Brave New World's 9 new Civs

So... Considering Italy is hinted within the Achievements as part of the Scramble for Africa Scenario... Would'nt it be odd if they actuall were a new civ? I mean, they go through so much for hiding all, and they just slip one in the Achievements list for everyone?

They technically didn't give it away, if it is in - the only certainty is that they gave away that Italy was in the scenario, which is no surprise to anyone. What is less certain is whether the wording choice for the Italian achievement was deliberate because Italy is in or not.

Pretend there was an area between Assyria and Brazil on the achievement list. And Belgium was confirmed it would be in the scenario. Would y'all assume Belgium is a civilization?

No, because the wording for Belgium wouldn't suggest so. Italy's wording is similar to England's and not Belgium's, which suggest that, like England, the achievement was wording to suggest it applied to only Italy in the scenario and not in the normal game, thus implying that Italy is a normal civ like England. Contrast that to Belgium where this subtle distinction - if it is a subtle distinction - does not exist. If it were Belgium that had this wording, and not Italy, then we could assume, yes, that Belgium is a civilization.

Again, it's not 100% certain, but I think it presents a decent case.

The wording of the scenario is just another piece of evidence that indicates an Italian civ - It's by no means conclusive evidence and very much open to interpretation but it is circumstantial evidence. Compared to say Indonesia or Vietnam which both have no evidence - our only real reason from assuming those is no Asian civ inclusion would feel odd and those two civs have the strongest support from our small fanbase and that we have yet to see either of their cities repped as CS's this time out. In Italy's case there are a lot of little circumstantial pieces of evidence that have built up to the point where most of us feel that they are probably in as a civ in some form (there are still a significant number of Venice proponents who point out that it could be renamed Italy for the scenario)

I'm expecting Firaxis to show the silhouette of the next leader, either this week or the next.

I was watching one of the preview videos and one of the developers was telling the audience to look more deep into the new poster (with the x-com). If the kasbah was found on that poster then I can assume it's pretty much a confirmation of Morocco.

Something I realized while looking at the achievements thread:

-"Discoverer - Playing as Italy in Scramble for Africa, earn the VP for finding two Natural Wonders."

They make sure to specify that you must play as Italy IN the scenario, something that wouldn't make any sense if they were a scenario-only civ.

Also:

-"Dr Livingstone I presume? - Playing as Belgium, move your Stanley Explorer to within a tile of England’s Livingstone Explorer."

Belgium as a scenaro-civ confirmed?

EDIT: I haven't read the last 30 pages, so I'm sorry if some one has already said this.

Welcome back. You've missed rampant speculation about achievements that has stepped into the realms of supposition around Italy

I fixed that for you. :)

What's SFA?

Scramble for Africa i presume. I don't know what he missed about it though. The only real news we got came in the form of the cultural victory trailer, and there wasn't much new in it. But on the plus side, there's not long to wait now :D

I wrote this in the thread that got closed and I'm not sure if you guys already figured this out, but since we found out the achievements for each new civ are alphabetical and there's only two unknown civs between Brazil (B) and Portugal (P) and since Italy and Morocco are basically confirmed (as far as I'm concerned), then what civs does that cancel out that we thought were strong candidates (civs that start with A-P).

If you read why it was closed its because that discovery was figured out very quickly and discussed in great detail without needing to make a new thread about it.

Yes, I think we're all treating the alphabetical order theory as a given, which eliminates the likes of Australia, Belgium, etc. and casts doubt over Indonesia. Even the possibility that the alphabetical order could treat Civs whose names start with 'the' as starting with T has been debunked.

We're just going round in circles until the next Civ is revealed - which, fingers crossed, will happen this week (although I'd expect it to be Thursday or Friday).

On the discussion of Italy: how many new city-states have been added? There are five Italian city-states (Venice, Genoa, Florence, Milan, and Ragusa). Have five or more been added?

I always took Ragusa to be the one in Croatia. I don't think they'd drop that one even if they did add Italy.

Excellent point. I remember Ragusa from the Venetian Republic, not Italy.

Anyway, we also have to count the three removed for Portugal, Brazil, and Poland.

Ur, Sofia, Riga, Panama City, Kongo, Vilnius, and Bratislava - Rio, Lisbon, Warsaw, Milan, Venice, Genoa and Florence.

edit: Vilnius is Poland, never mind. Civwikia has Dubai as a confirmed city-state but I wouldn't trust that.

2 of the new city-states are militaristic. None of the Italian city-states are. So not all of the Italian cities have been directly replaced yet.

cultural out:
Warsaw
(Florence)
(Milan)

Cultural in:
Bratislava

Mercantile out:
(Genoa)
(Marrakech)

Mercantile in:
none yet

Militaristic out:
none yet

Militaristic in:
Sofia
M'Banza-Kongo

Maritime out:
Venice
Lisbon
Rio De Janiero

Maritime in:
Riga
Ur
Panama City

It's hard to derive much from that data set. We don't know if they are keeping the ratios between types the same or quantities the same. If we assume that the quantity is not increasing and the ratio is staying the same, then we need 2 more new cultural city-states, 2 new mercantile city-states, and the removal of 2 old militaristic city-states.

I would be very surprised if they were keeping the total quantity the same.
