C3C PBEM : Rise of Rome - scenario-based PBEM

The Battle of Rome has begun! :D

(a little delayed due to persistent bugs with the save, apparently one cannot send stuff to several civs at once during a turn)

That is a lot, 97 units. I'm deeply impressed and impatiently awaiting the development of the situation. Please keep us informed on the progress of upcoming battles which will decide the fate of the world.

Yep. Rome is screwed. Note that the Roman Empire is not screwed, but the city of Rome is. My biggest mistake of this game was going for Hadrian's Wall rather than the Lighthouse --- the Move 5 Carth Galleys is just too big of an advantage.
...my second biggest mistake was being too overconfident and not protecting the heartland towards the end. I mean, I do have 40-50 units around there, but no more than that. I should have done the cheesy 'put every unit on the coastline to prevent landings trick', but again, I was getting pretty lazy towards the end here.
All I can say is that all of Carthage must be nearly emptied of units!

Please be patient. I'm snowed at work and can't get to this turn till late tonight. I haven't decided to defend, attack, or abandon the city yet.

I'm kind of ambiguous about the whole blocking the shores thing.. on one hand it's fully legal in the game, but I never understood why they made it that way. Could just have made it very hard to attack with non-marine specific units, but not impossible altogether. On the other hand, if one has a small island it's so easy to block which is completely unrealistic. We're both doing it in this scenario, and as such it's just fine, but it still seems silly. Maybe there should be a special rule of 'no blocking' to consider before starting games?

Other than that.. yay! :D

The entire population of Roma decided to move to the summer palace in Pisae, as the heat wave recently was too much to bear. Rumors of a "couple" of pesky Carthaginian units nearby had nothing, we repeat, NOTHING to do with this decision!

A most humbling experience overall. Ironduck is the most frustrating human opponent I have ever played against. (I mean that in a complementary fashion, btw!) My own sloppiness is partly to blame, of course, but he took advantage of the few strategic opportunities he had open to him, and took it.

Awww... you're robbing me of the chance to raid Rome? :(

Well, I'll say I've done about as good as I could now considering the circumstances (Rome having its back free from the Macedon the entire game), so taking out Rome and its wonders is a major victory for Carthage. :) I wanted to have done it earlier, but RJ kept attacking me in Spain so I didn't have the units to spare..

I think the Romans must be the most reproductive people in the history of mankind, they're procreating like rabbits - just look at the map!

PS: It's not much cooler in Pisae, you may want to seek to the Alps like the Romans usually do :)

Now sail to Pelopones and you will be the only one with wonders in this game

This is a bit off topic - Lou and I have some weird issues with the saves I'm sending him lately.. I'm also posting this on the new AoD game we started because he's right after me there too and we have the same problem (I'm not playing any other games atm).

Recently the saves I send Lou often show up corrupted when he loads them so I have to replay the turn and save again. I've tried all kinds of stuff, but we can't narrow it down. I just did a full virus scan and reinstall, but to no avail. Ideas?

I don't know about French versions causing troubles.. after I replay and save it usually works. Don't have any mods installed.

I bought the C3C European version and installed the English version. My Civ 3 was bought in Hong Kong and is the US version and my PTW is French (lol).
Some things are weird though, (for instance my Napoleonic scenario is all in French) but I haven't had that kind of troubles in other PBEMs with other players.
Actually the first time we had a pb was after we needed to replay the turn when my worker "worked" a tile too close to the border of the map.

But now we also have problems with the AoD.. so it's not limited to this game.. it's really weird and messed up. I'm thinking about maybe if we can't find a solution we could switch you and Justus' places if possible in the AoD? Maybe he won't have the problem? It's the exact same play order btw: Random Fan -> Me -> LouLong..

We didn't try any diplo in the first turn of AoD and there was a problem there too..

Turn 130AD sent to Persia. I don't care how but let's move the game. We are almost there. But replaying the whole turn might be really painful. What if you exit C3C and the load it "fresh" before the game? Or the opposite?

We're doing our best. I'm the one who has to replay turns because Lou tells me the files are corrupted, it's getting really annoying. Lately I've had to replay them 2-3 times each.

I always load fresh, I don't have any idea what change because it was working fine until a few weeks ago.

We can ask somebody to check the game up however only after it has been finished. But I never had problems with loading this particular game with "fresh" C3C load.

OK, the pbs I have loading the game are not only mine since a neutral tester (I guess Dogboy can be considered neutral and is quite known around here) could not open them either.
Considering the number of times it has happened recently, after checking other possible causes and having to dismiss them, after having a look at the pbs a save editor can cause, I consider it is a distinct possibility someone is cheating.

I cannot (yet) and don't want to name anybody but this problem appeared in another PBEM where someone has already noted something strange about a special civ... It leads me to believe there is cheating. I am not 100% sure but can easily be.

I am trustful and especially in PBEMs because I don't even see the interest of cheating (well, actually once I did something that was quite close to cheating so there was a very short-term interest but I backed off quickly). Obviously if I can be weak I am not gonna be judgemental about others (provided it stops). If you play to win, cheat against a computer. Cheating in front of humans will not grant a real win anyway.

So I am proposing this. The turn is replayed and the cheater (if there is one) stops editing saves and we forget the whole thing. The cheater (if any) not only cheats on other players but damages the save file to the point the game might not playable anymore. So ff I keep on getting files that are obviously corrupt, I will look into it carefully with the save files I have (stocked all of them since the beginning), the admin password and a save game editor. If there is a cheater I will find it without any "reasonable doubt", his name will be publicized and the game stopped. If there is none, I will present my apologies and try to find another solution (but quite a lot of alternatives have already been tried !).

My first proposition seems more than fair to me. Of course that means cheating must be terminated in all games immediately.

Yep, I also have all the saves from the very beginning turn 1. It is tedious work but the game would be impossible to continue if ironduck would have to replay his turns like it is now.

I went briefly through the possible cause of data I/O errors and there are only 3 "reasonable" reasons:

1) Use of localized versions which screw up the scenario data.
2) Corrupt file (should be unloadable in any case on any machine).
3) Editing the save with editor.

I'll seek the help of somebody at CDZ regarding this as well.
