Bush II's Popularity is soaring

Sure, Republicans were mad at Bush. Mad enough to vote for Perot, and mad enough to talk smack about voting for Clinton. Just like the never Trumpers talked smack about how they "would vote for a Democrat, just you watch"...right up until they got in the booth and pulled the lever for Trump. Tea partiers can talk all the smack they want, but unless they are given a choice like Perot they will always vote for any Republican against any Democrat, period.

That's probably true today, but the destruction of labor unions wasn't quite as far along in 92 as it is today and plenty of the current day deplorables used to be reliable D voters because their livelihoods depended on it.

And they weren't the ones voting for Perot. Despite what they said about Clinton being their second choice, the people who were voting for Perot because they were disappointed by Bush were the deepest red Republicans, not the "Reagan Democrats." My parents, for the only time in their lives, were campaign volunteers for Ross Perot. He is the only person that either of them ever voted for that didn't run as a Republican. I met plenty of their fellow volunteers and would feel absolutely safe saying that they fit the same mold. They might call Clinton their second choice, but in the absence of Ross Perot the possibility of not voting Republican would never have crossed their minds.
