[GS] Canada Discussion Thread

What fan service? This civ isn't designed to appeal to Canadians. A civ that would have appealed to Canadians would also have emphasized one or two things from our history that might have caused other players to say "Hey! Cool. I didn't know that about Canada."

Oh, I didn't say they were Canadian fans...

Canada has consistently cropped up as a popular choice for a new civ, and I don't think many of its proponents have more than a surface-level concept of what Canada actually is, as evinced by this design.

Is it really a surprise war when you declare on a city state? I thought it counted as a formal war?

It's not something I do very often, only as Germany actually. Though I do tend to help myself to former city states that the AI has conquered that I took from them.

Since its a building icon i think its probably a building you can place in the dam district. As a better tier. Because it is so similar in design to the Afsluitdijk.
I think im wrong, since there is a prob Hydroelectric Dam building at the Electricity tech it might even be a building for a district in the sea maybe a new one? (It looks so much like the Afsluitdijk still)

Honestly I kinda like the ability that relates to the diplomatic victory and the emergencies. But all the rest are just sad and disappointing. I agree that they could have done more research than just slap in stereotypes here and there.

I'm happy, Canada looks like a civilization I think I'll enjoy playing. I love being peaceful and just left alone, and no surprise wars against me feels extremely attractive. I love how you can build farms in Tundra and you get bonuses from Tundra and Snow, I like the idea of building in areas where other civilizations aren't going to be competing with me (except maybe Russia!). They seem like a civilization I could play as and just mind my own business, and maybe get involved in Emergencies to help others out (that's sort of like how I always preferred to do warfare when I'd play Civilization 5).

Yes, being all about snow, hockey, and mounties feels very stereotypical and cliche, but I don't know what else I would've expected.

Typical Swedish architecture in a background ;) See I told you hockey, maple syrup, and singing lumberjacks were in the air.

Yes, I feel massively (and deliberately) mislead! :gripe:

No no it definitely is. Have you met most Canadians? They LIVE for these stereotypes. I'd be surprised if most of them could even name five of our Prime Ministers. It's really shameful how little we know about our own history. Gazing at the comments on Twitter and YT shows that Firaxis obviously nailed this one on the head.

Pity party at my place! [party]

The whole thing is hilarious. Having Canada in the game is hilarious. Having all the Canadian cliches is hilarious. Having Mounties as military units - with guns !?! - is hilarious. You can’t surprise war, they can’t surprise war is hilarious (I mean, fine, Canadians are lovely that don’t declare surprise war ... but why can’t anyone surprise war them? Er, does everyone else get extra movement when they surprise war Persia?) Ice Rinks - hilarious. Ice Rinks pumping out a gagillion culture is hilarious.

I think ice rinks are a perfectly fine UI conceptually. Canada is strongly associated with hockey. Who is to say in 500 years we won't view ice rinks and Canada the same way we look at the Mesoamerican ball court?

I like that the Mounties have bonuses tied to National Parks, but that's about the only thing interesting about the unit. I actually think the Mounties will be more interesting gameplay-wise than the alternatives. They shouldn't have guns and they are something that will invite jokes. Then again, I'm not sure what I would have used instead. So, lazy stereotype but with possibly interesting results.

The tundra bonus is honestly the laziest bonus. There aren't Canadian farms in true tundra. But a real mechanic would have temperature zones with Canada getting bonuses to western plains that are still fairly cold. But the game doesn't have that mechanic. At least they didn't let them put farms on snow.

@Trav'ling Canuck I agree with your views that Canada is a good Civ for players who find Deity too difficult. Not getting a surprise war is huge on Deity plus you can settle Tundra cities so you can settle away from other Civs.

Somewhere in the thread mention a new wonder, it might be the Oosterscheldekering (deltaworks)
oosterscheldekering+zijkant.jpg

It has the same two metal pins on it and it is a wall

Solar Farms are back, nice.

I think all the references I'm seeing to maple syrup do maple syrup a disservice. Yes, a maple syrup granting UA or UI would have been stereotypical, but it would have been stereotypical in an distinct and interesting way (making Canada the only civ with a unique luxury resource). The ice hockey rink, in contrast, is stereotypical in basically the same way as Scotland's golf course.

Just right there, you had a better idea than Firaxis. Canada could have had the Canadian Shield, its own type of terrain!

Practically everything suggested for Canada is better than this. I have no interest in Canada being in a Civ game, but yet again they've gone for a tedious civ design for a post-colonial civ even when this very expansion is a sensible place to include it. Canada is significant for its extractive industries and would work well with both the 'modify the environment' theme and the new take on strategic resources - though granted they do get an ability that works with strategic resources. Some effect related to harvesting, for instance.

The Canadian symbol appears to be a maple leaf.

No surprise there. :p Curious what it will look like with alternate colors.

It probably is POSSIBLE but the difficulty level would be astoundingly high considering you get so much tourism from GWAMs.
Not if you don't play on a super high high level. People have done it with seaside resorts already. Between Canada's national parks and the new ski resort, it sounds like a fun challenge.

it's good, i just don't know that i like it. I think I would have preferred forest abilities.
I bet Sweden will get something with forests

it’s hard not to just totally love it for the sheer insanity
Exactly - I laughed the whole first time I watched the First Look. In part because of how upset I knew some people would be. But I think I'll have a lot of fun with them - playing as or against. I'll be happy to see Laurier show up.

ice hockey rink is too close to golf courses
But on steroids. I don't mind that too much. The symbol is a little too similar imo.

So does the building look like a new city wall?
The Great Firewall! :D

For some strange reason, Firaxis rates tundra much higher in appeal than desert.
Isn't that partially because of all the forest in tundra?

For the UU I would of went with a WWI style infantry unit. Apparently, the Canadian divisions had a pretty fearsome reputation amongst the Germans
Too similar to Australia's, probably. Although similarity to another civ's unique hasn't stopped them before....

Oh GOD the Great Firewall. One of the stupidest wonders ever put into Civ.
