Cats and Kittens

Kittens were running around today. A couple of times they caught a claw on my couch or floor-length curtain, not intentional claw sharpening, but I'm worried that they may begin doing that .

They're three weeks old. When may I begin clipping their nails?

I'd say not for 6 months.

When I was in Grade 4, our family had a cat named Jinx. We named him after the sidekick character in the Freddy the Pig stories.

I'd say not for 6 months.

According to the vet websites I checked, the earliest is 4 weeks. However, I wouldn't recommend earlier than 5 or 6 weeks, when mother cats normally start weaning.

The most important thing to remember is to never cut into the pink part of the claw, because that's the quick. If you cut that, it will hurt and bleed and the cat will be Extremely Upset (and you'll feel horrible for having hurt the kitty).

Here is information from the ASPCA. I like the suggestion that you should "get to know your kitten's paws" by gently feeling and massaging them before you clip them the first time. For one thing, cats' paws are really cool to touch. They're soft and simultaneously furry and non-furry. If you do this very gently and don't pinch, you can experiment with persuading them to let you get the claws extended so you can cut them (cats hardly ever oblige you by doing this voluntarily).

I don't like the suggestion of treats after every paw. That's excessive and teaches the wrong thing. With Maddy, I use lots of hugs and cuddles and tell her she's a good girl (even if she sometimes makes me mean it when I tell her I can always trade her for a goldfish - a lie, since we're not allowed to have fish here).

Cats should never be transported in vehicles unless they're in a carrier.

It's a very nice photo, but that's an unsafe situation for the cat. If you had to stop suddenly or someone crashed into you, the cat could go flying through the windshield.
