AD
I accidentally draft a citizen in San Francisco trying to change the build order. We now have a 2hp Mech Infantry.

Tampa and Shantung are in poor moods. We hire civil engineers.
Pollution cleaned up.
France wants a two-fer lux deal if we want her spices. Nope. Blow your own scratch on entertainment.

IBT: Japan moves about 20 ships.
Miniaturization comes in and we set our sites on Nuclear Power in 11 turns running a 46gpt deficit.
Again, Catherine stays out of our skies because she knows we have F15’s up. That totally blows.

Turn 4 – 1570 AD
OK, we need to find Catherine’s troops so we can bombard them to DEATH!
We actually manage to plant a spy and steal her military plans!
Russia has three destroyers and a transport carrying a single TOW infantry off the southern coast of France. We’ll keep our eyes open for them to come in range.
Of the 12 bombing runs on a ToW, on open ground, we get two F15’s shot down and inflict only two hits on the veteran unit. One of our F15's is shot down by a prop-job. Again, that blows. :vomit:
Orlando and "Dallas Strikes" need an attitude adjustment.

IBT: The Japanese land troops on the Russian lands. The Russians move their troops closer to our lands to the East. We now have our best target for a GA.

Turn 5 – 1575 AD
We re-base the F15’s except for a few to keep running air superiority. The moment we pull out all the F15's from Franfurt and nearby cities, is the exact moment that the Russians start bombing again.
Internet in 7 turns. Nuclear Power in 10 turns.

IBT: Japanese run guerillas and infantry at Russian ToWs in Novosibirsk. They go down like carrots in a food processor.
The Russians drop off their ToW on our island to the East. We paint a big bullseye on this guy's back.

Turn 6 – 1580 AD
Nothing but bombing the ToW. We manage two hits.
Internet in 6 turns. Nuclear Power in 9 turns.

IBT: The wounded ToW attacks our infantry and dies. Moron! You were supposed to trigger our GA!

Turn 7 – 1585 AD
Well this time our F15’s hit the stack of ships and hit them hard. We sink all three destroyers and enter our Golden Age! [dance]
I’m still not sure if it was worth the trouble.
Time to ship our armies across the water to kill off Catherine.
Two infantry and a tank army will take care of our future WW. We ship them out without an escourt given that we have sunk every one of her ships.

No happiness problems.
France has still not produced another tech.

Washington is now pumping out 100spt for the next 20 turns!
The Internet will be done in 3 turns, 2 turns earlier than thought.
Nuclear Power drops to 5 turns from what would have been 8 turns.
It was worth the trouble. :D
We found Bloomsberg.

IBT: The Russians bomb our troops.

Turn 8 – 1590 AD
Washington is now up to 120spt w/ a commercial dock.
Our tank army kills off a ToW while the transport heads back to the mainland to pick up a second army. Our beat up Tank army is covered by two infantry. A mobile SAM would have been a nice addition.
An F15 sinks the Russian transport. That is truely the last of the Russian fleet.

IBT: The first time in many turns I forget to check the mood of the people and I get what I deserve. Riots all over the place. Let’s see if Catherine will talk. Nope.

Turn 9 – 1595 AD
Our bombing runs are a huge failure.
We swap out our 1hp army for a 13 hp army.

IBT: Japan’s bringing in an aircraft carrier.
The Internet comes in! :scan: :borg:
Russia bombs our transport sinking it and the wounded army. Again, I doubt the AI even needed to scout that tile before sending our transport to the bottom. The AI cheats.
I never saw France cascade to another wonder. Since they have all the same techs as us I think the just bought an expensive city improvement.

Turn 10 – 1600 AD
With a combination of bombing and our army we take Novosibirsk. We keep the city with a single citizen and it’s a 1.2% flip risk according to MapStat. Let’s see if Catherine wants to talk about the fate of her last city. Nope. She must be too busy pleasuring herself in the stables.

Joan has yet to discover anything new so she's been researching for 8/9 turns with nothing to show for it as of yet.

There’s a settler and Mobile SAM unit in Frankfurt that the next leader may want to ship over to the island to our West. The settler could be placed to grab one of those whales and the mobile SAM may com in handy if Catherine stays around long enough to keep making runs on our trooops.

Given that 4 workers can clean up pollution in grasslands I didn't bother setting any build orders to Mass Transit.

We have a palace pre-build collecting sheilds in NY.

With all the improvements in Washington the coast and sea sqare are very productive so she gives up grassland tiles to Philly and alternately Philly gives a grassland to Atlanta.

Atlanta can support a few more population but is growing very slowly so we join two workers.

Workers have been moved, and forted, outside of Washington.

Feel free to kill Russia.

Turn 0 1600 AD

MM Cities, hire some scientist in corrupt chinese cities and lower science another notch.

I can lower lux another notch as well, and hire a few more specialists.

IBT: Russian bombers destroy the harbor in our captured city.

Turn 1 1605 AD

We lost 3 F15's bombarding the russians. We did hurt both of their bombers.

Rush the temple in the captured city.

Turn 2 1610 AD

We have Nuclear Power, research is set to Space Flight, due in 4 at -376gpt.

Checking Joanie... What?! She has both Synthetic Fibers and Space Flight. How is that possible? I'm betting that Russia has researched one of those techs, and France got it from them. So I'm going to shut down research for 2 turns, to get some gold for a steal against the Russians. Meanwhile research is set on Laser.

Washington, Miami and Chicago starts on Nuclear Plant. The palace in New York is slowed down to 10 turns, so that I would still have time to self research Space Flight in time for the pre-build.

Ship over a slave worker to build an air field on the russian island. Rebase the F15's there.

Turn 3 1615 AD

Washington finishes its Nuke Plant, reaches 150spt.

Russia will talk. They do have Synthetic Fibers, and is willing to trade it for Miniaturization. We make peace.

Joanie is researching Nuclear Power, and fast. She would not trade Space Flight for Nuke Power (It was possible last turn). So I'm going to research Laser now, and trade Laser for Space Flight 4 turns from now.

Renew the Ivory deal with Japan for Atomic Theory.

Turn 4 1620 AD

Cities that finished its Nuke Plants are put on wealth.

Turn 5 1625 AD

Joanie may not be researching Nuclear Power after all, Nuke Power for Space Flight is still a "close to deal".

Turn 6 1630 AD

The captured Russian city flipped. We lost 2 infantries and 4 Flaks in the flip. Because of the RoP that I signed in the peace treaty with the Russians, our tanks armies are "guarding" the door steps of that city.

I can't wait for Joanie anymore. I renegociate peace with France, buying Space Flight for Nuclear Power and 115gpt.

The Palace in New York is switched to Apollo Program, wasting 96 shields.

Every wealth city is switched to some kind of pre-build.

Changes enough specialist to scientist to lower science to 70%.

IBT: Japan lands a tone of troops on the Russian island.

Turn 7 1635 AD

Laser comes in as scheduled, Robotics is next, due in 4 turns at -523gpt.

Apollos is done. I go into the F1 screen and list our cities by their production
- Washington starts the most expensive part -- Exerior Casing, due in 4.
- Miami is next at 117spt, it starts the Engine, due in 5.
- Boston has 115 spt, it will finish the Cockpit in 2 turns.
- The other 3 available SS parts are all very cheap, so Chicago at extactly 100spt starts a palace pre-build.
- New York at 80spt will start the Planetary Party Lounge.
- Houston will do the Storage/Supply.
- Philadelphia builds the Docking Bay.
- San Francisico stays on Tactical Nuke.

We have just 3 more Space Race teches left, so there are no more than 20 turns left in the game. Out in the corrupt regions, infrastrutures and growth take a back seat to food and specialist.

IBT: Our army on the Russian island is getting bombarded by bombers, but no war is declared.
One heroic Russian ToW Infantry held off half of Japan's stack, the other half pillages or fortifies.

Turn 8 1640 AD

What's wrong with this picture, it's our army and the Russian fighter, on the same tile.
BNH02-1640AD.jpg

IBT: There is definitely a bug here. The Japanese attack and kill our tank army that's on top of the Russian Air Field, without declaring war. Their cavs then finish off our Flaks on the same tile, and destroy the Russian jet fighter that's in the airfield.

Turn 9 1645 AD

4 SS parts finish this turn. Those cities are placed on wealth.

Our remaining tank army is coming home.

IBT: Japan takes that Russian city.

Turn 10 1650 AD

1 turn left on Robotics, science can be lowered to 90%.

I'm pretty sure I have MM'ed the cities to max research. I'm leaving it up to Rik to change the right number of scientist to taxmen this turn, then change them back to scientist next turn :p .

Remember to renew the lux deal with Japan next turn, and good luck.

Rik will have 7 more turns of GA to play with. We can research in 4 turns during our GA, so that mean we'll have exactly half a tech left when the GA is over. I predict that we'll win on the Rik's 11th turn, when we scroll ahead to finish off the last SS part :D .

Now let's see how accurate I am.

Most kewl!

@SJFrank
When I played beyond the end of my turns I was also very surprised to find that Joan had suddenly jumped two techs. Since I went ahead and killed the Russians and forgotten that we turned off SGL’s I thought Joan had drawn one.

Also, great MM’ing. I’m still not used to being able to make a bit of difference w/ scientists beyond a minimum run at a tech. Pulling down the costs of research and entertainment at the cost of infrastructure in our corrupt regions we a great move.

@Rik, if you really do manage to pull within a turn of ending this then pull the trigger and post a nice screenshot of the victory.

About the only thing that could disrupt us now would be France either building the ship first or declaring war. Since the AI can’t effectively pre-build I think there’s about a zero chance of losing the space race. And, given that the AI sucks at amphibious assault I doubt war would slow us down either.

Short of France dropping nukes it would appear that this game is in the bag. This will certainly be the best victory I have ever shared or had including BNH01. To go from our last warrior quaking in his animal-skin boots to any sort of victory is impressive.

Well done. And as I predicted on page 1, thanks for carrying me. It’s been an education.

IHT: Find the exact amount of taxmen and scientist to get Robotics in 1 and make +35 gpt. I take 5 more scientist to counter if any pollution comes up.

IBT: We learn Robotics. Research to Superconductor (in GA 4 turns).
1 part finishes.
We loose our furs.

[1] 1655 AD - France has Supercoductor. So i switch to Sat, so we can trade or steal. Switch Chicago to Statis Chamber. Boston to palace prebuild. We need more lux, so I buy French Spices + Furs for our Dyes + Incense + silks + Gems. Fortify all units. Sci to 80%; making +404 gpt.

IBT:
2 parts finish. Heavy pollution.

[2] 1660 AD - Switch to max research possible, while maintaining a positive gpt. I want as much shields in the box for when our GA ends. We have more gold than needed for a diplo-steal.

[3] 1655 AD - Automate workers for pollution cleaning.

[4] 1670 AD - Satellites in 1. Set science low, +1464 gpt.

IBT: we learn sattellites. Supercoductor selected.

[5] 1675 AD - Sell France The Laser + Sattelites for Supercoductor + WM + 20 gpt + 1360 gold. France still lacks Robotics. We have all techs now. go 50% lux, 50% tax. 3 SS parts ready in 3 turns. Merge some workers -> all parts ready in 2 turns. Still in our GA.

IBT: Russia is destroyed by the Japanese. Lot's of WLTKD.

[6] 1680 AD - MM all cities so that all have happy people or specialists. Then move lux slider to 100%.

Still in our golden age (although the screenie doesn't show it):

And the T-1 save

 :band: :hatsoff:

Congrats to the team on a very well played game, and a very satisfying win.

Too bad BigNHuge isn't here to enjoy the victory, it is his game after all.

A few tid bits about the game, now that it is over.

SJ Frank said:
I've downloaded the save. It looks like whom ever takes the game next should whip the wall in Washington ASAP. We will have a spear and a warrior in the city, against 3 German archers. I'd say the odds are 50/50 :help: .

That was what I wrote after the Germans burned New York and marched on Washington. That night, I played a couple of shadow turns, where I whipped the wall in Washington, and guess what -- we would have lost. Yep, in my HoF, there is a demi-god loss entry under the Americans.

This was before Rik took his turns. So I couldn't say or do anything, except making myself mentally prepared for Rik to come back, report a short turn set and a loss.

Well, Rik made some great analysis, found out that whipping a spear was better than the wall, and guided our civ though her darkest hours. The rest, as they say, is history.

When Russia sneak attacked and burnt Dallas, I though we were going to be dealing with tons of Russian units, but in reality there were nothing but trickles. What happened? Russia had been at peace for a while, why weren't they building units?

The other day, while fidgeting around in the editor, I found this:
BNH02-Russia-Editor.jpg

Russia does not have any land units checked. This is unusuall, because the AIs are usually set to build units that are the same type as their UU.

The check marks do have pretty dramatic effect. By the end of the game, when Russia was down to a tundra 1CC, they had the following military units:
- infantry x 2
- ToW x 2
- fighter
- jet fighter
- bomber x 2
- and I think, a carrier :crazyeye:

I think, that the lack of land unit priorities on the part of Russia is partly responsible for us surviving in this game.

I never realised the Russian production thingy. But still; I think we'd be able to hold on.

About Washington and Germany: We had fewer defenders than attackers, so I had to calculate the odds for our survival. In those hard moments you must explore all options and take the best option.
I was thaught this game (for the higher levels) by Sulla; 1 of the few "wizard" class players. With wizard I mean that everything they do is game winning. I consider it a class higher than "world-class" player.
His motto was, and still is: "What can wait should wait"
This means also that what cannot wait must not wait. The wall could wait. The spear couldn't.
