Bugs3 - The Sid Virgin Sacrifice

850AD, turn 0:
Spend time looking at situation..
netherland and egypt is at war, except from that the world is at peace..

we appear to be number 2 on powergraph, number 3 in pop, and 4th in land area

I see a portugese galleon, so they are up atleast 2 techs.. thou they havent started Newtons yet so unlikely they have ToG

Our forces are not in right area to be able to handle a portugese war atm, they have to be shipped there.

Portugal has no native iron, and in addition to us only egypt and rome has 2 irons.. they are not trading with egypt, so rome must be supplying their iron.
The portugese saltpeter source is the city we fist took from aztecs.. take out that town plus get rome and egypt into war with them and they only fast unit they can build will be horsemen untill tanks.

We are still paying portugal for RoP.. cancel that.

move units towards portugal.

IBT:
nothing

860AD, turn 1:
more unit movements.

I want to load up units on hill inside roman territory right next to portugese salt town, so i give rome WM for RoP.

I see portugese rifle in tlaxcala, so they have MT now.

870AD, turn 2:
troop movements

880AD, turn 3:
troop movements
portugese has lots of boats.. I want to get as many troops over as possible before war

890AD, turn 4:
more movement.. soon in position

no immediate need for rushing much, so attempt an immediate steal from portugal.. and it succeed
take physics

persia and dutch has magnestism, portugal and rome has ToG aswell

IBT:
portugal complete shakespeares in lisbon.. that is one sweet town.. it has more than half the wonders in the world..

900AD, turn 5:
just noticed that the pike fortified outside lutetia is portugese.. always thought it was ours :D .. should not be hard to get into war.. prolly just need to tell them to leave :p

910AD, turn 6:
load the empty army with 3 cavs.

IBT:
henry demands TM and 71gold... how conveniently.. I wanted the war next turn :)
hmm.. T tell him to take his empty threats elsewhere.. and he agrees..

920AD, turn 7:
try another immediate steal from portugal
get caught and portugal declare

have to raise lux to 30% due to loss of trade with portugal
why can noone trade luxes to us? noone has any extra?

contact rome
they want incense for aliance vs portugal.. that was cheaper than expacted
can bow buy dyes from rome for 28gpt and 8 gold

portugal is trading with dutch and persia.. both have an extra lux..

incense and 7gpt gets persia into alliance vs portugal

29gpt, WM and 10gold gets us ivory from persia

would have to pay around 30gpt to get netherlands into war with portugal, and prolly around 30got to get their lux.. so cheaper to just run 10% lux tax.
with some luck persia or rome signs them in vs portugal.

move troops into position to attack tlaxcala next turn (could attack this turn, buth without any atrillery support, so i wait)
I pillage the portugese saltpeter thou.

place a templar on each land tile in the area where we own the 2 old aztec torns to prevent any landings there

IBT:
portugal sign egypt against us (more war happiness for us)
watch roman musket kill a lot of portugese units in defense

portugese move lots of units out of tlaxcala towards our northern town :D

watch rome kill some portugese units and send several ships towards them

930AD, turn 8:
kill the portugese pike on southern island

first bombard, then kill 3 rifles in tlaxcala with cav army.. I raze the city.. dont want to risk flips more than nessesary
gain 3 slaves.

build Toulouse ontop of the saltpeter hill.
rush walls via worker

940AD, turn 9:
portugal brought 3 cavs, a lot of rifles, pikes and muskets next to our towns on other island.. I intend to let them suicide on the town defenses since all the bombards failed.

move some cavs to middle of home island since portugese galleons are circling it.

rush rax in toulouse

IBT:
loose a musket in defense.. kill several units
portugese lands lots of units in our lands

950AD, turn 10:
kill musket, cav and 3 longbows that portugal landed in home lands, still 2 longbows left that I cant kill off.

there is a good chance Atzcapotzalco will fall to the portugese in next IBT.. may be an idea to gift it to the dutch to save our units there.

The save

No rush, I probably can't get to it til Tuesday or Wednesday anyhow.

Sorry for the delay, I just didn't want to play Sid when tired...

France, 950AD

Sorry, I’m not really pleased about this game. I think we’re paying far too less attention to the details for Sid.
Some examples:

1) Military:
When I handed over the game the last time (450AD, turn 160), we had 9 native Workers and 4 Trebuchets, one more queued.
In 950AD (turn 210), we still have the 9 Workers, and 5 Trebs…
How on Earth do we want to get a favourable kill ration without Artillery?
And the Workers: In 50 turns, they improved about 5 tiles (nothing more to do on our landmass); ok, keeping 3 Workers around in case we get pillaged is fine, but 6x 2gptx 50= 600gpt unit support. And what makes things even worse is that we still have five core towns!

2) Logistics:
We have zero Artillery on our home land, the Aztec island and the former Aztec core. The island is absolutely underdefended, but instead we have 2 Armies there :hmm:?
Our Crusaders are used as defenders, not part of the invasion. On our mainland, we’re using MDIs as defenders – either use Musketeers, or Cavs as zone defenses.
And the worst thing: We have no pillaging Armies!

Inherited:
Gift Aztapoczalca to Netherlands, undefendable.

MM:
Many cities makes 9spt, Reims 11spt…switch tiles, getting all to 10spt or 12spt (Musketeers)

IBT:
Loose a healthy Cav to one of those Longbows on our mainland. Loose Crusader to MDI near Teno.
Romans capture Sagres (next to Toulouse); good, since it takes ways lot of the cultural pressure.

Turn 1: 960AD
Clear out some units on our turf.
IBT:
Some losses at Toulouse.
MilAc finishes.

Turn 2: 970AD
Ouch, WW hits.
Raze Braga for the loss of a Cav :)
IBT:
I’m scared to death…3 Frigates escort a Galleon that drops of a single Longbow at Toulouse…
2 Muskets and 2 Longbows land on our home island.
Phew, Portugal leaves the yellow-lined Cav Army alone.

Turn 3: 980AD
Bomb and kill a Cav nest to Toulouse, and Charlemagne appears :D. Cav Army, of course.
IBT:
Ouch, 2 Rifles, 2 Cavs and a MDI land on our island.

Turn 4: 990AD
Shuffle defenders around…
IBT:
Loose only a MDI to a Cav; another MDI retreats Cav. And of course, the AI sends out its Rifles instead covering the wounded Cavs :D
Another Rilfe lands here, and 1 Rifle/3MDI on Aztec Island

Turn 5: 1000AD
Manage to clean out all intruders without losses.
Ouch, WW again nevertheless.
IBT:
Egypt wants peace, but has nothing to offer; decline.
A single MDI lads in our core.

Turn 6: 1010AD
Whack a few Portuguese. No losses, no leaders.
IBT:
Portugal sends Ironclads as escorts .
Persia and Rome sign MA against Egypts.

Turn 7: 1020AD
Portugal lays RR…and sends a Settler towards ex-Braga. Won’t kill the Settler, better destroy another city.
IBT:
Nothing!

Turn 8: 1030AD
Elite Cav vs redlined Rifle near Toulouse…Napoleon :D.
IBT:
Netherlands and Rome sign MA against Portugal

Turn 9: 1040AD
Approaching…

Turn 10: 1050AD
Raze Faro, 4 Slaves and a Cannon. Loose one Cav.
Found Bayonne.

Ok; that’s it.

NOTES:
*We still have to throw in something like 2000gp to get a Tech with peace from Portugal; so keep hurting them.
*We should make peace nevertheless, Henry is hurting (lost all core cities except Lisbon).
In 7 turns expires our MA with Rome, by all means get them to declare by “Diplomacy”. That’s the main reason I didn’t spend any gold during my turns; we need something to get a tech from Henry, and some more to sign in the others against Rome.Currently Rome is the strongest Civ. But this time, use our Armies ;).
*On the good news: 11 cities on the whole map have access to a River tile…and only 3 of them (the former Iroquois core) are not ours ;).

Island.jpg

*Let the Portuguese Settler found a city; destroying that helps us more than the two Slaves.
*If we found cities on the two dots, we can cross the island with ships. One Settler is already on our mainland.

...and the Save.

For playing like a bunch of Noobees, we're not in bad shape. Well played Doc.

Gator is up.
I'm on deck.

Got it.

Should be able to play tonight.

For playing like a bunch of Noobees, we're not in bad shape

Very true!
I don't mean to sound too negative, the bigger issues (our Rep, war strategy, settling, etc) are fine. Just the details...

Btw, how do we plan to win? Conquest/Domination, or Space? UN isn't satisfying IMHO.

One small point I forgot: Forestry! We're IND after all, and we have some Workers on the Aztec Island (can be shipped to Teno as well). Note all unirigated tiles on the island have already been chopped.

I agree Doc. I hate UN games. Conquest, Domination or Space would be cool. I suppose we could keep plowing ahead like the Sid virgins we are and take whatever comes first. Sort of like a real virgin. :D

I second that. Let's take what comes... althoug hspaceship is perhaps the hardest choice..

I know I'm just a lurker here, but if I can make a suggestion? Just keep playing, and someone's going to pull a Diplo win on you... same with Space Ship. Domination is probably your best bet, and I find it to be the most fun too.;) Have fun guys! Can't believe you made it this far.;)

Alerum! Glad to see you're still hanging out. Maybe we can get you in a game after school let's up.

Update: I've played through 4 turns last night, should have the rest done today and post tonight.

I actually only played 3 turns last night. I've got some questions for the team at the end of this post.

Preturn 1050AD

IBT - 3 groups of PORT galleons moving near our mainland - nothing dropped off / PORT settler moves North 2x and founds Badajoz

Turn 1 - 1060AD
Paris musket => cav
Orleans cav => cav
move troops towards Badajoz

IBT - PORT founds Lourenco Marques (right next to our army) / 2 PORT land near Tlacopan

Turn 2 - 1070AD
autoraze Lourenco Marques
autoraze Badajoz
attack the 2 rifles - we kill both - no losses but Gator Army is redlined

IBT - PORT lands 2 rifles and a LB in our core & a rifle with a MDI near Tlacopan / more ships are near

Turn 3 - 1080AD
Tours cannon => cav
Chartes cannon => cav
Rouen temple => cav
Grenoble courthouse => cannon
leave 1 worker 2 tiles from the rifle/MDI team as bait - need to heal our armies and the only cav on that island
lose a knight and cav attacking on the mainland

IBT - bad news :( ROM & PORT sign a peace treaty and PER & PORT sign a peace treaty / PORT lands a rifle on the mt NW of Texcoco

Turn 4 - 1090AD
Orleans cav => cav
Marseilles cav = cav
Avignon cav => cannon
found Strasbourg
kill 1 rifle & LB on mainland
capture Rio Janeiro

IBT - way too many PORT ships (3 ironclads, 12 frigates & 7 galleons [most have unloaded]) moving around on the map between our mainland and Rio landmass / PORT rifle near Texcoco dies

Turn 5 - 1100AD
Paris cav => cav
Lyon temple => cav
Reims musket => cannon
oops Tlacopan riots (turn on MapStat)
kill the 5 PORT units that stopped attacking Tula (ROM) when they made peace
kill the last rifle near Tlacopan
3 of 4 cannon shots miss the last rifle on our homeland - lose a MDI then decide to wait til next turn and try the cannons again
Moved Gator Army to Tenochtitlan (there is a PORT rifle/LB pair in Roman lands)

We really need MAG so we can transport our 3man armies - before we think about going after ROM
PORT wants 1790 gold for peace and Magnetism (or TOG)
ROM wants incense & 2070gold for MAG
DUTCH wants incense & 2420gold for MAG

Stopped here for several reasons
1) We need to decide if we want to continue war with PORT. There are 3 cities south of former Aztec lands that we could direct troops towards if we want to continue this war, but we have to reposition troops to accomplish that.
2) Who is next, Rome or Dutch? This affects which way to move troops and whom we trade with for MAG, especially if we make peace with PORT.

1100AD Save

I can pick back up and play 5 more after we decide or the next 2 could take a few extra turns. This being my first ever attempted Sid game I have no idea where stand. Even after the damage inflicted upon PORT we are still listed as Average to them and PER and we are Weak to both Rome and the Dutch.

It sounds like getting Mag for peace with Portugal is cheaper than a steal. I think I would take the peace and cash for Mag deal. I agree with going after Rome. But don't we have an MA with Rome?

Also plan on finishing your turn Gator.

Get MAG for gpt. Try an immediate steal from Rome; if they declare, fine. But keep enough gpt at hand to buy in the others (obviously we also have spare Incense).
Ship one of the Knight Armies to Roman soil, load one more Cav; this can be used to pillage. Do not found cities on their landmass, they have Cavs and will attack them, but they will not attack Armies in the open (and possible stacked Musketeers on Mountains). If you raze the former Aztec City directly N of ours, use a Slave to form a Dyes colony immediately (the city is on Dyes).
We don not need to blitz through Rome, we'll hurt them a lot when we simply pillage everything first, and ignore their units in the open.
We did have a MA, but Rome broke it; however, IIRC we still have a Lux deal.

capture Rio Janeiro
Not good. Please raze and replace everything; any captured city will almost inevitably flip.

We're doing really well, btw; but the most important reason are the AIs - none of them run away (and IMHO we did a good job in beating on the tech leader; no it's time to beat on the power leader).
