CBob02 Jaguar Conquest

Just a quick update - I got to turn 4 and razed both Palenque and Tikal, but man it was hard going. Both citites were, of course, on hills. I was like 0-6 plus 4 retreats at one point. Good thing we brought a lot of units to both parties, cuz we needed them.

Reorganizing and moving on the next targets.

I didn't know that Palenque was on a hill. Ouch!

Fortunately, the rest of the Mayan cities are close together, so one stack should be able to do the trick.

Good luck!

OOB:
3 Settlers
47 Workers (16 native, 31 slaves)
1 Spear (1v)
3 Galleys
103 Jags (80v/23e)

Unit limit is 148, so we are not paying any upkeep.
Research is turned off, and we are at +70gpt with 2512g in the bank.

Not going to list every city, but in short, we are building,
1 Settler
1 Worker
16 Jags
4 Rax
12 Cats
2 Galleys
and 1 Great Lighthouse

PreFlight:
- Change clown in Oasisville to a taxman. Just out of habit, it's not like we need the gold, but we need the clown even less.
- mm Desert City to work the 2 hills instead of the irrigated plains - the town is size 6 and wasting 2fpt, and by working the hills we get 2 turn Jags instead of 3.

Disperse an Inuit encampment for 25g.
The way the troops are currently dispersed, I'm going to go 2 stacks of 20+, one each for Calakmul and Lagartero. Neither of them are on hills, so it should be enough to take them.

Keep the town as no settlers are in the vicinity and I don't want the Yanks to get their grubby hands on those horses. That's the problem with those Yanks, always trying to take all the resourses on the map... wait...

Anyhoo, Rename to Lager town. Speaking of which, all that battle has left me a tad thirsty...

Found Lucy in the Sky next to the diamonds.

vJag vs eSpear 1/5, we win (17-34, 22 retreat)
and

Washington ours.

Not going to attack Yax, their last city, even though I have 15 jags outside - it is their capital and over size 6, I need some more troops, remembering Tikal, their last capital, took 27 attacks.

Ending Order of Battle:
62 Workers (20 native, 9 slaves)
1 Spear (1v)
2 Cats
6 Galleys
116 Jags (93v/23e)

End Notes.
- Last Mayan city has 26 Jags available to attack next turn. Your choice if that is enough. There are 10 more 1 turn away, down by Washington.

- Americans are next as soon as Mayans are done. We should have no trouble with them.

- I should have made more settlers, but was concerned about replacing the high losses (won 17 battles, lost 34, and retreated 22). Got some galleys out, we have 6 now. Need a few more.

And the file
>>FILE<<.

The last battle front

1 Mayan city, 3 Yank cities, and 1 English city left on the mainland.

CivActuary - great turnset. That was the essence of kicking butt and taking names!

:woohoo: I'd say things are looking pretty good now! The only downside is that I won't get to do much actual fighting during my set. The only things we really have to worry about are Dover and the Ottomans, and those are just a matter of building enough galleys.

BTW, sorry I haven't been posting much lately--I think I was a little embarassed about thinking the Americans had built the GL instead of just having started it. Also, looking at the last 3 sets, I wonder if I was playing a little too conservatively. Of course, it could be that like Henry VII, my stinginess led to the glory of my successors. ;)

In any case, we've pretty much got this locked up--we can win it as soon as we have enough galleys and cats.

Good turns, CA!

Now the question remains, which shall be the last city to conquer?

The Mayans and Yanks should die this turnset, unless we have a lot of bad luck. Cities of 10, 5, 4 and 3 vs. 36+ Jags in 10 turns? Not even close.

The Great Lighthouse should finish near the end of Tim's turns, IIRC.

And then we need to decide who dies next. I favor the Ottomans because I expect them to be tougher. And because I don't trust the AI, before we declare on them, we need to gift them a corrupt inland city (and surrond it with Jags). This way, once the Ottoman island has been 'cleansed', they won't have a settler in a boat looking for a place to live. They will still have a city.

While the Ottomans are being well and truly chewed up, say after about two cities, we need to send our sailors and Jags to Dover and liberate it.

At this point, we have two cities to destroy, both on our mainland. Easy pickings.

In fact, it might be good to capture Canterbury before Dover (after our peace treaty expires, and it may have already) and gift the English with a city like we did the Ottomans.

650(0): switch a few builds to galleys
some minor MM

IBT: jav retreats a jag
England wants to renegogiate peace, we don't
build 3 jags, 1 galley, 1 cat

660(1): lose 7 jags, 5 retreat, kill 2 javs, 1 spear to capture Yax, 1 native worker, destroy Maya

IBT: build 4 jags, 1 cat

670(2): declare war on America
lose 2 jags, 2 retreat killing 1 spears to capture Boston
kill 1 spear to capture Chicago
1 jag retreats killing 1 spear to capture Atlanta
lose 1 jag killing 2 spears covering 2 settlers, destroy America

IBT: English archer kills jag
build 3 jags, 3 cats, 2 galleys, 1 settler

680(3): get a leader killing the archer

IBT: build 4 jags, 1 galley, 2 cats

690(4): zzz

IBT: archer dies
build 4 jags, 1 galley, 1 cat

700(5): build army and put one jag in it

IBT: build 2 jags, 1 cat

710(6): lose 1 jag, 3 retreat killing 2 spears, archer to raze Canterbury

IBT: build 3 jags, 2 galleys, 2 cats

720(7): rush two galleys near Dover

IBT: build 5 jags, 4 galleys, 1 cat

730(8): fill up 13 galleys with 1 cat, 1 settler, 1 army, 22 jags

IBT: build 2 jags, 1 galley, 2 cats, 1 Great Lighthouse

740(9): galleys heading over

IBT: I forgot to declare war on the Ottomans, so they force the galleys to leave
apparently I accidentally connected iron somewhere
build 5 jags, 1 galley

750(10): pillage the iron
declare war on Ottomans
move galleys to Ottoman island, but the only landing spot is blocked
move 1 galley by Dover

Notes: It's pretty straightforward: kill the Ottomans and England. At least all the cities are <size 7 and on flatland.
Some galley builds might want to switch to jags, not that it should matter

Way to go Tim! I think it's safe to say this one is ours!

Roster:

CommandoBob - warming up
Phaedo
CivActuary
TimBentley - just played
Norton II - UP!
Lboogie13 - on deck

Looks like Norton II gets to complete our conquest with the Jags.
Five cities, two invasions, and a lot of Jags to use.

We'll be waiting.

:coffee:

Got it. Starting now. I'll hit the Ottomans on turn 1 while building up forces near Dover.

3 turns in, and there's a problem. Of the 25 units that landed on Ottoman Island, none survived! I guess we need a larger landing force, hopefully one that can't be slaughtered by Osman's archers. Fortunately, we have one ready, but I want some more galleys and especially cats.

Ugh. I hope Osman lost at least a couple archers in that attack to start whittling down his force. With no hills or mountains to land on we are pretty much sitting ducks for them.

Wow. 25 units! I suppose you have the option of landing a spear or two as defence but it would be really nice to do this with only Jags.

Did they all die the turn they landed? If not, using the survivors to pillage roads might give you a beachhead where you could out-manoeuvre his archers. If any survived, you could also bring a settler and some workers to create a beachhead (boost the pop) and rush some walls. Once you get the foothold, he should fold like the others.

I'm reading into this that the slaughter occured on the IBT after we landed and we did not get a chance to counterattack.

We lost 25, that means at least 25 Archers in 4 cities. Plus spears.

We will of course land the second time with more Jags.

Stinkin' Ottomans. :trouble:

And a whole lot more galleys. If we want to use a ship-chain everybody on one turn, we would need as many galleys as Jags, since a galley holds two and it will take two galleys to ship two Jags from the mainland to the Otto Island.

I was thinking that they are still using roads too. Maybe an initial landing on the far side to draw their forces away and then a heavy one on the close shore might give us some breathing room.

He lost 8 archers over 2 turns, and 2 spears when I attacked Izmit (probably a mistake).

Per post #4, we can't use spears to protect our jags, only our cities and settlers. That gives me an idea, though: we could land a settler and some spears along with our jags 2 south of Istanbul, then found a city there and reinforce it with jags and more spears. We'd be bending the rules a bit, so I'd want everyone to agree before I do that.

As for the rest, they survived one IBT, but the rest were wiped out on the second IBT after landing. Pillaging roads wouldn't have done much good--they surrounded us the turn we landed. Also, I didn't think to land 2 tiles from an existing city so we could found one of our own. I'll bring another settler and a worker for the next landing.

Not quite, but we didn't have much to counterattack with. Also, I think some of his archers attacked twice, and he used spears vs. our redlined jags.

I think if spears are only allowed to be used for cities, landing them with Jags and a settler will end up using the spears to defend the jags. However, if they were kept offshore until the city was built on turn 2, I think we stay within the rules. I'd take 3 workers with the settler too so a rax could be quickly rushed after the walls. If the city can survive 3 turns, I think they would be done. Knowing that they had to use spears to take out some of the 25 is quite reassuring. :)
