C3C PBEM : Rise of Rome - scenario-based PBEM

Yep, the battle has been essentially lost by Macedon together with about 60 HCs. No big deal though, we'll build new in a few turns. Strangely, I'm making almost 4-times more gpt, probably build troops 2-times faster and still cannot win by brutal force. Have to be creative against a human player. :)

@Random fan: You are a way better than the previous Persian rulers. :goodjob:

What I am finding in these PBEM games is that it is way, way easier to defend then attack against another human player. You need at least a 3 to 1, or better yet, 4 to 1 advantage in numbers in a local battle area in order to make any progress. It just goes to show you how hapless the AI really is (in comparison) when you can easily take them out city by city, even when they have superior forces to you!

...and yes. Rome retreated because apparently Carthage had over 35+ attack units in just that one city. I have no idea if they suffered any damage, but if I continued on I would have lost the entire 70 unit stack eventually. I lost 30 some units - 10 HC and 20 Garrisons and Legion IIIs. Far better to retreat and build up an unstoppable force. (or else attack elsewhere!) :mischief:

We lost about 6 cavalry in that offensive I think.. That's about the normal ratio when attacking with fast units..

The problem with the AI is that it doesn't think in terms of likely targets and bridgeheads, so the forces are spread out and easily blitzed. But when the AI has fully built out railroad things become so much harder since positioning of troops becomes less important.

Oh, this is fun btw! :D

Yeah this is fun! :D What concerns our Persian-Macedonian wars good logistics was the key to the success I think. My cavalry after attacks is always able to retreat on the safe distance so it wouldn't become a target of the next wave of Macedonian HC. So even if the stack of enemy units is too big to eradicate in one turn you won't suffer big casualities . And Armies proved to be a great defensive tool: 12 movement points on the road is just huge and it is always a guaranted kill, one turn you can defend Arbela and next turn kill a hoplite on the hill near Gordium. Plus two of them can pillage a road in no time :) . Their low defense is a problem though, it is ironic but I can't use them in attacks, because next turn it will be easily eradicated by counter attack.
Too bad I didn't spawn a leader in those 70 battles in Persia. :) At least now I have a crap load of elite heavy cavalry so things should be more intresting :)

Another problem in this game is that you cannot research any superior tech and have to cope with HC and defence 3 units (except for Roman legions III, which are still very vulnerable to HC). Otherwise, if there was a possibility of researching something more powerful, Persia would be long gone. Attacking compact well-defended human player with the same level of techs and essentially the same units is extremely difficult. And in PBEM you cannot count of some stupid mistake because there is really no time pressure for playing the turn. It is like playing chess by mail. But there is always a possibility. :)

Oh, I love the limited tech races in these scenario games, and it's why I probably won't play an epic again - I always disliked how the main focus of those games is to get a tech lead, everything else becomes secondary.

And is it just me or are the two major powers in this game whining a little about how tough they have it against us small nations? ;)

Where is my turn anyway, you're all on here, I want to beat up Rome some more!

You will get it as soon as I beat Macedon :p There is no civ installed on my gf's PC, but I will head home soon :)

Why, time to install it there too, then! I'm sure that will make her very happy ;)

lol  nah she likes to play another kind of "games" ... if you know what I mean ;) And she would beat the hell out of me if I would try to sneak civ3 on her comp :)

Sounds to me like she is into those :whipped: games! Eeek!

Finally had time for screenshots. :p

How the territory lies:

Rome is close to the territory victory condition, but will never achieve population victory without killing at *least* Carthage. Same is true for Macedonia/Persia

Power curve. Look pretty good for the Romans! :D (Although a lot slower than I had hoped, due to the stubborness of the Carthaginians!

Those Carthaginians sure are stubborn, aren't they? ;)
