Just bought the game and it will not install and freezes up on first disk. Never had any issues before with games or game loading. I tried 2 separate computers, the first one runs XP the other Vista but it freezes up in same spot on either PC. I updated all my video and DX files and ran defrag, any suggestions would be appreciated.

This is the error I get.

Feature: Default Feature
Component Civ4Component
File: F:\data2.cab
Error Incorrect Function

Then just kicked me out of install mode

I am having a similar problem.

I am running Windows 7 64 bit, as an upgrade from Vista.

I am trying to install Civ 4 (basic, no patches etc) from the CDs. First one reads fine, I get to the part about needing disk 2. I insert disk 2 and press OK, and I get the message "Setup.exe has stopped working".

I tried looking at Disk 2 and I see one Cabinet file labeled "data3". I tried copying that to a folder on my Desktop and browsing to it at the "need disk 2" step - same error message.

The install thus fails - and incidentally does not populate the Windows 7 uninstall programs menu to clean it up afterward.

If I put the first disk in again, it tries to start the game; if I choose "play" it throws "MSVCR71.dll missing" and exits.

I did as you suggested... Here are the results...

Setup gets to the section loading the movie for the wonder "United Nations" then throws error -5011:0y8000fff and hangs. Error message says "make sure you finish previous set up" - very helpful, that.

I need to clean something left in my registry by previous failed install attempts or something?

More details -

The error "details" sections gives -

Error Code: -5011 : 0x8000ffff
Error Information:
>Kernel\ObjectWrapper.cpp (498)
>Kernel\IScriptWrapper.cpp (81)
>Kernel\ObjectWrapper.cpp (197)
>Kernel\IScriptWrapper.cpp (81)
>SetupNew\SetupDLL.cpp (510)

$12.0.0.49974
@Windows XP (7600) IE 8.0.7600.16385

This happens even after a reboot, so it is not a matter of currently running programs, though it may well result from registry settings left by previous crashed installs that haven't been removed. Crash always happens at the file -

...\Assets\Art\Movies\Wonders\UnitedNations.bik

--- if that helps...

There is then an additional dialog as Setup.exe is failing and exiting, that has its own details section, as follows -

Also, if it matters, I can install Civ IV:Colonization fine and play it, so system specs aren't the issue...
