[GS] Canada Discussion Thread

.. there was a viewership survey done a couple years ago for sports that divided out the results amongst the Generations. It showed hockey in clear decline amongst Millennials and niche sports like Rugby and Cricket starting to climb. And, just being able to build farms on Tundra is not good enough .. they need some kind of buff, maybe +1 production on tundra tiles so tundra is similar to plains.. and better matches what the ability is called.

Yes, I do definitely feel that tundra is still a little under-powered even with farms on there. Maybe something like +1 science per tundra resource? Not sure exactly how it fits inside the abilities, but would be a nice small extra that would be kind of unique.

Well if you think about it, neither Canada or America are strong in Civ6. Both are about the same strength as each other and both have bad UUs. At least if you play them on a TSL earth map, you will not be sweating over neighbors, like you would if you start nextdoor to Sumeria, Macedon, or Nubia. Will be interesting to see if either bother to fight each other (along with Poundmaker) by the time I can get a scout to the American side or if they let Monty run them up the map. Usually Monty swallows up Brazil on my TSL games.

Sorry you Canucks got a lackluster entry into Civ, but I only played Civ starting with 5 and American civs were never OP or top tier in Civ 5 or 6.

It'd be fun (if unlikely as hell) to get a French & Indian War scenario.

Well... finally back from the office, and I watch this ....

As a lot of people, I'm (to say the least) underwhelmed ;-(

Honestly, I don't mind too much about the stereotyping... as many have mentioned, this is pretty much what CIV is about, and you've got to take it in stride and be able to laugh it off...

But the bonuses and abilities seems very meh to me ;-( I have not ever played the Scots because I felt the civ was boring... Well this is in the same pattern of civ building, and seems even worse ;-(

But, we all have to remember this: We have no REAL idea how the accumulation/spending of resources and how the Diplomacy game works, so it's VERY difficult to analyse how the
diplo and resource bonuses will translate in game... we'll have to wait and see. Maybe THOSE are what will make Canada Playable.

But my general feeling is, really not enough early game help, every bonus seems to come in the late game (except for tundra farms), I've a feeling they will play out a lot
like the US played out in vanilla, before the boost to cards... By the time you get your goodies, it'll be too late. I don't mind that it's not an domination powerhouse kind of civ,
we have more than enough of those, but... at least make it enjoyable !

And honestly, the Mountie ? An under average unit that has bonuses you'll NEVER get because you almost never fight a battle adjacent to a natural park ? really ? I hope this unit
will be 50% production price to make, otherwise it'll be more than useless

What is the historical precedent for Mounties being able to create national parks? I've been reading and I do see a bit about them serving as volunteer forces in wars though. Would it not have made more sense to give them some kind of use when participating in joint wars or military emergencies? Also, since they are a police force what about making them a counterspy unit instead of a military unit? When an emergency starts they can then be deployed outside borders as an era appropriate infantry unit but only for the duration of the emergency (after which they return as counterspies). It could turn Canada into this late game peace fortress that you cannot surprise declare on, is hard to target with spies, lots of diplomatic favor to counter being targeted by WC etc. The ability to deploy the Mounties directly near emergencies as peacekeeper/restores units would also synergize with their bonuses for them. I'm sure I'm reaching but I'm fairly desperate for something better than the design that we got.

Everyone's hating on the Mountie unit. Yea, it'll be pretty weak as a combat unit, but BUILDING A NATIONAL PARK without faith dude that's insane. Love that part. I don't mind a military unit whose most important aspect isn't about combat, especially on a civ design like this. That being said, though, I agree that the Canada civ looks quite boring overall, and that was certainly a crazy missed opportunity to not have a peacekeeper-type unit with a connection to emergencies.

I actually don't mind the implementation from a gameplay perspective, if it's a bit on-the-nose thematically. But I have to say that all the talk of grand railway hotels pre-reveal had gotten my hopes up a little too high. I was looking forward to an expansive railroad civ, and since the US and Russia are decidedly focusing on other things, Canada was the best shot at that. Railway Hotels boosting tourism and yields of trade routes and especially railroads they border would have been awesome. They could've also had routes/railroads boosting the yield per turn of resources in connected cities (to simulate increased export/transport efficiency), maintaining the whole resource + tourism bonus thing they have going on without making it quite so flat.

I like the ability of the Mounties though. No idea if it's thematically accurate, but it's a cool feature at least.

If it is a culture based civ then +1 culture would go a long way. I find it really dumb that the ice rink and mountie are locked behind late game civics but there are no culture boosts to get to them. Russia gets +1 faith/prod so why not +1 food/culture for Canada?

It seems like Canada is going to have to build some Theater Squares to get through the first half of the Civics tree in a timely fashion. Prime the pump, as it were. But once they get their Hockey, all hell breaks loose.

Canada fits a niche in civilization that has been lacking. It makes use of the inhospitable dead space on the map. It is anti warmonger. It is diplomacy and culture driven. It is a light hearted representation that plays into those victories. A friendly civ, good natured and inviting. Good for the story/role play aspects of civ 6.

There are a lot of things we don’t know yet. How is diplomacy victory achieved, what the new era brings, how culture victory has been modified, etc....

This game is a characiture in most, if not all aspects of its gameplay and appearance. I invite unique and varied civs that buck the heavy lean toward war and am pleased that they leaned heavy in opposition. This is balance we need. Balance that represents the relitive stability of the world over the last 50 years. I know we feel the world is falling apart, but it is clearly one of the more peaceful periods in world history. I feel this civ reflects that.

As for stereotypes, well, most civs are stereotypes. Zulu=Warmonger, Rome=well rounded, Netherlands=Commerce/trade, Mongolia=Horse Lords. The list goes on. Some stereotypes are embraced while others are shunned. The community often acts schizophrenic about what it values or desires. We often overreact or allow the few speak for the many. We often sound as though we want to revert back to civs being different colors and possibly art.

This iteration of civ has progressively pressed in harder on stereotypes in an attempt to create civ distinction and diversity. As an American I feel we are typically portrayed as a bland souless nation. I have always felt we have been scaled back in areas as to not offend the international community, also our own people. Walking this tight rope with modern civs is difficult and often leads to blandness and stereotypical pc representation. I don’t care that much.

Older civs give leeway to more difficult and diverse subject matter. Less offense can be taken.

I reserve judgment based on the unknown in terms of yields and effectiveness. I do judge Canada to be interesting and intriguing, filling a needed spot.

I welcome this civ with open arms. Every civ need not focus on its military units. Some civs can be light hearted and friendly. Only one victory condition is domination. The most over used. Getting away from that, I feel, brings a much needed variation and challenge to a game that struggles to pull its user base out of one optimal niche and into using all aspects of the game.

I wouldn't say Canada would have been my first choice but I can appreciate their input to Civ VI's gameplay paradigms. [snip]
Canada will likely appeal to players who like to expand quickly then turtle. They favor a sort of "friendly to everyone" mentality, a sort of gameplay paradigm that is surprisingly rare in civ.
Well, my personal style of gameplay definitely is "friendly to everyone." Is it really so rare? Am I an outlier?

Honestly, it makes me feel great when I'm playing and I look up to see that every single one of my companion players has a nice happy smiley face next to their icon.

It seems to me that the decision to include Canada and in particular Monsieur Laurier as leader is an attempt to increase sales in Canada. Obviously there’s a huge demand there for civilisation games.

Design critiques aside, really bummed that people were so warm and excited about Australia and are now so hostile towards Canada. :(

I think that’s because the weather in Australia is better than in Canada?

Do you come from the land down under, or the land up over....

Do we know already when Hockey unlocks? We know it improves at Professional Sports, but it should be available earlier then. I doubt it is Games & Recreation as proposed, but I think Medieval Faires might be a contender. No renaissance civic seems to fit, so the next guess might be civil engineering or urbanization (maybe too late). On the tech tree maybe Replaceable Parts (but it is also late).

Well, at least Canada really feels like, you know... Canada. Name these bonuses to someone who doesn't play Civ and have them guess which country or culture they belong to and they will all say Canada.

America on the other hand, man... Hard to find a civ that possesses even less flavour than they do (Scotland and Georgia, but if you play those you're at least BLASTED with bag pipes and throat singing respectively, as opposed to whatever the American track is again.) Calling America "vanilla" would be a disservice to the vanilla bean, which, might I add, is delicious, while Civ6's America is just a tasteless slog cobbled together from vague, seemingly random bonuses that have no synergy between each other and just appear to be selected on a whim. A terribly designed Civ imo. (Lol I assume my dislike for America's design is on par with Zaarin's Gilgaphobia)
