So the other night when I was getting ready for work, I quickly realized I had a full set of clean clothes/uniform with the exception of a pair of socks. I had neither the time nor the money to go to the laundromat, so I washed a pair by hand and figured I could dry them in the microwave like I had many times before.

Tired idiot that I was, I punched in an extra 0 on the power, setting it for 100% instead of my usual 10%. Fifteen minutes later, I smelled an obnoxious smoke coming from the kitchen and discovered that I had not only dried my socks but burned the hell out of them like they were damn marshmallows or something.

The problem now is, that even after some cleaning, the inside of the microwave smells like ass. So my question is, does anyone know of any tricks or particular foods I can cook that will reinstate a pleasant smell into my cooking appliance...

Try nuking something with garlic, you can never get that smell out.

Boil a cup of water + lemon juice.

Might I suggest a trip to one of those mondo stores to obtain a new microwave? Just watch out for cyborg dogs following the agendas of evil 8-year-old boy geniuses...

Yeah a microwave isn't too expensive... Get out there and consume. It is your destiny...

Garlic's a good idea, although the lemon juice is likely to be less offensive to the nose. Microwaves are indeed cheap, but this one's not mine and lemons and garlic are a lot cheaper.

I feel as though I should mention that I haven't tried nuking garlic before. It might have the unfortunate side effect of making you microwave and kitchen smell like garlic farts.

Good luck.

Okay, what you need to do is get a damp, clean rag first. Put it in the microwave for 3 minutes on high. Let the steam it generates circulate for 2 minutes or so. Then take some baking soda and get it all in the nooks and crannies of the microwave. Take the rage and rub all baking soda in. Rinse out the rag and wipe off all the baking soda. Fire up the microwave for another 3 minutes on high. If there is any baking soda residue left, wipe it off with a damp paper towel, and then a dry one. ;) Repeat if it still reeks. The baking soda can get out ANY smell. Believe me on this one. ;)

Next time you have to dry socks really quick, use a hair dryer, they'll be dry in a couple of minutes and best of all, the hair dryer wont smell like ass when youre done;)

So what did you end up doing to eliminate the need for a pair of clean socks? Did you wear the burnt ones, try again, or wear a dirty pair?

Usually when I have no clean socks, i'll find the least offensive pair in the bottom of the hamper, and whip them against the wall a bunch of times to knock out the dead skin and dried sweat. Disgusting, yes, but it does work, and there is no *lol* fire danger.

A sock in the microwave!:lol: Classic!:lol::rotfl:

IIRC, I wound up going sockless to work. As far as the burned ones went, I laminated them and hung them on the wall as a badge of idiotic pride.

I was hoping the microwave would be safe, considering what I did to my underwear in the oven last month. I don't have a blow dryer, but from now on I'm just going to iron them.

Superevie: sounds like a good suggestion. I'll try that if Col's lemon juice doesn't work.

sounds like you live a very interesting life :D
why don't you get a clothes drier? :)

anyway, i'd go with evie's baking soda idea, but maybe something involving vanilla essence? that's usually the kind of odour you want to be left with...

Vanilla essence would be a problem because it would then infuse anything you cook in there for a long time. If you microwaved pasta, it would probably have a vanilla tinge. That's the nice thing about the baking soda because it is odorless and totally safe. If you use harsher chemicals, it can be more dangerous.
