C3C PBEM : "Cortez" - Age of Discovery scenario-based PBEM

Ok, I play another game with Lou and Random where we're in the same order (Random->me->Lou), and I normally receive my turns in the evening GMT and get a GPS from Lou either evening or morning GMT so it should work if Justus can get his turns to Detlef before 17 GMT :)

I'll post my GPS here for a couple of turns.

1491AD has begun, and the sailors of Columbus' lead ship reports spotting some small islands to the west! No sightings of indiginous life yet, though. Could this be India?

(BTW, I apologize for not realizing I didn't change the civ colors when changing the player order, so France and Portugal have swapped shades of purple!) :)

Off topic a bit:

Lou and I have had some issues with my saves lately. I haven't changed anything in my system, but for some reason the saves I'm sending him recently are often corrupted so I have to replay my turn and save again. I just did a full virus scan and reinstalled all the civ stuff, but it still happened with one of the games (RoR) (and it also happened with AoD first turn). Does anyone have a clue about what could be happening? Gonna ask about this in the other game I'm playing with Lou too (RoR)

Are you zipping the file when you send it? I've had/seen problems with zipped .sav files when they are unzipped, at least in Succession Games I've played. Especially if one is using WinZip (or WinRAR), and the other is depending on Win XP's built-in zip software. I've been sending unzipped saves for PBEM, C3C's internal compression seems pretty good, the zip software rarely compacts it more than 5-10% anyway, and it's one less chance for problems.

If you're not zipping it, I'm not sure what the problem might be. Obviously, everyone should be at Patch Version 1.22. Do you have any different flags set in your .INI file, (Like NoAIPatrol=0) or something? Just guessing on that part. Don't know what else to check.

I haven't zipped anything. Haven't changed any files either, it's a clean install. The odd thing is that it only started happening recently, but we can't find anything that's changed.. normally when it happens and I replay the turn it will work.. like it works if I do things in a slightly different order in the game or don't send anything through diplomacy etc, but that doesn't make sense either.

Hmm, sorry, I've only been playing PBEM for a couple of weeks, so I don't know what other issues there are with the saves. The zipped files was my best guess ;) since that happens a lot with SGs.

I'll try asking in other forums, we're still working on it but it is likely to delay the turns a bit until we figure it out..

What are SGs?

SG=Succession Game. It's a form of civ, developed before there was true 'multi-player' in which a team of players (4-5 usually) take turns playing a single-player game of civ. Normally, the first player plays out the opening 20-30 turns, then sends (or posts) the save for the next player, who plays out the next 10 turns (of the same empire), and then the next one, and so on. The team members work together to plan strategy and discuss moves, but each one gets his 'reign' of 10 turns to play out the game. It sort of represents the 'succession' of kings or rulers over time. Lots of fun, you get to really focus on a game for 10 turns at a time, usually you play about once a week (each player usually has 48 hours to take and post their turns). Some get pretty intense, and often play a lot of variants (One-City Challenge, Always War, etc).

Here's the link to the forum: Succession Games

That's the only 'multi-player' I've really done before starting PBEMs recently.

Looks interesting.. busy forum too! I'm surprised there aren't more pbem games running, as far as I'm concerned that's the most obvious way to play civ (I think single player gets boring, and realtime is difficult to do online as it requires a big chunk of undisturbed time).

If Lou and I can't figure out what's wrong is there a possibility you and Lou can switch places? We're doing the same order in RoR (Random Fan -> me -> Lou) and I'm really at a loss. I want to see if my turns are also corrupted if I or someone else tries to play the succeeding turn..

Uh.

I played my turn yesterday. First time it didn't work for Lou and I had to resend, which I did. Lou sent it on subsequently. We still need to figure a solution to this, it's not viable that I have to replay turns over and over and it could get completely stuck at some point without us knowing what is wrong.

As for the current game, I've gotten a GPS from Detlef this morning, so it should now be at Random Fan (unless he's already forwarded the second turn).

Ironduck, I'd be willing to help test, but I'd hate to restart again, before we even know if it will affec the problem. Maybe you could send me your 1st turn, and I will try to open it here? Since the Dutch wouldn't have moved yet (still 1st round), I wouldn't see anything I wasn't supposed to that way. Make sure you send the save prior to the problem, if you can.

Unfortunately I deleted (overwrote) the first turn :(

I just sent to Lou, let's hope it works. Meanwhile, if/when it messes up in the other game we're playing perhaps you can test that turn and see if it works for you.

1492 has begun. Spanish troops have discovered an Aruac camp, and spotted Portugese troops on the coast! How dare they arrive before Columbus!! ;)
