Capto Iugulum: Empires and Nations

@luckymoose: Just saw your question. Florida's eagerness to join the United States is mostly because they just rebelled from Spain because they wanted to join the United States. For all other questions I refer you to Arengee, who makes the decisions in these matters on which routes NPC nations choose to take.

For everyone else: 36 hour warning. I now have 2/31 orders. Looking like some fun and strong nations may become available this update as people fail to send in any sort of acknowledgement that they're in this NES. Were the other 29 of you really that committed to the old rules? I did apologize! Remember, everything is solely the fault of myself. Ha! Just kidding! Any problems you might have are actually caused by John Nance Garner.

From: The Kingdom of the Two Sicilies

After further contemplation the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies has determined that it will not allow Austrian annexation of the former Venetian Republic. As such the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies demands that Austria reinstate a free and independent Venice. Failure to do so will result in our Kingdom seeking military action to bring about freedom to our Italian friends and brothers of this region.

We would note that we do not seek any gain from this war and merely desire the Liberation of a once free nation.

OOC: Sorry for the lateness of this post however I didn't get a chance to post this at lunch today as I had originally intended.

Edit: Orders sent.

The Pope has deemed the Hapsburgs to have the right to govern Venice. The Venetian government was failing, both in material and spiritual terms, and the Austrians are superior to the Venetian government on those counts. So long as the Austrians rule justly in the eyes of the Lord, they have the right to govern the lands of Venice. Should military action be taken against the Austrians, the Papal States will retaliate against the Kingdom of Two Sicilies.

This would be 24 hour warning. @Justo: compared to the majority, you're early.

He meant the lateness of his diplomacy... the SECOND last-minute bombshell dropped on me (you're forgiven, though :p).

The continued unavailability of certain players makes writing certain sets of orders difficult. :cringe:

To Two Sicilies
From Austria:

We will defend out rightful claim to the former lands of Venice. Have at thee.

To Catholic League
From Austria:
We ask you aid us in turning back the armies and navies of Sicily.

Orders resent, sorry EQ. I forgot the maps for the first set.

All right, I shall reiterate, again, what the RNG is actually doing here. I, me, EQandCivfanatic, EQ, Lord of Death, Andy, Citanafvic, Lorekeeper of the Keepers of Stromgarde, elected Mayor of Qeynos (2004), Messiah of the Wasteland choose several possible things to happen in any given scenario. The RNG simply picks which choice to go with out of the plausible scenarios I present it. It's as human as can be. I've said it before, I won't say it again.

Just because the Pope deems Austria's right to rule over Venice does not mean that it should be so. For hundreds of years Venice has stood independent, stable and strong and with little warning of provocation Austria invaded and now forcibly controls the region.

We feel that if allowed to control this region Austria will only seek further expansion in the future at the expense of the freedom of both good Catholics and Italians. We believe that the Pope should be concerned about such moves however it seems entry into the Catholic League is enough for the Pope to turn a blind eye to such things.

If the Papal States seeks aggressive manouvers against our nation we will defend ourselves as we feel appropriate.

You dare question the Holy authority of the Bishop of Rome? His Holiness's authority is not derived from man but from God. The Catholic League will not permit further incursions into Italy. As the head of the Catholic League, the Pope has forbade it. The Austrians gave just cause for their governance of Venice, which is acceptable to the Pope. You insult the Holy See, and for that, we shall meet you in the battlefield.

To Austria
From Switzerland

We stand beside the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies in calling for the immediate evacuation of the independent city of Venice. As Austria has failed to do so, Switzerland if forced to declare war upon Austria. We call upon other Italian states to help preserve the freedom of all nations on the Italian peninsula and fight Austrian hegemony.

Was it not the will of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for the leaders of his Church to remain above the fray of petty political bickering? Was it not His Will that those who preached His Word to serve as guiding lights of morality and truth? Why then does the Pope interfere in the affairs of men in such a way to increase his own worldly power? Would it not be better for him to spread the message of peace that Christ intended than to be spread than work to create a Papal dominated Italy? Should not a true follower of Christ work to bring unity and harmony among mankind and not seek to extend the increasingly corrupt power of the Vatican?

The Papal States are not only a dominion under God, but a dominion amongst men. Thus, at times it is necessary to use force, when the devil foments forces counter to the forces of the Lord, to protect His people. And as ancient Israel was both a holy and political dominion, and King David both a political and divinely appointed ruler, so too must the Pope, as both a Holy and at the same time a political leader, at times stoop to the level of mortal men in order to advance the will of the Lord, and protect His people. Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ never criticized Israel for their history, for it was by His will that it came to be. The Pope is also the head of the Catholic League, a political organization intended to advance the Lord's Will on Earth. The organization was formed with peace in mind. It was not the League who began this war. It was those outside of the League who began it. And as the Pope is the head of the League, would it not be hypocritical for him to expect others to carry the burden without also calling upon those in His dominion to do the same? The Pope must lead by example, and it was not He who began war, but those outside of the League who did. The fighting in Europe saddens the Pope, but sitting on our hands and allowing the forces of Satan to win will not advance the will of the Lord.

We tried to bring peace. We gave the Sicilians a chance to change their minds. But they did not listen. The Pope is also saddened by the declaration of war by the Swiss, but there is little else he can do. We hope you reconsider your declaration of war. But if you do not, then as a member of the Catholic League, the Papal States will be forced to declare war on Switzerland.

Again, we hope you reconsider, as this is not your fight.

Due to the defensive pact that we have with Spain, being a member of the Catholic League, it is our godly duties to help them in their time of need. Thus being said Portugal is declaring war on Britain and their allies that have struck against the Catholic League.

To the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and Switzerland
From Milan

We likewise support your movement to liberate our Italian brothers currently under the Austrian yoke. Unfortunately, due to continuing internal turmoil in our kingdom we will be unable to lend any military support. We feel the Pope may have forgotten his sacred charge, to protect the Catholic religion, and if he allows Catholic nations to be gobbled up by other Catholic nations without due cause then Milan seriously questions the Pope's abilities to run the Catholic world.

To the Papal States
From Milan

We join our Italian brothers in their efforts to liberate the Venetian people from their unlawful annexation. We say unlawful because Austria has never in her history occupied Venice and therefore never had a historical claim to the land and as such we believe it was a forged claim by Austria in the hopes they will gain Papal Authority to annex the once great state.

Our own historians have researched Italian history back to the Dark Ages and found a detailed chronicle of Venetian history from the Dark Ages through their wars against the Turks and their eventual decline to the moment we are now, in no area does Austria fit into this picture other than as a possible Catholic ally supporting Venice against the Turks like Spain. Therefore we implore the Pope to look into this matter more closely and possibly avoid war.

We also wish to impress on the Pope that this is not a Milanese declaration of war, Milan is trying to avoid war by providing evidence of possible illegal actions and offering an alternate path to a peaceful resolution of this matter. We hope you will listen.

This is the 9 hour warning for the update. It should be noted that because I'll be incredibly busy tomorrow and this weekend, there is no room for leniency when it comes to waiting for orders. Fortunately, as most of you put them in last minute last time, I'm sure it'll work out this time. We now have 17/31 orders, with the following players to be dropped from the NES should they fail to get in orders:
