It's not an official feature of the competition, and invites spam. I let it go during SGOTM 1 to see how it might develop. As far as I can tell it achieved nothing and had no literary or other merit. So I don't see any need for one this time around.
Hmm, why not create an official lurker thread, not open to team members but to anyone else? If I was a lurker, I think I would appreciate the chance to discuss my impressions with others, point other lurkers to something really cool in one of the threads, etc. I can imagine the the trash talking thread was one way for lurkers to feel semi-involved, and a dedicated thread might be even better for this purpose.
But really, how would I know, I wouldn't be allowed to read it anyway.

The previous trash talking thread was only really used by players. I would love to have a "sports bar" facility such as you suggest, and have considered it before. But I really have enough to do monitoring access to the team threads without having to police access to an open spoiler thread as well, where all team progress would be discussed.
Indeed, thanks and praise are always in order to the staff! I've noticed AlanH online at the weirdest hours, just see when our team threads were created (and convert to GMT

I too find it too bad that we cannot have such a thread, it would have been very interesting to read after the fact, just as a final spoiler thread. Of course that would depend on the lurkers though. I guess policing it would be just like policing said final spoiler thread, no member of any team still playing could even read it, would it really be that much work? I wouldn't presume to know, and if you say so then I guess it is. I guess I believe in a beautiful world where everyone honors the rules...

Have you played any Civ4 GOTM games before? Yes all of them.
Have you played any succession games or SGOTM before? Yes SGOTM 1
Do you have a group of players you want to play with? Team One
If I am too late I will just be a Team One lurker/strategist without taking a turn. No worries either way.
