CBob01 AWM Training Day Game

Yeah, I had a really bad case of Stage 1. In fact, I had a Stage 1.1, which was "OMG, I just lost the game for us!" when one of those waves took our slaves and kicked off the Hittite GA. For that turnset, I believe I deserve the Golden Goober Award for this game.

Only if I'm the runner-up--I felt about the same way after my first set.

Quick update:

I have been able to play 3 turns, but it took over 7 hours. This included a very brief preflight session. Partly it is my fault, since I am not a fast player, but partly the game's, too. The controls were very sluggish and clicking was a real chore; it wasn't always recognized that I had clicked on something. I don't think I had anything 'special' running in the background.

Cannons and trebuchets have been upgraded to artillery. I renamed almost all the workers and slaves in the homeland (another great time killer, I know, but it lets me think less) and begin to rail the hills in the core.

I'll post screenshots and turnlogs of these three turns once I get home. It might be possible to finish this turnset. I shall definitely try, but no promises!

End of Turnset 30 Stats:

And Tzintzuntzen is now Russian.
We keep this city as a base of operations on Aztec Island II.
But we rename it to TenZgrad, a good, decent, Russian name.
The place has three resistors, so we hire a taxman and build a worker, since the harbor was not destroyed.

Before the battle we picked up 4 units from Aztec Isalnd I; they will arrive next turn.
Move Army and Cossacks into TenZgrad to quell the resistance in one turn.

Aztec Island II has two remaining Aztec cities.

Move units and settlers near the Aztec capital onto a hill 2NE of Tenochitlins. Units aren't strong enough to attack but should be able to defend on a hill. Once built, the city will receive two galleons of reinforcements.

On the mainland, we have 46 slaves and 36 workers.
Create three stacks of slave hill railroaders. Had to augment some stacks due to bad directions.
Created six stacks of Russian railroaders.
In all, railed 10 hills this turn, with two completing this IBT.

(This was a long turn, including the preflight, about three hours realtime! The others should move much faster.)

How We Ranked

And the save is >>HERE<<.

1635AD. Well done all!

Speaking for myself, I've had lots of fun and picked up lots of good little tidbits of knowledge along the way. It's been an honor to spend my first SG with you fine folk.

:woohoo: Very nice! About 200 years ahead of when we originally planned to win it, too!
I'm glad I was able to join this SG, even if I came in a little later than everyone else (though I seem to do that a lot). Maybe I'll have to start my own soon to be sure that I'm not the last to join. ;)

This was a lot of fun and you guys helped make it fun. I've read several AW SGs, but playing AW is just so much better. As Frodo said it:

Frodo Baggins said:
“I wonder,” said Frodo. “But I don’t know. And that’s the way of a real tale game. Take any one that you’re fond of. You may know, or guess, what kind of a tale it is, happy-ending or sad-ending, but the people in it don’t know. And you don’t want them to.”
And the not-knowing made it a lot more exciting/tense/nerve-wracking.

And it made the final victory that much sweeter!

Notes
At the start of the this turnset I wasn't sure if I could finish off the Arabs and Aztecs, but with rails, artillery that can shoot two tiles away and combat settlers to act as forward bases, it was soon obvious that the deed could be done. I kept some cities just to allow faster movement. I kept them ungarrisoned in case they flipped. I expected to have more than just one flip, but we got lucky. Wadi Suprise was a bad choice since it did not connect to a road network, but I didn't see that until after the fact.

I looked at the replay for giggles. Some highlights:

- The Hittites were the first to get a second city in 3900BC. We were second, thanks to CBob popping a city from a hut.

- Germany got a SGL in 2800BC - but there is no wonder built right after. Probably used it to rush a temple or something.

- Hittites kicked off their Golden Age in 825BC
- Babylon kicked theirs off in 510 BC, which I remember since I did that one.

- Yanks were first to settle an island, in 130BC

- Our first MGL was in 130BC, and that was the tipping point.
- We took our first city in 90BC

- Aztecs built the first wonder - the Pyramids in 90AD

- The US - German war in the 300-400s really helped us - it took the pressure off a lot of those cities in the North. The Germans really cleaned the Yanks' clocks.

- Germany got an MGL in 380AD - probably rushed a temple.

- Aztecs started their Golden Age in 440AD, which was wonder triggered by the Great Wall.

- Romans and Arabs threw down in the 500-600s, Baghdad changed hands a couple times.

- Romans and Aztecs had it out in the 1100s and kept at it until we showed up. Aztecs got a MGL in 1180, Rome got their Golden Age in 1210. All that fighting with the Aztecs really gassed the Romans, which is how we got through them in only 80 years (1460 - 1540).

- Arabs got a MGL in 1520 and kicked off their Golden Age in 1525, not that it helped them any.

- By my count we got 10 MGLs by the time the game was over.

Wow guys. That was definitely a teaching game. What I have learned is that I don't know very much but it was great reading. This thread was recommended to me as a way to start planning my little Chieftain AW.

I know how far I have to go now.

...again Congrats!  :hatsoff:
