British Isles

Hi,
This looks like a great mod. I've downloaded all four components and tried loading the mod, but I'm getting the error: "GFC Error: failed to initialize the primary control theme" and then a CTD.

Here is how I installed everything, tell me if I put anything in the wrong place:

- Britannia.rar - put this in the mods folder in My Documents\My Games
- movie.rar - within WinRar, I navigated in the folder structure and pulled out the movies folder. I put this in: My Games\Beyond the Sword\MODS\Britannia\Assets\Art
- sounds.rar - within WinRar, I navigated in the folder structure and pulled out the Sounds solder. I put this in: My Games\Beyond the Sword\MODS\Britannia\Assets
- XML.rar - I pulled the XML folder out and put it here: My Games\Beyond the Sword\MODS\Britannia\Assets

What do you think the problem would be?

It's 317. I didn't realize that I didn't install the new patch. I'm going to download the update and see if that fixes the problem.

My Documents\My Games

That's wrong, the mod has to go in C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Civilization 4\Beyond The Sword\Mods (if you've installed civ in another place, then put it there). This is also the reason for the error.

Thanks The_J and americo. I put the mod in Program Files and also took out the XML file because I'm running 3.17 and having problems installing the update.

Hmmmm... spoke to soon. The mod will load, but when I play the scenarios right after the Dawn of Man screen I get a message that I've been defeated. The screen with the map that comes up afterward summarizing the game's events is just a blank map with no turns played and no cities established.

sorry, but megaupload is not a good option

Does this mod work at this time? It looks interesting. I've downloaded and placed in the mods folder (less sounds because of freakn megaupload) and get a GFC error when loading. By the way, the extract files do not appear to be set up properly - have to manual place in the movie files.

I'll keep an eye on this for updates, but it doesn't appear the mod is ready for primetime.

edit: Sorry, I just noticed the additional patch file. I will download and try the game out once mega-freakn-upload allows me to download a 1MB file

hey americo -

Okay, I was able to get the mod to work. I tried out several turns on a couple of Scenarios. I'm really interested in Welsh based scenarios since I love to play as them, so I tried out Wales and Roman scenarios. Below are a few observations, suggestions and questions based on what brief experience:

1) Overall, I like the look and feel of the mod. I love historical (Classical and Medieval) settings in CIV. I hope that with CIV that provide regular game options to limit the time period, i.e., stop at Medieval with it's on tech tree.

2) The unit graphics look very nice. As you fine tune your mod you may want to look into more specific units for each civ. For instance, I'm not sure if the Gallic warrior is great for Wales, although the guerrilla promo is certainly apt. There are other unique warriors for Wales.

3) The "invisible to all units" trait of the Welsh Longbowman is interesting but problematic. I do like the stealth aspect of the unit, but it defeats the primary strength of a longbowman which is defending cities or stacks. The English attacked one city and completely ignore the longbowman. Hmmm...not sure what to do here as each civ needs a strong city defender. Maybe provide the Welsh with to types of longbowman. The Saethwyr can be main UU and then another unit for more general purposes to a longbowman. (Also interested in your take on the invisible warrior unit - what was your intent with this one. Is there no counter to this unit. It could be fun but it is limited)

4) Invasion of Wales scenario:
-Welsh seem to start at a significant disadvantage in this scenario. English basically came right in with a huge stack and started to take over cities (the longbowman were of no use). I realize the Welsh will be the underdogs, but they start at war with 3 civs and have no allies yet - though Scotland appears to be someone to work on. Maybe need more lead time to prep for battle
-Are your scenarios meant to be played on Marathon? No problem - just want to know what is optimal and balanced.
- The production in Cardiff seemed disproportionate to the actual hammers worked. I couldn't figure out this was happening - buildings, bonuses, etc. Is the city coded by you to have high production. I'm cool with that but just curious.
- Barbarian cities undefended but could not take them over. I tried sending a longbowman up to the nearby barb island - nothing happened. ?????

5) I'm interested in what other mods are incorporated in this mod. Looks like Thomas War and Next War. I recommend including BUG or BUFFY to enhance the overall experience without changing gameplay.

6) Why the futuristic tech tree? I'd like to see techs that stick more to the era. I see things like clones in there.

7) I think the scenarios are missing a preview to set up the player. Maybe some text or a movie with some history to introduce us to what we're in for and to outline goals.

8) In addition, do you have something that explains the concepts of your mod - new techs, religions, wonders, etc. I realize that there are some civlopedia entries in there but something that pulls them together as a whole so we understand the game. I realize that you may not have gotten to all this yet.

9) Also, a more in depth overview of the changes/features of the mod.

Overall, I just want to note that I think this mod has a lot of potential. I think there are quite of few people out their looking for period specific type CIV games.

i really thank you for the review, i'll take treasure of your advice when i'll update the mod, i'm waiting other reviews
for the future tech three, the scenarios are not time stopped

ugh, this mod is a mess... this game lags a lot, Fonts is too big and cover up most of the unit txts and other stuff, and not only that... but I crashed on a custom game as Ireland, got the gael religion and when I try to settle on my third city! BAM! crash.... i've uninstall this game and let the rats eat this mod up.

This mod looks really good, but I think I'll wait until you update it to fix some of the problems before I download.

Oh, and americo, if you see someone flaming, you can report the post because it's not allowed.

thanks for the advice saiko, by the way download the game and tell me what's wrong with this mod

Okay, I guess if it helps to let you know some of the problems...

By the way, I'm downloading it now, and I think that you should use another website to post your files. My antivirus scan tells me MegaUpload has spyware and crap. But anyway...yeah, I'll let you know about anything wrong when I play it. :)

I was goin 2 create somthing very similar 2 this, but i guess u saved me alot of time. thx!

I was about to suggest Offa as a welsh leader since half the things around the borer are named after him, but looking now apparently he was a Mercian keeping the welsh in not a Welsh keeping the rest out. Maybe I’m not as good a Welshman as I though. I sill think Offa's dyke would be a grate early version of the grait wall though especly if its posible to use the Dun modal with it.

And yes please to Owain Glyn Dŵr, since I'm named after him (though my parents soon gave up and changed to the English spelling.)

So, ignore people who can't spell Owain and just keep correcting them :P
