[BTS] 43 Religions

For Japan I suppose you could use Kami for the folk beliefs. It's not 100% accurate but it's not bad either.

In terms of Chinese religion there are organized religions for both Daoism and Buddhism that people to belong to which are fairly syncretic, but then there are the folk beliefs which are extremely syncretic. So I think it makes sense to have one Chinese folk practice and then differentiated religions.

Hope this helps

"Shaivism is the branch of Sanataan Dharma that views Shiva as the foremost god. The symbols of Shiva are the lingam, the symbol displayed for this religion that is worshipped as an image of Shiva, and vibhutis which is ash smeared in three lines on the forehead worn to show devotion to Shiva. The Holy Texts vary from denomination to denomination of Shaivism but some of the more famous include the Shiva Sutras of Vasugupta and the Tantraloka. Shaivite practices vary from area to area but the overall goal of Shaivism is to attain oneness with Shiva, as he is viewed as both the foremost god and Supreme Reality. Kasmiri Shaivism is arguably the most famous branch outside of India, it was shrouded in secrecy and passed by word of mouth from person to person for generations until Swami Lakshman Joo Raina published the Kashmiri Shaivite teachings throughout the world. Pashupata Shaivism is the oldest Shaivism school. The exact age of the group is debated, but most scholars agree they existed around the First century CE or the Second. They were ascetics, much like Shiva himself, and practiced bhakti yoga, or the path of attaining oneness with god through devotion. Other schools include Shaiva Siddhanta and Lingayatism."

I don't think pictures would be a good idea in a Civilopedia entry, but here are some I like:

This is the major classes I plan to group the religions in. These can change with suggestions. I want to make them broad enough so I can separate the religions into divisions.

Jewsih
Christian
Islamic
Hindu
Buddhist
Iranian
Taoist(maybe better name needed) (post-Confucian religions)
African
European
Mediterranean
Asian
American
Other

Let me know if you think otherwise. This is just groups not religions.

I'd rather it be this:

Abrahamic (Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Bahai, Mormon, etc.)
Dharmic (Vedantism [Hinduism], Buddhism, Sikhism etc.)
Chinese (Taoism came first, Confucianism should be in that category)
Pagan (Indigenous beliefs, pre-Abraham Middle Eastern beliefs etc.)

:goodjob:

I don't conisder the Iranian religions different, I think you are confusing Iranian indigenous pagan beliefs with Zoroastrianism or Mazdianism.

Buddhism is called "Buddha Dharma" and is never called "Buddhism" except by westerners. I can't think of any reason to refer to it otherwise.

Chinese is better. Confucianism is not Taoism, Taoism is not Confucianism.

How you will do the buildings? The Greek World mod for vanilla have some buildings for Zoroastrianism, but when it comes to Classical Polytheism it uses the same graphics for the Parthenon and Oracle, for example.
I asking this to you because I was putting these two religions in my own mod, and dont find graphics for the buildings. Theres four types of buildings: temple, cathedral, monastery and shrine.
My idea, now, is to have only a temple for Classical Polytheism (using the graphic for the mars altar found in the SPQR mod, which is a modified version of the taoist temple), and put this religion as a requirement to build the Parthenon and Oracle wonders. The same can be done with the Pyramids, with Astronomical Polytheism as a requirement.
I also want to put Druidism, but the druids dont had temples. Instead they made rituals in the open, in stone circles. Maybe turn it a requirement to build the Stonehenge?

wheres pastafarianism?

I like most of these. Scientology is largely considered a corporation, and not a religion---I would suggest striking it from the list, or including it as a corporation, after altering the name some.

There are quite a few heretical versions of christianity, arianism being just one.

Stoicism
Atheism
Candomblé
Pastafarianism(for a joke)
Secular Humanism
Scientology
Deism
Arian
(some other Jewish denomination)

Try to stick to reality, not to the personal views of the posters (including me) here.

If u add Mormons, u can add Jehova's Witnesses and Tele-evangelism too.

 Another one to add to the Corporations lists.

wheres pastafarianism?

It's in my stomach! (eating pasta as I type)

Here are some the philosophies I am thinking. I am posting this here to get input. This is some brainstorming ideas.
I think you need to go over some of the 'philosophies' carefully. For instance I'd classify Ghost Dance as a kind of religious revivalism of the native shaman traditions. Perhaps it was a synthetic one (merging older traditional tribal religions into one)? Is it a really a philosophy in the classical sense---bunch of wise man sitting around trading ideas and generating a school of thought?
But then again some early philosophies become embroiled in mysticism and become semi-religious, like platonism and Pythagoras, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pythagoreanism

I'd also vote for expanding the sects of Judaism, since historically there were several. Significant religious ones from time of Josephus: Pharisees, Sadducees, Essenes, and early Christians (prior to it diverging and forming holy cities away from Jerusalem).

I'd also vote for making this mod as comprehensive as possible, AND plug and play. So just throw all the ideas in, branched under logical blocks (perhaps even redundantly moduled), and let the modder plug in X (x=7?) or so modules at a time. So if I want a SE Asian mod, I can plug in all the Buddhist ideologies I want, whereas if I want a European Wars of Religion, or a 21th C. North American post-apocalypse mod, I can plug in blocks of religions relevant.
